Armani? Posted January 21, 2023 Posted January 21, 2023 This was a small study of 20 ppl and needs to be followed up with a larger cohort. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35197681/ Quote Materials and methods: The present study was undertaken to evaluate the sperm quality parameters of vegan diet consumers (10 males who had a strictly vegetable diet with no animal products) and compare them with non-vegans (10 males with no diet restrictions). Semen quality was assessed following the World Health Organization (2010) criteria. Acrosome and DNA integrity has been evaluated using the immunofluorescence technique. Statistical analysis: All variables were analysed by IBM SPSS version 24. Mean differences among groups were compared by Mann-Whitney U-test. Results: Obtained results showed that total sperm count (224.7 [117-369] vs. 119.7 [64.8-442.8]; P = 0.011) and the percentage of rapid progressively motile sperm were significantly higher in the vegan group compared with the non-vegan group (1 [0-7] vs. 17.5 [15-30]; P < 0.0001). Furthermore, the oxidation-reduction potential (0.4 [0.3-0.9] vs. 1.5 [0.6-2.8]; P < 0.0001) and the proportion of spermatozoon with DNA damage (14.7 [7-33.5] vs. 8.2 [3-19.5]; P = 0.05) were significantly higher in the non-vegan group in comparison to the vegan group. The study was also age Controlled, No smoking & no alcohol for all participants, and BMI controlled. Summary - Vegan Men had nearly 1.88X the Sperm count, 17X more rapid mobile sperm, 3X less oxidization sperm resistance, and 1.8X less sperm DNA damage compared to the Omnivore men

Invisibility Posted January 21, 2023 Posted January 21, 2023 Well unless it affects taste or something then I'm good with omnivore dick!
Delirious Posted January 21, 2023 Posted January 21, 2023 Well that's because they tested a lot of meat eaters who are fat and the study is only 20 people which is too small of a sample size.

Lemonjuice Posted January 21, 2023 Posted January 21, 2023 Ok then all people should honestly eat meat. If the purpose of the study was to convince people to switch to veganism, they failed

We need a larger sample size followup

Screaming sis, (agree tho). It's not really a brand new information that men with a plant based diet have a better quality sperm, old Tea.

Sugar-Rush Posted January 21, 2023 Posted January 21, 2023 This is the dumbest thing I've ever read. Humans have been omnivores since the dawn of our species, and yet that didn't affect our sperm count for thousands of years. Also even if this were true, men supposedly having worse sperm count now would be a good thing given overpopulation.

Although in the past 100 years of tracking, sperm counts worldwide on a population scale have steadily been decreasing, while animal product consumption has steadily increased, although that's just a association but does likely explain the findings for this small study. My point is that we as a species managed to procreate just fine for thousands of years and got to over 7 billion people WW while still eating meat, so this study's implication that we need to go vegan to increase sperm count in men is ******* stupid because we did well enough getting to this point without veganism becoming everyone's mandated diet.
getback Posted January 21, 2023 Posted January 21, 2023 sample size of 20? that's not even CLOSE to the standard sample size

Your presumption is on what our ancestors ate, and it certainly wasnt what we eat today in most Western countries on average even if not 100% plantbased. That said I havent seen any studies for any type of meat protecting Human DNA cells from damage, although there are some for plants, like blueberries for example https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23507228/
Into The Void Posted January 21, 2023 Posted January 21, 2023 Well I'm not trying to procreate anyway
