RAYE - 'My 21st Century Blues'

I like some of this but some of it I need some time with…

the highs are HIGH though! “Environmental Anxiety” is so unique :jonny4: I can see it being used in climate change commercials tbh

“Five Star Hotels” is a BOP. Raye ate but Mahalia kind of devoured her with that verse? :coffee:

It's not a perfect album, but it's a perfect debut. It shows RAYE's ambition as an artist, her versatility, confidence. I really like it and I'm pumped for what's next.

If she released these (still great) pop tracks she'd end up like Ava Max - acclaimed by bunch of forums gays, with 0 hits, 0 interest from the GP, 0 interest from critics, minimal audience growth and no tour demand :emofish: She made the right call

Welp, somebody had to say it… it’s true though. If that’s what people wanted to hear they should’ve listened to that other album instead

My 21st Century Blues is concerned with her artistry, expression and talent foremost. She created a full body of work that tells her story exactly as it should. It’s not about bops or whatever; it’s diverse creative genius and nobody should be pigeonholing her against this

Some in here didn’t get nice and comfortable and lock their phones I fear

The album is brilliant. She really poured her heart and soul into it, and it can be heard. It's an amazing album especially for a debut.

People that expected her to do dance music really don't know what she's been through. She's been doing so much dance music because her previous label wanted it and how did that work out for her, hits with no record out in seven years and more personal songs given to other artists or locked away. I'm so happy she poured her heart into this and did her own thing, she has many bops out there and as you say people can go listen to them, now it's time to enjoy her creativity.

Absolutely! And the fact that it has worked out so well for her is such vindication, this is one of the greatest success stories I can think of in recent music and is a testament to the fact that the artist knows best :clap3:

Finally about to listen to this :jonny5: I'm not expecting anything on Escapism's level but I'll be satisfied even if the songs are half as good :duca:

The way Marina is continually being quoted in relation to this album... ahh her influence knows NO bounds.

Black Mascara was great, but everything else I just found okay. It was kinda giving all the stuff I don't like about Lily's albums (mainly from Sheezus on). Good for her getting an album out as an indie and it seeming to do well.

Five Star Hotels is the obvious follow up smash waiting to happen, someone push this song to the TikTokers and get Raye her next smash

Very solid and cohesive album! I enjoyed basically all of it although I wasn't completely paying attention because I was doing house chores, I'll come back to hear it again considering it truly is nice.

This album is absolute perfection. Listened front to back twice. She’s an icon in the making for sure. :clap3:

Listening to this rn, based on her story I'm rooting heavily for her!

Who said the second half is bad? :biblio:

Of the new tracks, Worth It and Buss It Down are the standouts on first listen. Oscar Winning Tears is up there too.

Still at work but I can already tell this album will hit even better later once I get high and drunk as intended.

It was a pretty solid debut. There's so much talent, versatility, and passion in here. :heart2:

Escapism, Black Mascara, and Ice Cream Man are her best songs. The run from Oscar Winning Tears to Flip A Switch was fantastic. I do understand why some of the critics/people were coming for the 2nd half because it was a bit messy, but there are truly no stinkers/major skips. To me, it sounds like she's trying to show off her versatility especially since this is her long awaited debut album though.

Overall, this entire era has been such a trimph so I'm happy for her. I hope Ice Cream Man also smashes. She is incredibly talented and I'll be so perched for her future releases. Pretty sure her next record will be even better. :jonny5:
