Muddy Feet & Jaded are the next tier Handstand would benefit from another chorus and removing the monologue Violet Chemistry is promising but something about the beat feels so dated I’m co-signing everyone saying Wildcard is filler, whew. Island & Wonder Woman don’t really go anywhere You had a lot of promise but agreed that the beats are garbage RCL* bless, I keep wanting wanting to refer to it as rose colored glasses
Cherish Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 not the PM part of the album already being better
Cherish Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 not feat. Sia & Brandi when they're not even singing on the tracks, just providing background vocals I'm taking them off the titles and yall can seethe
Freakshowvato Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 This album is similar to The Art of Starting Over musically and that's one of my fav albums of all time so naturally I love this
abelfenty Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 1. River 2. Rose Coloured Lenses 3. Muddy Feet 4. Jaded 5. Violent Chemistry 6. Flowers 7. You 8. Wonder Woman 9. Handstand 10. Island 11. Wildcard 12. Thousand Miles Rating: 7.5/10 Overall a good body of work but Thousand Miles could’ve been kept Sonically a nice progression from Plastic Hearts
Cottonmouth Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 (edited) Just finished my first full listen... Flowers (10/10) - Already a classic. So effortlessly chilled and groovy. Jaded (7/10) - This is nice. I was worried about hearing the chorus from the snippet. But the verses and production really compliment it. Very Time Of Our Lives Miley. Rose Coloured Lenses (8/10) - Good song again. Feels like it needs a good post-chorus. A Thousand Miles (8/10) - Really surprised that I like this a lot. Reminds me an early 2000s songs by the likes of Jewel. You (4/10) - She should have kept this off the album. The live version is a lot better. The song itself doesn't do much for me. Taste Of My Own, Mirror or FUF would have been a better addition even if they weren't recorded for ESV. Handstand (10/10) - Best song on the album! Already one of my most played. Wouldn't work well as a single due to it's composition. But it's so sonically different to anything out there, I love it. I definitely feel the Spring Breakers vibe with this. I wish there was a bit more of rhe song but it will have to do. A mashup of this and Duke Dumonts "Ocean Drive" would be heavenly. I wish she leaned more heavily into this sound with the whole record. River (5/10) - Slightly growing on me. Good prechorus but the chorus is so underwhelming and the production doesn't sound as explosive as it should. I don't thibk her voice works on it. The final chorus slightly saves it. Violet Chemistry (6/10) - The transition from the verse to the chorus sounds so weird. Her vocals on this don't really go with the song again. It is a really nice song but the composition feels off. The production again doesn't sound as explosive as it should. Muddy Feet (6/10) - What was the point of crediting Sia if she's on it for 10 seconds. Either way I like the song. I feel like it would sound better on Platic Hearts than ESV. This is one if there songs where the length of tje song actually hinders it. It needs another minute extra. It feels underbaked. Wildcard (4/10) - This doesn't do anything for me. It reminds me of Tove Lo for some reason. I feel like she would have something more substantial with the song. Island (7/10) - I really like the production on this. I feel like more could have been done with the chorus because the verses are stellar. Wonder Woman (4/10) - This doesn't do anything for me. After listening to River and Violet Chemistry earlier, I was a bit worried that I'd be really underwhelmed. I am slightly underwhelmed as I wish she leaned more heavily to the sound of Handstand for the record. Most of my issues come from lacklustre choruses, underwhelming production and even Miley's vocals in some areas. Not to mention, this album does feel very safe for Miley's standards. It's a decent record, but definitely not my favourite from her. I wish she took more risks with this record. AM is significantly better than PM. It feels similar to Plastic Hearts whereby the latter half of the album lacks the personality and focus as the first half of the record. As others have said, Taste Of My Own would have sounded great on here. Best Song: Handstand Edited March 10, 2023 by Cottonmouth
FlyOnTheWall Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 How is Wildcard not among everyone's favorites I was SHOCKED at how good it is after all the lukewarm reception to it in here... that chorus is to die for
Freakshowvato Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 1. Rose Colored Lenses 2. Muddy Feet 3. Island 4. Wildcard 5. Flowers 6. Thousand Miles 7. Jaded 8. Violet Chemistry 9. River 10. Headstand 11. You 12. Wonder Woman
Cherish Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 Wildcard is weirdly muffled, but I still like it actually. If you want an unnecessary track, go check out You

josesuxx Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 I'm 100% satisfied with the record after my 2nd listen! She's done it, again
Freakshowvato Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 You is like a slightly cringe song that still borderline works, kind of like some of Midnights. This album is similar to Midnights in that not everyone will get it and both have more of a mellow tone. Overall I rate this album 90/100, it's very fun for the spring/summer and Miley's best work yet
FlyOnTheWall Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 Second listen done and it's really an amazing album/body of work... wonder woman is the perfect closer, it's gorgeous... oh milene... you did it again!

tbhmatt Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 Synopsis: An eclectic group of songs that toes the line between psychedelic, funk, tropical & acoustic rock without ever clearly committing to one distinctive sound. The sequencing is an absolute mess and there’s a few… interesting production choices that ultimately just distracted me. Whilst I don’t think there’s anything terrible on here, I found most of the songs never really delivered on what they promised. So many songs just lacked something. I feel like she had an opportunity here to create a clear, cohesive soundscape and whilst some songs headed in that direction, it just didn’t all come together for me. Lyrically and thematically, I think this album just doesn’t come together or commit to a clear theme or concept. A song like “You” is thematically a complete and direct contradiction to a song like “Flowers” which literally launched the campaign. She could have made it work if the album sequencing was told in a way that clearly depicts the story of a relationship beginning & ending but it doesn’t quite achieve that. It feels like a bunch of songs were just thrown in there for the sake of it. A real shame, as everything was so promising. Favourites: Jaded, Violet Chemistry and Island (I guess?) Here are my initial track-by-track thoughts I wrote down as I was listening: FLOWERS An obvious smash, as we all know JADED A mellow song with a gorgeous pre chorus melody, the guitars really work well. I like the chorus but think it’s a little noisy but that might be the quality of my cheapass earphones lol. This is a great song, will definitely come back to it. ROSE COLOURED LENSES It’s nice and I’m a fan of the mellow vibe the album is giving so far but I feel like this song suffers slightly by not giving itself enough room to breathe. It’s hard to distinguish the verses to the pre chorus to the chorus, it all just feels a bit ‘monotone’. It almost works, but not quite. I do like the sort of psychedelic feel to the instrumental. THOUSAND MILES In a weird way that most people will probably disagree with, I actually think this needs to be stripped back even further. I mean, all this really needs is an acoustic guitar and her voice. It’s a strong melody with a beautiful message. Some.. interesting production choices that I find a little distracting. Still a thoroughly enjoyable listen. YOU I enjoyed it, again some very weird production elements scattered in there that I didn’t see the point of. Not much else to say on this one. HANDSTAND More psychedelic elements that really fits the aesthetic and groove of the album. Is this a song? Is it an interlude? I have absolutely no idea. I feel like it should be either an intro or an interlude but this is an example of weird production elements that actually made the song interesting instead of distracting. Not much replay value to it out of the context of the album, but an interesting listen. I wouldn’t listen to this on its own though. RIVER I love the strong 80s influence but again I think this suffers heavily from the same issue I had with Rose Colored Lenses. The chorus just does not stand out at all compared to the rest of the song and I think a large part of that is the instrumental barely changing from the verses/pre chorus in to the chorus. I feel a little.. underwhelmed? VIOLET CHEMISTRY And just like that, they instantly corrected that issue with the next track. This chorus hits so much harder because the switch in production, the added layers during the chorus just punches. This would have been a much better choice for a single. MUDDY FEET Full of promise but just doesn’t deliver… the chorus sounds like a pre chorus but it literally goes.. no where? Just a very odd listening experience. Sia’s presence on the track is completely unnecessary. I don’t hate it but again I don’t see myself listening to this much. WILDCARD I am personally not a massive fan of songs that slow down the tempo for the chorus, it just kinda feels like it defeats the point? It’s not really standing out to me on first listen. ISLAND I like the cute tropical vibes but again… I feel like I’m waiting for the punch to be delivered and I’m left a little flat again? The verses & pre chorus is very strong but I’m not feeling the chorus which seems to be a recurring theme with this album.. WONDER WOMAN The only thing I’m taking away from this song is the vocal glitch just shy of the one minute mark.
wish Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 I do like Wildcard but it's just the production that confuses me
tbhmatt Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 I’m not completely writing this album off, but I am very underwhelmed after my first listen. So far I only see myself coming back to Violet Chemistry and Jaded.
Abracadabra Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 I personally think the album is great, and I don't really get the comments about it not being "Miley enough", if there's one thing her career has shown us it's that she definitely is not just one thing and her music can't really be put in a box. Having said that, I do think there is a lot of her personality and unique flair across the album. Also not getting the Hannah Montana comparisons to River, at all lmao. My early standouts are Handstand, Violet Chemistry, Island, and Wonder Woman but that will probably shift after more listens. Have a feeling this album will grow on a lot of people. I remember similar comments about being underwhelmed when Plastic Hearts first came out, and we all saw how that changed. Now please give us a TOUR
