smoore95GAGA Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 My ranking of the album: 1. VC 2. Jaded 3. Thousand Miles 4. Handstand 5. Rose Colored Lenses 6. River 7. Wonder Woman 8. Flowers 9. Island 10. Muddy Feet 11. Wildcard 12. You
WiredBrain Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 So I've just listened to Something to Live For for the first time and Jesus Christ why wasn't this released, would have been a perfect second single after Flowers or even on PH.
Blank Space Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 Whoever mixed this album should be fired immediately. Also don't get the Jaded hype. Her voice sounds so ugly in the chorus.

zasderfght Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 (edited) After a full second listen (the album is quite short), Jaded or Rose Colored Glasses would've made a better second single than River. Handstand is the true highlight and deserves the praise it's getting on here, but between the opening monologue and the lyric-less middle, it's not a radio-friendly hit. I'd give this album a C- or a 2/5. The first 3 tracks are OK, Handstand is great, and I don't care for the rest. The true dud here is probably Island. I can't think of a more boring pop song. ESV is definitely better than the abomination that was Dead Petz and the She is Coming EP, but it's missing the camp/energy of Bangerz (which could've used some more "bangers," to be completely honest) and the consistency, soul, and attitude of Plastic Hearts. The album teaser had me quite excited, but things (imo) went downhill after Flowers was released. I'm happy Miley scored a #1, but it's just a meh song and it's not as interesting as the visuals and aesthetic Handstand offered. A darker, seedier summer sound with crazy synths would've made for an EXCELLENT follow-up album. Edited March 9, 2023 by zasderfght
DanMex Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 I can’t hear the sampling in Muddy Feet, it’s clear that GIAB wasn’t the reference, but which song made it???

Rigalo Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 I loved the VC snippet so I’m really excited for tonight
yonsé Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 muddy feet is AMAZING who the hell lied and said it wasn't good? check your ears.
LittleFreak Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 I love Jaded, it's definitely a highlight and my fave from this album, Thousand Miles and Rose Coloured Lenses are a cute surprise too. Handstand is interesting, but I don't really like the spoken word intro. I enjoy the chorus of Violet Chemistry, and River is catchy, but I don't really see it becoming a hit. The rest is just okay. Overall, It's a nice album, but I expected something better. I hope it grows on me, though.

I can’t wait to listen and decide for myself its incredible. a career high for ol' girl. no skips imo
mylicious Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 Is it out in NZ or will it be a worldwide release?
HeavyMetalAura Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 oKAY. I had my first listen, and I am very pleasantly surprised. Based on Flowers, the ATRL reaction, and the overall vibe, I was bracing myself to be disappointed. My thoughts: Jaded and Rose Colored Lenses sound really nice, they also sound like the vibey kind of alt pop that TikTok teens love. She made a smart choice putting them behind Flowers on the trackless, I could see either one doing well. Thousand Miles is meh, the harmonica (? I think it was a harmonica, idk I only listened to this one once) is the only part I loved but it's not bad by any means. Reminds me of Breakout. You is kind of a letdown, the live version is one of my all-time favorite Miley tracks, just sounds like a stadium rocker and a classic song. The production takes away the rawness, and I think I'm gonna replace this with You (Take Two) Handstand is INCREDIBLE, I love electronic songs with psychedelic elements. I only wish that she hadn't given us the two snippets in the trailer and tracklist reveal because my weave would have been SNATCHED had I not been expecting it, but wow, definitely a cool ass song. RIVER WOW. Everyone who said this sounded like a basic gay 2010 bop was RIGHT. This sent me right back to the days of early Kesha and post-Blackout Britney, it's SO GOOD. I'm so glad they're pushing it with a video and playlisting and my only hope is that it becomes a smash and inspires that sound to make a comeback. Definitely one of my favorite Miley songs ever, she really did that. Violet Chemistry - SO good. I think this song and the two that came before it are my trinity. I need more electropop Miley. Muddy Feet - unnecessary, Sia's melodic oohing was the only good part. Wild Card - I feel like this is a grower? It's not bad, I like the verses, but the chorus could be better. I have a feeling it'll grow on me. Island - same as Wild Card. I like it, it's very chill, but I think I'll need a few more listens to love it. Wonder Woman - a nice ballad, not her best but it does the job. Overall I'd say this isn't her best album but its squarely in the middle. My favorites are Handstand, River, and Chemistry (and the live version of You, what the hell), with Rose Colored Glasses being up there too. I think Wild Card and Island are gonna be growers. Overall I'm pleased.

MagneticElectric Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 I’m really looking forward to this album, not sure why some people were expecting another ‘Plastic Hearts’ surely by now we know Miley likes to switch things with each era. The teasers from this album has me very excited!
HeavyMetalAura Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 Also Miley has never been one to be "on trend" ever since Bangerz, but I'm kind of shocked with how effortlessly she seems to be adapting to today's sounds (as evidenced by the overwhelming success of Flowers). Jaded and Rose Colored glasses really do sound made for the vibey alt TikTok teens, and a lot of the album is very reminiscent of Harry's House and Midnights, two of the most successful pop albums in recent memory. Miley said I want HITS this era.
SmashingMiley Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 My ranking after 3/4 listens: Flowers - 8.5/10 Jaded - 11/10 easily the best song Rose Colored Lenses - 8.5/10. very Harry’s House-esque Thousand Miles - 9.5/10. This is what YN wished to be but wasn’t You - 7/10. The live version is superior sadly Handstand - 9/10. An experimental standout River - 9.5/10. CBT-esque excellence Violet Chemistry - 10/10. A career hightlight! Muddy Feet - 8/10. Sia feature is so unnecessary Wildcard - 9/10. Defo a grower Island - 9/10 Wonder Woman - 8.5/10. Nice piano ballad for a closing track Overall: 9/10 Up there with PH as her best albums ATRL hating as per usual
