OnlyManInTheWorld Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 Is it just me or this album is a little a bit of Miley from all previous eras? Muddy Feet is giving me Bangerz vibes.

River kinda serves pop-b for me like those who aren't really mainstream like idk jessie ware (?) with miley's a-list investment if this turns out to be a hit it will be SO good for her i see it doing way better on streaming than on radio tho. still didn't listen to jaded, will try to wait until tomorrow
perpetual novice Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 this album just screams contractual obligation to me idk. none of the songs feel really inspired and the way Flowers was dropped and just left to do its thing said a lot. the success of that song is truly a mystery to me I wish the hype around this era could have been spent on her previous album.
smoore95GAGA Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 This is a weird album I’m ngl. Whereas PH was straightforward pop rock candy, this album struggles with an identity crisis. You have chill songs like Flowers, Rose Colored Lenses, Thousand Miles and Island. Then you have bops like River and Violet Chemistry, which are dare I say the only straightforward songs on the album (besides Flowers). Jaded, You, Muddy Feet and Wildcard are weird songs that just confuse me. They kind of go nowhere, but I think that’s kind of the point And then there’s the simplistic piano ballad Wonder Woman, and while I enjoy it, she has better ballads. And then you have Handstand which is basically a glorified tour interlude I guess I was the only one that was hoping the part from the album trailer she posted wouldn’t be on the actual album, cuz it’s just a bizarre moment that goes into a straightforward bop. A NMR by Billie tea, except Billie pulled it off better because at least it flew into the next song. Overall, I’ll definitely bop to River and VC, and there’s things to like about some of the other songs, but as a whole this is kind of a mess I’m ngl. 5/10 for me.
ATRL Moderator Verge of Obscene Posted March 9, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted March 9, 2023 the tracklist sequencing is not good but the songs are! Jaded could be a classic

BadX Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 some of y’all…. oh I LOVED the album, some of y’all really scared me into thinking I’d hate it flowers is really among the weakest tracks
motomami Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 "This album lacks character" "This album has an identity crisis" The music is great and fun, go light up a blunt and you'll like it more. Island SOTY, also why does Wonder Woman sound so familiar? Melody just sounds like something I've heard before but can't place it.
smilervoticat Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 Idk this just seems like a natural sonic and lyrical progression for Miley like her current moods seem to sway the direction of her sound. She’s not angry anymore so ofc we’re not getting anymore WTFDOIK or Midnight Sky

Obsession Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 (edited) I like this. I don’t know if I would say it’s as good as PH but it’s very solid and VERY Miley. It’s also very like Bangerz and She Is Coming coded, with a sprinkle of rock Miley. Edited March 9, 2023 by Obsession

Gladiator Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 Muddy Feet is very out of place and if it was on another album, I'd be here for it, but sonically it just takes me out and I would say it is probably the only skip for me after a second listen.

iknowplaces Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 River is definitely a bop on the first listen. Other tracks... I dunno. I might get into more tracks. There is potential. But yeah, it feels inauthentic as a whole. Like a Harry Styles album. Plastic Hearts felt more authentic and fun. Nevertheless, I think the GP will eat it up like Flowers.

TMP Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 I had to listen to the album twice in raw because it's absolutely not what I was expected from her now. To me, it's like a step between "Younger Now" and "Her Dead Petz". She's giving us pop-folk and some very good alternatives productions ! River is my favorite so far at the time but, Muddy Feet is also amazing ! FR review https://the-melting-pop.blogspot.com/2023/03/critique-miley-cyrus-surprenante-sur.html
enchanted0 Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 This album feels half assed. It's just the same ****, they just put chorus and phaser on some guitars and called it a day Handstand is cool though
Dangerous Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 (edited) "Taste of My Own" is better than anything on this album. Edited April 17, 2023 by Dangerous
thatsmydemi Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 (edited) Surprisingly, the tracks you are hyping the most are the tracks that let me down. Rose? What are y'all hyping exactly? It bored me. Violet Chemistry... I had high expectations but the mixing is AWFUL and it's missing something. As for River, I keep reading the verses are amazing but they are just ok. It's final verse the one that is actually good. The chorus is so weak. Thousand Miles is really good. I enjoyed that one a lot. Muddy Feet is surprisingly one of the tracks I enjoyed the most as well. There is one with really cool and interesting production (I assume it's Handstand?). 2 tracks to finish. Flowers' smashery kinda fooled everyone tbh. Edited March 9, 2023 by thatsmydemi
mathekr Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 The whole album sounds very uninspired, crafted for playlisting and pop radio. Such a let down after such a well crafted album like Plastic Hearts. Won't be returning to it much. The live version of You is soooo much better than this version btw
