woah @ selena. It really seemed like this was going to be her era, her star profile seemed bigger than ever, IAM smashing, Revival being her biggest era so far...what went wrong? talk about self sabotage :jonny:

it's a left field kind of song sure, but I still think with actual promo it could have done much better

I see why they thought Bad Liar would smash. It's minimalistic, catchy, and about the most powerful musician under 30.

The problem is that it isn't the type of track the GP likes when its shoved in their faces. It's the type of track that if it were to get big, it would have to be from people sharing it on their own. If Kiiara released it it would probably have a more natural chart life 'cause she wouldn't be pushing it to everyone but would let it build up naturally. Presentation and the artist matter a lot esp with these slightly left-field (for the GP, not for music stans like us) songs like Bad Liar.

Hoping Selena can bounce back.

No. The best thing they can do is either A. let fans naturally build the song up. It's a grower and a sharer track - not an instant smash like Despacito. or B. ditch it for something more instantly likable

TBH I wanted Swish Swish to smash. Nicki's verse is great and the beat is the best one from Witness so far :jamming:

You might be right, but the problem is the record labels of the pop girls HAVE to shove their songs in everybody's faces instantly. If they don't, then their song debuts at #84 on the Hot 100 and the Internet goes into melt-down and the fans of the rival pop girls go all over Twitter saying their career is over, which is bad PR. So I don't really know... I mean look how people are reacting to the debuts this week.

They can try and let the songs have a natural climb like all the other songs do, but if they do that then they have to endure about 3 months of drama on the Internet about the song "flopping" before it actually becomes a hit. If a Katy Perry or Selena Gomez song has a normal 98-85-78-81-65-etc. chart run like most songs do, the fans aren't going to sit there patiently waiting for it to happen, they'll just all say it's a massive flop after the 1st or 2nd week. I honestly don't know how people coped with Needed Me and Cheap Thrills last year haha. I guess with Sia at least she's not pitted against the other pop girls so she got away with it easier.

The GP doesn't know or care about flops. Only pop music stans on ATRL/Twitter/KTT do. These labels need to catch up and realize you don't need to make a huge splash at first - you just need to make a song that people will actually want to share. Even if that takes six months.

ADELE's singles post-Hello were all risers for example.

Which yet again has no bearing on its chart performance / run.

Not sure what you were trying to achieve with this comment but sending you a virtual hug and bearing a gift as well (a chill pill).

i think shape of you will have longevity to fend off the Justin song. Hopefully shape of you gets 30+ weeks top 10.

I hope Selena Gomez won't scrap Bad Liar. It's truly a great song, it's best to stick with her work even if the album underperforms.

+ It Ain't Me only took off thanks to Selena (at least in the US). I don't think the GP "doesn't care" about Selena at all ☕️

The new Linkin Park album is terrible but their fans also should stop preaching. I mean they kind of went back to their roots on The Hunting Party and they didn't care. The fact that this did what THP did in 2014 shows how irrelevant those meltdowns are

IAM isn't really smashing :celestial5: It's pretty big, especially on pop radio, but it's definitely not on the level of GFY or SOL.

24K Magic was robbed :rip:

What were the albums that blocked it? It'll probably outsell both in the US smh

TWIL did wonders for the albums longevity so I'm hoping VOTF can pull through and take the album well into the summer and fall.

It will.

24k is doing better than everyone in pure sales.  King.

IAM isn't smashing? It's her biggest hit worldwide so far and it has ALREADY passed GFY and SOL on Spotify.

Three and a half months after it was launched it's still getting almost 3 million plays daily (more than Bad Liar btw).

All with no promo btw.

Ignoring the fact that IAM is a hit in 2017 and GFY/SOL were hits in 2015—obviously IAM will have a huge advantage in terms of Spotify numbers (what you're saying is like saying Fake Love was a bigger hit than Hold On, We're Going Home because FL has more Spotify streams but in reality the difference can be attributed to streaming's growth)—this is the Hot 100 thread. I'm not talking about WW numbers. It hasn't had the success of GFY and SOL on the H100 because its streaming has been comparatively weak (which is not particularly surprising considering the current mainstream climate, which favors urban music more than 2015's climate did). YouTube Insights is not cooperating with me on mobile, but I think it's only pulling around 3/4M YT streams a week. On Spotify, it's been hanging out in the 20s. It's doing just as well as GFY and SOL did on radio, though.
