Are The Gays™ Just Box Office Poison?

With Bros currently tanking, and more mainstream attempts at gay inclusion putting off viewers of films like Eternals and Lightyear, is it time for us to accept that gays are box office poison? People will cite exceptions, but it is rare for a gay themed movie to crack $100 million at the box office, and gay franchise fare always tends to under-perform expectations, or be the worst received, or lowest grossing in whatever franchise the gays are featured in. With the exception of Brokeback Mountain, most gay themed films struggle to crack $70 million even with excellent word of mouth. Is the gp more comfortable with lesbian movies? Everything Everywhere All At Once smashed, but why can't gay films smash as well?

Eh. This seems like you’re giving a vocal minority too much power. No one really cares about Disney’s millionth first gay anything.

You answered yourself. An attempt, if they went all out including genuinely, it would do well. That's why streaming in its all out inclusion does well.

Putting out a mediocre movie and marketing it as some important first time ever thing is a diservice to gay people. No one outside of gay activists would fall for capitalistic propaganda and would waste their money and time on unappealing films. Lightyears and Eternals were never appealing compared to other Disney/Marvel franchises, so them slapping gay characters to create interest in films with little interests by using gay identities is rather insulting, especially when you know they will try to use it to get money off of LGBT people and liberals and then blame gays when the movies still end up flopping because there was no buzz or interest in the movie to begin with.

We had so many successful gay movies/shows, but currently they aren’t sticking cause they market them as the best thing since sliced bread.

Show, don’t tell.

No, badly marketed movies are box office poison. Eternals and Lightyear also have NOTHING to do with the LGBT community and are just an example of Disney trying to promote themselves as allies for the littlest thing possible.

It's obvious that they are, they are literal minorities? :rip:

and not the kind of race or s*x, where it is still a pretty big percentage

isn't only 20% of the world, lgbtq?

Imagine the gay percentage of that :deadbanana4:

That’s because most of these are from small studios, Grace Randolph.

Hollywood needs to stop making “gay themed” movies and just make good movies with gay characters. The UK and Europe do this already. They have a lot of amazing shows and movies where I didn’t know the lead was gay until I started watching. Being gay shouldn’t be the selling point of the movie.

And in the rare cases this happens in Hollywood (Eternals per example) the studio always demand for a pat in the back, acclaim and lgbt+ awards, which makes the inclusion feel very phony.

No? Wasnt lightyear on disney plus? Also who is going to see a gay movie with RANDOM actors. The reason BB mountain smashed was because of the A-list talent! :coffee2: Its odd that people like you just want to give up because of a few flops. Do you know how many "straight" movies are box office poison?? :deadbanana:

Lightyear was released theatrically.

Movies from small studios CAN break out you know? Look at all the A24 crossover hits.

Some of these movies made less than $20M at the box office though.

The $100M figure is so stupid because no gay film where a same sex relationship is the main plot has received that level of push/budget to begin with. No precedent, no argument. :deadbanana4:

These stories are given minimal budget and meant to be marketed for award show fodder because doing something as daring as kissing a man when you’re straight is supposed to be groundbreaking (see Harry Styles).

The Billy movie was never going to do massive numbers but could’ve done better had Billy not been the lead and had the marketing not alienated the core demo.

Bros had a 22 million dollar production budget and reported 30-40 million dollar promotional budget though. :psyduck:

Brokeback Mountain was a masterpiece because the actors were great.

Are you seriously claiming Lightyear and Eternals as gay movies because of 0.0001 seconds of gay inclusion? Bros tanked but that's because it sucked and it has an unlikeable lead. Gays just need better movies.
