As much as I can’t stand Billy Eichner this is disappointing and could sadly send the wrong message to the studio heads. Let’s hope it isn’t the case but we know how Hollywood is.

Also I wasn’t at all impressed with the trailer for Smile but I’ve heard good things from everyone who’s seen it so far. Maybe I should watch. Low budget horror movies have been kinda killing it this year and that makes me happy.

Shitting all over other gay media and alienating the core audience with obnoxious marketing will do that to a movie.

Is anyone surprised this cringe-fest didn't do well? The entire pretentious, SJW-fueled rollout has been beyond embarrassing. Maybe if you want to normalize movies with gay characters, just make a normal movie that happens to have gay romantic leads instead of this whole LGTBQIWXZY pride fest.

With that, shoutout to the CMBYN & Love Simon/Victor's of the world that are actually breaking barriers by being normal.

 This facile argument is already boring. Can y'all ever acknowledge there's no right/wrong way to be queer or represent queerness in media? This movie surely represents a lot of gay men's experiences, and films like CMBYN and Love Simon aren't "better" by default for engaging more directly with homonormativity.

(And the NERVE to congratulate Love Victor for anything when the writing, acting, plotting were all awful :skull:)

Being normal? The homophobia jumped out.

That’s actually the point of the movie, gay and straight relationships are NOT the same. And not you shouting out an almost pedophilia storyline and a series so bland that was made for straights.

I mean, from all the trailers I saw, it looked pretty horrible, which didn’t really vibe with all the marketing I saw (and even word of mouth I heard from people who, uh, hadn’t seen it yet) about it being the best movie of the year. Not too surprising.

I hope this won't discourage Hollywood from supporting more adult-oriented (I don't mean porn) gay stories to focus on the sanitized Heartstopper, Love Simon type of content that highschoolers and women like.

I hope you learn to love yourself someday. Maybe you think everyones just jumping on you to be woke but i feel like someday you’ll reread posts like this and realize just how sad they were…

internalized homophobia is so sick. You’re literally happy that the only way queer movies can do well is by assimilating and playing to the most vanilla, palatable queer characters?  No one thinks that way if they aren’t also picking themselves apart in the same way. I promise you you were worth loving even when you were extra girlie and people made you feel about it. I hope you can find that again someday and not shut it out to yourself

The stereotyping in the trailer was offensive. And RomComs are pretty much over before they even start at the box office in the streaming era.

I went to an early screening and really enjoyed it for what it was: a GAY romcom. Some of these comments are really embarrassing, the internalized homophobia jumped out.

I hope this doesn't send out the wrong message and that more queer movies continue to be produced, especially that are geared more towards adults :emofish:

**** what the GP desires and what is normal. Movies like Bros should continue to be made to give the big middle finger to Hollywood

Marketing didn't do any good to Bros, sadly. It seems like a very basic rom com, while all the movies in the top 3 look way more interesting/worth the time at the theater.

I still look forward to seeing this film but let’s be real: Billy has been insufferable during this whole marketing campaign. Every single sponsored TikTok, no matter whose TikTok page it’s sponsored on, starts with “THE FIRST GAY FILM BY A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE STUDIO” when that’s not even true.

I lost 2 minutes of my life watching that cringe trailer that I'll never get back, why would I go and waste 2 hours more?

And this is domestic box office for the United States, this tanked ever harder globally

I can't really say I'm surprised. There's a lot of internalised homophobia and you can see it seeping out all over this thread, and the film thread. It's a shame. I'm looking forward to seeing it when it's released in a few weeks here in the UK.
