discussion Why are Catholics the most progressive western religion?

Yeah the teachings are outdated but most Catholics and those who grew up within the faith are more progressive and open minded then all western religions. Why? As a poc who has experienced racism, I’ve also found white Catholics (outside Fox News hosts) to be the nicest, not racist people in the United states.   I’ve tried going to other churches and dominations and they are not very nice and super fake and always racist.  Why?  
 

btw I’m now agnostic but if I have to stan a cult it’ll be that one.

i feel like catholics typically just value family/community above all else so if they view you as a part of the family/community they’ll just support you no matter what race, gender, sexuality, etc. you are.

This is simply not true. They're probably the most regressive and backward denomination of Christianity 

 

Anglican churches are definitely more progressive (though obviously not perfect).

As a person who was raised in Catholicism, I’d say that a lot of the churchgoers are very casual about their faith in general. The worship is not as intense or cult-like as some other Christian denominations. A lot of Catholic universities are pretty liberal too from what I’ve observed. You have a lot more freedom — however, that doesn’t mean there’s not judgmental/bigoted people throughout. Maybe they just hide it better.

Bingo. But why are white Catholics much loving and less racist in comparison to white Protestants ??!!!!!    Just facts.

Living in what was a very Catholic country I've always wondered this (at least in my experience). Everyone I know is "supposed" to be catholic, but no one really cares about the religion. It's like yeah we're from here so we're catholic by default, but religion isn't appealing at all anymore I'd say it's a dying thing which I couldn't be happier, but I guess it depends of the people and the country

it feels like you're trolling but the catholic church is anything but progressive  

religion in general is fundamentally a conservative institution but you can find individual progressive churches with inclusive congregations, catholicism in general is not that however

I think it might be due to the history of persecution that Catholics have faced in Western countries. In the United States for instance, Catholic immigrants went through decades of xenophobia and it's helped Catholics sympathize with a lot of marginalized groups today.

 

Also (this is anecdotal based on my experience being raised Catholic) even though the Catholic Church is an organized body, I find that a lot of Catholics aren't completely driven by the church's dogma and have a more progressive view of the religion. The church near my college even had a solidarity group for LGBT+ Catholics. I think a lot of it stems from the fact that many people may not share the church's political opinions but have a cultural connection to Catholicism.

 

This doesn't go to say that the religion as a whole is very progressive (there are still a lot of conservative Catholics), but I'm still impressed by how much progressive Catholics I see wherever I go.

Then why are Italian men so progressive compared to US/British men. (Toxic masculinity/racism/antiquated beliefs) Spanish men too. Im speaking of the church goers and those brought up on the faith, not the actual church and teachings itself.  No church is progressive. At all.
