When you’ve spent the past several years lighting a fire under the pop industry by way of sex-positive lyricism and a penchant for lipsmacking dance pop, at a time when “whisper music” is all the rage, how do you keep up that reputation? “At this point, it’s not exciting for me to drop a techno record,” Kim — who released a grinding Eurodance EP called **** Pop a few months ago — says. Instead, she’s switching it up, taking her fans and the public by surprise. Her next single, “If Jesus Was a Rockstar”, sidesteps her glossy stylings: it’s a big guitar-led track that has the anthemic feel of a 90s stadium ballad. “Stripping it back for the lead single and making a song with a message that means something to me was probably the most punk thing for me to do right now,” she says

Her americana era is here

I like it but can’t picture hearing it on the radio :baseball:

This is certainly one of the songs ever made, i'll give it that.

Good song that will flop into oblivion. They were on point with the lyric video visuals :jonnycat:

The same as everyone else is saying, it's just mediocre. It doesn't hit anywhere near as hard as Coconuts did this time last year.

It honestly makes me question whether she needs Luke more than we think, same with Katy when she separated from him & made Witness.

listened 5 min ago and already forgot what it sounds like

Bland trash, hope it bombs x

not great but happy #he isn't credited on this and hope this signifies that he will no longer be involved in her work

The verses are okayish…. I guess.

It sounds like a Fischer Price version of Bieber's Ghost

Ok I switched.

i love the song!!! Had it on repeat all night. It’s something different for her and I see what she’s trying to do :duca:

Coconuts is and always will be a horrible song tho.  This might at least get played on radio.

These lyrics are really really clunky. What exactly is this song about? It feels like they had the title and then ran out of ideas

With a title like this the lyrics need to add up to something. I think this will prevent it from becoming a hit

Her relationship with religion and struggle to fit in as a trans woman

Okay after a few listens I really like it!

I love the Outro and would hope for a bridge after the Instrumental and a final chorus

i quite enjoy the stripped down vibe her voice is good for a song like that maybe she can go into the early 00s direction like Ashlee Simpson maybe

MaxMartin Production is just a different vibe it sounds very rich

But yeah I’m not sure about it being a lead and/or successful single for her

Still proud she has a song with her icon as producer out

this is…fine, it’s Max on autopilot. they fumbled the bag with choosing this as the single unfortunately.

she’s at by far her biggest career peak, she needed a big bombastic song like Icy or Heart to Break

This song is objectively awful.

Kim led us to believe this song was about her wishing organized religion, church, and/or God was more accepting-- probably referring to God being more accepting to LGBTQ+ folks-- yet these lyrics make it seem like Kim would like God if he did a bunch of drugs and partied. Um, what?

Also, the beat is so boring and uninspired.

I hate to be the 50th person on ATRL to talk about how the entirety of Problematique was better than this song, but those users aren't wrong. Kim excels at Valley-girl pop bops. I'll even listen to the entirety of S-Pop before I listen to If Jesus Was A Rockstar again.

Cute and we all appreciate those SlutPop streams have an amazing weekend

It’s cute but a bit bland lyrically. I wish the lyrics were deeper, it just sounds like her “I wanna party with Jesus” line made into a song when it could’ve been a Losing My Religion level classic. :(

Gonna support anyway.
