Like nothing will ever make me stand for something and clap 11 minutes It's honestly so awkward even for the actors. Whenever I see one of those clips they're just standing around awkwardly not knowing what to do. But it's good press I guess. 1

Oop yeah, I just did a quick google and seems the act of nonsensical standing ovations is a marketing ploy for these movies that's slowly becoming more hated by these people.
Jay07 Posted September 4 Posted September 4 8 minutes ago, Doctor Dick said: Yeah but ones that sucked ass wouldn't get 11 minutes. Would Cats get 11 minutes? The worse the movie the shorter the claps, so while it doesn't mean this movie won't get panned a bit, it looks to be mixed at worst. This is an interesting article on how standing ovations can be manipulated and how usually buzzy films with starry casts get big ovations regardless of quality. Megalopolis and Blonde got ovations and they're crap. I honestly think Gaga is good in this role but ultimately ovations don't mean much https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/standing-ovations-cannes-film-festival-analysis-1235903673/ 1 1
DR0GO Posted September 4 Posted September 4 I remember reading some of the early reviews for the first film and they trashed the hell out of it (WaPo, Vox, IndieWire, Vanity Fair to name a few); maybe this is a similarly divisive film?
Gov Hooka Posted September 4 Posted September 4 28 minutes ago, Slap said: I'm not making a comment about this film's reception because clearly it will do well, but the standing ovation thing in general sounds like such a Hollywood circle jerk. Like can you imagine how culty it is to be standing and clapping for that ******* long for literally anything no matter how good it is? Like even the best thing I've ever seen I cannot imagine clapping for more than a minute max, it just feels so forced and cringe. Nah Forreal I'm going down a rabbit hole of these videos lmao and I feel like the majority of the crowds at these things are rich/well-off enough clout chasers that want to participate in the hysteria and celebrity worship behind these events. Agreed, super cringe. 1
Popular Post PlERRE Posted September 4 Popular Post Posted September 4 Almodóvar's movie got 17 minutes. Joker 11 minutes. Queer 9 minutes. Maria 8 minutes. The Clooney/Pitt 4 minutes. Madonna, Timberlake and Timbaland: 4 minutes to save the world 15
insomniac Posted September 4 Posted September 4 1 hour ago, suburbannature said: Hm? There are 7 films already in main competition that have gotten 9+ minute standing Os including one that went 17.5 minutes (Swinton and Moore in The Room Next Door) and one that went 12.7 minutes (Brutalist). Insufferable, imagine clapping for longer than 1 minute, which I already find cringe doing at the theater or opera
Fav Posted September 4 Posted September 4 (edited) Everybody gets standing ovation, just like every movie at Cannes in which X minutes is the bare minimum even if everybody knows it's a bad movie (didn't say it's the case for this one). However, Letterboxd, Metacritic and journals are giving the same vibe: mid https://www.indiewire.com/criticism/movies/joker-folie-a-deux-review-joaquin-phoenix-lady-gaga-1235043195/ Edited September 4 by Fav 2
illia Posted September 4 Posted September 4 I'm aware it's a sequel but do we know if it's necessary to watch the first movie to understand this one? I really dgaf about Joker like at all but I'm thinking of seeing JFAD for Gaga
FENTY. Posted September 4 Posted September 4 These long ass standing ovations are so cringe and awkward. But anyways it reminded me of this video. I had a good laugh
State of Grace. Posted September 4 Posted September 4 The arguments here over the length of the standing Os. Yall look ridiculous as hell The Venice people went a lil crazy this year though. 1

So it's better to watch the first movie... Spoiler I put it on 2x speed though 1

Hector Posted September 4 Posted September 4 Some reviews collected by Billboard: "Gaga is smartly low-key, not the Harley Quinn we associate with Margot Robbie, but her own person, dressed down and believably showing affection and connection with Joker and, more important, the man behind the makeup." – Deadline "The casting of Lady Gaga certainly sounded promising, because she's a great actor, and was put on earth (among other things) to make musicals. But Gaga, who has a lovely unforced presence in Folie à Deux, is drastically underused. Her Lee never quite takes wing." – Variety "Lady Gaga brings a sly and manipulative malice to her role: Harley is secretive, smart and genuinely disturbed in a way that Arthur/Joker perhaps isn't. Is she to be the Lady Macbeth of DC supervillainy?" – The Guardian "Gaga is a compelling live-wire presence, splitting the difference between affinity and obsession, while endearingly giving Arthur a shot of joy and hope that has him singing 'When You're Smiling' on his way to court." – The Hollywood Reporter "Gaga looks as if she's a Manson girl who's wandered off the set of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, and plays Harleen with an appealingly feline cruelty." – The Independent UK "Phillips' decision to cast a generational superstar in a role that seems designed to maximize both her supreme talents as a singer and her all-consuming screen presence as an actress just so he can sit her in the background of a courtroom whenever he's not cutting her musical numbers off at the knees… well, it's a lot more criminal than anything Arthur Fleck ever does in this movie." – IndieWire 2
babyforlife Posted September 5 Posted September 5 its lady gaga she never loses, despite what OGH's narratives brings us to believe...

The joker has always had awful reviews (and for dumb reasons that are too long to bring up) but it made a billion dollars, how do you think critics are going to affect an extremely anticipated sequel ?
