That was early. I thought leaks wouldn't Happen anymore thanks to streaming.

Oh my good, Keep Away is excellent :jonny5: I agree with @BANKS, it really is similar to Never Get To Hold You

Go Find Yourself or Whatever  is so cute a very nice chill ballad.

Bad Things Twice sounds nostalgic and fun, another gentle song.

I feel Far Away is a grower but the lyrics are sweet.

I think I can wait two weeks :chick3:

Title track is nostalgic I love it

Bad Thing Twice is THAT song.

My trinity is..

Surrender My Heart / Bends / Bad Thing Twice

(with Keep Away coming up the rear).

Apparently Swifties leaked it super early so she wouldn't take any attention from Taylor on release day since everyone in the stan world will have listened to this one already when it is available 2 weeks in advance. And when it comes to Carly her audience is more stan world focused.

She did it again.

I am always stunned how she manages to create such great albums with such ease, I am getting the same feeling I got from Dedicated when it first released.

With the singles releasing I was confused how it will all fit together but now that I heard the album it all ties in perfectly. This is a different album from Emotion and Dedicated even though some would say she always does the same thing. This project isn't as explosive as Emotion was and it isn't as icy polished sounding like Dedicated was. She allowed herself to have a bit more fun with this one and embraced a different atmosphere, there are even some more "quirky" tracks (though that is not the best thing at times).

I think there are two sides to the album:

Intro: Shooting Star - leans more on classic Carly banger

Ethereal: Far Away - Bends - Western Wind - Go Find Yourself or Whatever - No Thinking Over the Weekend - Keep Away

Banger: Joshua Tree - Talking to Yourself- Sideways - Beach House - So Nice - Bad Thing Twice - Anxious

Outro: The Loneliest Time - embraces both the banger and ethereal sides of the album.

Of course in usual Carly fashion it covers relationships and love, but to me it seems that while Emotion covered themes of breakup & craving and Dedicated covered self love and just happiness in general. This album is more melancholic in a way and covers what exactly opening up to love does a person. How isolating the search it can be what thoughts run through your head as it goes on. From feelings of hope, sexual desire, hurt, anticipation, infatuation, resentment and at the end of the day being content. The hard times and the good times of it all. I also like how it has a clear structure with the intro, core song and the outro.

Also I think while there are different sides to the album and songs that are widely different, it all gets tied together with the guitar as a central instrument that all the songs share together.

I have a feeling people won't appreciate it enough now on release and I recall that Dedicated had some people disappointed at first as well. This surely will given that there aren't as many of her usual pop smashes as expected but I think the audience will make their peace with that over time and grow to love the album.

Thoughts on each song:

1. Surrender My Heart is an immediate and explosive opener. It effectively covers the central theme of the album, she believes in love and wants to surrender her heart to it, leaving everything in the open. It is uplifting, hopeful and a classic Carly banger that everyone is already expecting from her. It is an anthem for low in a way.

2. Joshua Tree actually starts the story of the album, it is a groovy and darker sounding song. She doesn't just want love but she is craving it quite badly, she is dramatic about it. The production of the song to me makes it almost feel like she is creeping up on love and wants to almost catch or trap it in a way. Not let it come to her by itself. Which is funny to me because she always manages to add a slightly creepy and obsessed dimension to her songs.

3. Talking to Yourself is an instant banger that everyone wants from Carly just like Surrender My Heart. Alongside the previous song I think it introduces the inclusion of guitar in the album and how important it is for all the other songs. My only complaint really is that it isn't even longer and that the guitar solo isn't allowed to get carried away a bit more. Regardless of that it is catchy pop perfection.

4. Far Away is the first track that would probably be branded as filler. Honestly that is perfectly fine, it has interesting production elements and a beautiful payoff towards the end. It evokes the feeling of gliding through the clouds, which is exactly what she wants from her lover. She wants to ignore her problems, avoid serious conversations and just enjoy the bliss of love for a quick moment. A moment she wants to last forever. One thing that I appreciate is that the production ties in perfectly to Western Wind.

5. Sideways brings us back to the real world. It is celebratory track of love but I feel like it is also not a completely healthy thing, she sings about getting reassurance and confidence from her lover when things are going the wrong way, also tying into Far Away with her ignoring her problems. She lives only for the relationship and told him she loved him multiple times before he could even answer. She loves to get her way and I don't get the impression that they are on the same page. Though the whole song could be seen as self love as well, not love for someone else. Might seem as filler at first glance but it is an interesting track to think about and is a fun listen.

6. Beach House has been quite divisive ever since it released. I personally adore it so much and I feel like it showcases the chaos of dating apps and woes of the constantly rotating engagements with various people you won't ever see again. It explores the way rejection and differing expectations of the people involved affects her. The addition of the male vocalists adds a lot of personality to the song and is a risk that I am glad she took with this specific song. She definitely made this with tour and audience engagement in mind.

7. Bends continues the ethereal atmosphere started with Far Away, though this time she doesn't ignore the problems she once wanted to ignore. It uncovers that in love if she acknowledges the serious problems and fears she might just find that the other person will embrace her and reassure her. Not in a questionable way like in Sideways but in a way where she feels safe and content. The other person brings her hope and the warmth of the Sun. The production also adds to that overall feeling, the instrumental feels warm, pulsing and almost trance like. Evoking the relaxing feeling sunlight can bring to a person. Definitely among my favourites.

8. Western Wind confused a lot of people with it being the lead single, with succeeding singles being nothing like it. After hearing it in the album I feel like its release as the lead single makes a lot more sense. It is the heart of the album, it covers the same theme that Surrender My Heart but does it in a way that is unlike any previous Carly song. It is a change of sound and more closely resembles multiple album tracks. To describe the immense feeling that infatuation gives her she likens it to a great wind that carries you away. Another thing that is important in the song is the guitar solo which is a key thing that most of the singles share, as all of them have a guitar backing the song up in the background or somewhere as a production element. I hope this leads to her working with Rostam more for her next project.

9. So Nice is well, it would be a lovely song if the male vocals weren't included in it. The "la la la" is ruins whatever catchiness the song could have, it is jarring how much more listenable the song would be without that element. Definitely the worst song on the album and a definite skip. I don't really have an interpretation of the song due to this.

10. Bad Thing Twice sounds like a relaxed continuation to Talking To Yourself, I adore the bass and the acoustic guitar that back up the song. She knows she is returning to something that is maybe not the best to her but she just doesn't give a **** at all. Will she get her heart hurt? Maybe. Does she care? No. She doesn't even think about it, she wants it and no one will stop her. Maybe this is the way it will always be for her but she can blame no one but herself. The more whispery vocals towards the end are so catchy. It is excellent and a dark horse favourite that I feel will sneak up on a lot of people as time goes on.

11. Shooting Star is... interesting. The vocal processing that her voice is put through makes this sound like a track from Kylie's Disco, which of course isn't a bad thing at all as I love that album. It is a fun song that maybe leans more on filler territory than standout. It being a rework of Disco Sweat only further reassures me that we should be glad that never came out as an album.

12. Go Find Yourself or Whatever is absolutely gorgeous and an instant highlight from the album. She opens up her heart completely like she said she would in the. first track, she sends her lover away understanding that they are not meant for one another. Aware that she will never get that same amount of love and adoration from them that she gives, she let herself be completely vulnerable yet it meant nothing in the end. In Western Wind she was completely carried away by the affection she had but now the wind brought her down to Earth again. Gorgeous, gorgeous song.

13. The Loneliest Time continues on from where the previous track ends, it also captures the same "central theme" like Surrender My Heart did. It is fitting as a title track and the closing one. It has the "quirky" feeling of several songs and again brings in a male vocal with the feature and the spoken word bridge. She is content with all that she went through, while it may have been a bumpy and lonely ride she understands that it might happen all over again, she is okay with that. Sometimes she might not get what she wants from the other person, or the other way around but she knows that love will one day find an answer. That is all of course represented in the climactic sounding production and instrumental.

Bonus Tracks:

14. Anxious, just by the opening of this song you can immediately tell that it will be a massive retro banger that Carly excels at. It is a big standout from the entire project since it is quite different from everything else. Lyrically it does feel like it would be hard to find a place for it in the tracklist. I love the guitar and the space synths, if it was placed in the tracklist it would probably be right after or before Shooting Star in my opinion. It would have been great to replace that with this on the album since Shooting Star is a bit out of place as well.

15. No Thinking Over the Weekend feels like another chapter to the ethereal portion of the album. It is a lovely song but I do understand why she kept it as a bonus track as the theme of wanting to ignore problems and just enjoy bliss is already covered in Far Away. I do love the little flute flourishes in the instrumental towards the end. Not sure where I would place this in the tracklist. All in all a smooth track.

16. Keep Away, I don't understand at all why it isn't on the album. It is a stunning song and one of the best produced to me in the entire album. It sounds quite icy and honestly would fit in Dedicated quite well. It calls back to the underwater sound that Now I Don't Hate California After All has, which is also another song that I loved a lot.

surrender my heart, talking to yourself, bends, shooting star, go find yourself or whatever and the 3 bonus tracks are excellent

the rest is average :swan:

If the bonus tracks are that good imagine Side B in a year. :jonny5:

the benefit of all the broken hearts...

is a little bit of life regrets

I won't bring that mess to you...

so she's saying that her regrets are a 'benefit' now,

since she knows what NOT to do in a new relationship?

Lmao wish it was the other way around and Midnights leaked 2 weeks in advance, but at least most will get to fully enjoy both separately now

I think this is a perfect grouping considering these are exactly my top 6 tracks :allears:  If the whole album was like them it would be her best

I enjoyed reading your thoughts on the songs! Definitely allowed more interpretation and it's fun to see other people's feelings on songs.

This album seems a bit all over the place for me but I think it's just bc of the tracklist and lack of "flow". Also the fact it just jumps back and forth between the 2 themes as you mentioned.

The ethereal songs are definitely my faves. Western Wind is still such a stunning song whewww I really want a Carly x Rostam album :WAP:

Thank you for reading, I am glad you enjoyed it!

One thing I really love about Carly is how much her songs can be discussed and interpreted in different ways by different listeners. I definitely agree on the ethereal songs being the best! A full Carly x Rostam album would snap.

This :clap3:

I lately started thinking that Bends is probably about her grandma that died during the pandemic, she sings it so softly, it hits even harder now..

Carly X Rostam album would be an absolute dream, throw Ariel in the mix. Hope she sees this potential
