To sum it up, he was a hard right militarist who denied / downplayed WWII Japanese war crimes.

Um, ok, I’m not gonna wish someone to get shot to death for that, but ok, work.

CNN is covering it live and has been since the news broke.  In fact, they’re airing the CNN International feed instead of the normal repeat broadcast of AC360.

Thanks!

I couldn’t find it in their YouTube channel but at least they don’t have a live feed so that’s probably why…. Unlike the other channels that do have live feed and were ignoring it.

Not wishing anything.  But like, ok, let’s say trump got shot.  Would you wish him well?

Seems like a lone wolf assassination, but why target a former PM?

Seriously tho, how bad is the security? How can someone shot him with a f**king SHOTGUN without being noticed?

How would a random shooting cause a war?

I read this as a sarcastic statement and found it very funny.  Thank you for the laugh...I needed it.  This world is rough.

I would. If history has taught us anything the political implications of an assassination to any person in power are way worse than the probable actions of politicians

But the difference between this and the Archduke Ferdinand assassination was that they were of different nationalities. This is more like the assassination attempt against Ronald Reagan.

But he is not in power so at least this has way smaller impact to the likes of Kennedy assassination.

This is crazy especially for Japan. Hopefully he fully recovers.

Yes!

Technically  Russia & Japan are still at war… since 1952 :gaycat6:

Wait.  Do declarations of war transfer after the original country dissolves?  So like Is Japan also at "war" with Kazakhstan and Ukraine?

We know now that the shooter was the same nationality, that comment was made before that

True, but simply the fact that he is a former president who's still active in his party means a lot. Mostly if the supposed 'assassin' would have not been American

I was responding to a comment asking how an assassination could start a war.  Not whether this event would actually start a war.

Great question!

Well, Russia legally inherited the status of the USSR when it got dissolved. Thats why they have the seat at the UN & why all the nuclear weapons in Ukraine got transferred to Russia.

Also, Russia controls the Japanese territory so that makes them the new invaders by definition.

I mean I know you’re hinting at WWI but I don’t know if that’s 100% true.  Though, I’m not sure how this will affect Japan! Regardless im not going to wish an evil man well.

i understand that you would argue that trump dying would make him a martyr - but if/when he dies you will surely not mourn him!

Well, obviously not. But I ain't celebrating either.

This so weird, what motivation would the shooter have to do this to a politician out of office? could it be personal?

Can’t say there’s many American politicians I would mourn. They’re pretty much all terrible, despicable people, all in it for themselves.

My condolences to anyone who would find this assassination upsetting though. The instability in Japan is going to be rough for a while, and it will probably be to the benefit of Abe’s far-right nationalist party for a while.

The news now says the shooter is a former Japan Self-Defense Force low rank officer, and he used a pistol not a shotgun.

Omg did they use a sawed off shotgun? That was a lot of smoke :biblio:

That is interesting.  Thanks for the information.  I can honestly say I have not thought about the transfer of status regarding international law following a dissolution.  It does not happen that much, but makes sense.  Both sides would not want to renegotiate every treaty again.

Maybe it was an extreme rightist who was mad that he wasn’t right wing enough.  Honestly seems more likely
