There's nothing R&B about 2010s Rihanna A lot of girls put her up there with Beyoncé in r&b and it always makes me go ????? (like is it bc theyre both black? ) Beyonce and Ariana are the only real r&b girls from the MPG crop tbh

Thinking Of You Posted June 22, 2022 Posted June 22, 2022 14 minutes ago, BeyIridescent said: She didn’t leave them behind. The music landscape changed. R&B artists as a whole suffered in the 2010’s. R&B including Pop infused R&B was no longer mainstream. What you are saying is correct but it is not the case here. It wasn't a priority of hers to focus on crossover appeal anymore, which she did during Sasha Fierce and 4. After the underperformance of 4, she said "screw it" and focused on music, subjects, and material that were culturally relevant to her and the Black community. She had no desire to appeal to that side anymore. So yes, she did leave them behind and rightfully so. She wanted to switch it up and wanted to be authentic to who she really was at that time.
BeyIridescent Posted June 22, 2022 Posted June 22, 2022 17 minutes ago, MingYouToo said: Exactly. One of the main reasons 4 flopped for her standards. She was doing r&b while Rihanna was doing eurodance and Katy was doing Max Martin while Gaga was giving RedOne left and right. Among her r&b peers like Ciara, Bey was the only one that really survived that wipe out of r&b artists. Rihanna has always been more pop than r&b (dare I say among the 2000s onwards MPG only Bey and Ariana have rlly been delving into their own r&b subgenres the most) I can recall artists like Neyo and Usher attempting more pop stuff but they alienated their core fan bases. Those two never recovered and they were huge!

I feel if you were expecting IASF type of pop… those days are long gone and gladly. Might be her best commercially, but most people see that as her worst album and she doesn’t even perform many songs from that album besides the big singles and even Single Ladies, IIWAB, and Sweet Dreams aren’t on her tour set lists anymore.
