This. She is my fave but again with this outdated mess per usual.

I like it. Keen to hear the rest.

It's weird with her. As a dancer who came with two back to back club jams (Goodies and 1, 2 Step), there's the natural expectation that she'll excel with uptempos.

In reality, most of her success after has been with mids and slow jams (Promise, Oh, Like A Boy, Ride, Body Party).

Her attempts at uptempos (which should, in theory, come very natural to her) are very hit and miss. For the few good ones like Level Up, she has this grating brand of "gym jams" (that you can instantly tell won't get played anywhere else) like Gimme Dat, Dose, I'm Out, Sweat...which all sit somewhere between dated and not radio friendly. Beauty Marks as an album was not it either. Nor Jackie. Nor Basic Instinct.

She then has the misfortunate of having a slew of slay songs that go totally unnoticed (for one reason or the other) like Turn it Up with Usher, Freak Me, Dance Like We're Making Love, One Woman Army, and almost all of that stellar self-titled album.

I hope she can get the right mix this time.

The buzz around the clip (she's trending right now) gives me hope that this will be the "back to basics" attempt that works. Sure, it's a little contrived (we know it's not what her current image gives), but it has potential to be her most relatable call-back to the Ci we were first introduced to.

Oh...

And I am hoping sis gets her roll-out on-point this time.

She's had a lot of time to process what went right with Beauty Marks (Level Up) and what went wrong (everything else).

These girls are steady pushing this "my own label" "managing self" thing, so in essence there's no more label or execs to blame.

Ideally she'll put her label in a joint venture with a bigger indie like BMG or Eone. I wanna see decent R&B playlisting, TikTok (I trust her on this), and streaming-smart collabs (I love her love for Missy, but it's time to start playing with the new buzzing girls and guys).

Like, I love that Dave Meyers did the upcoming video. But imma need that budget spread across things that will actually make the song "jump" on a chart or two.

Hate when she's making her voice all squeaky like that. It doesn't work.

But let's see the hook

One thing about Ciara is she hasn’t given up and she has continued to release music and albums despite the setbacks she has faced in the industry.

Sometimes that’s what makes someone an icon over time is just never giving up and persisting. There are many talented people who give up or fade away after an album or two but I’m glad Cici isn’t one of them as she deserves to be in the history books for what she’s done for RnB.

So excited for new music from her and this sounds great, her albums are always a mixed bag but you can always rely on a few songs and videos you’ll always come back to per era like Level Up, Thinkin Bout You, Dance Like We’re Making Love, Gimme Dat, Love Sex and Magic etc.
