Phew, I honestly thought it was just me because I've been reading some think pieces that keep claiming Angel is the superior series out of the two for some reason and I just... don't see how that's possible? I think I saw a user on Reddit say Buffy is the heart and Angel is the soul of the Buffyverse, but to me the latter so far has been really bland. I guess I'll pass on the rest of it.

A lot of Buffyverse fans think the show is more intellectual 😆 even tho it’s really not. Buffy explored just as many themes just through a coming of age lense. But a lot of fans think Angel is deep

Like I said earlier, Angel did have some fantastic episodes, but nothing that served the same excellence as The Body, The Gift, Hush, Normal Again, Passion, Becoming Part 2, The Wish, Conversations With Dead People or Once More, With Feeling.

People are obviously entitled to their own opinion but I just can’t imagine saying Angel is the superior show. You know, Angel’s a cute girl. Cute, next to gorgeous. You know, gorgeous is gonna devour cute. :gaynetcat4:

The Body? Normal Again? Angel could never!

Rewatching some clips from Buffy and this is one of the best scenes ever. It makes me cry:

I think certain people prefer shows about adult men, to young women.

Um no, I always cringe when I see fans naming gimmick episodes. Sure they were great, but they are all stand alone episodes.

Angel didn't need gimmick episodes, in fact I can only think of one and that's the puppet one, I think it's 3rd highest rated episode of the show. Its stand out episodes are episodes that actually moved story forward and impacted their lives (and seasons).

Other than that show was heavily serialized and I prefer it that way.

Buffy is like the album where you can also listen album tracks outside of the album, Angel is the album you listen front to back.

I'll never understand random hate Buffy stans have towards Angel, I LOVE both shows, both are in my top 5, but Angel is simply better show overall. Yes Buffy started it all, had impact and influence but Angel has better, deeper, darker story, better characters, better character development (WESLEY!), the way they reinvented show with S5 will go down in history books. There was so much left to it. I'll never get over it.

Having said that, I am rewatching Buffy now, at S5 now, and I noticed my opinion changed a lot from first 2 views:

- I really don't like Willow this time around

- Xander doesn't bother me as much as he did last time

- Anya is just a filler character, like I don't know why was I obsessed with her while watching show for the first time. I don't find her funny at all

- I love Giles and Buffy the most this time

Anyway, Buffy fans please don't attack me :suburban:

How are The Body, The Gift, Hush, Normal Again, Passion, Becoming Part 2, The Wish, Conversations With Dead People or Once More, With Feeling gimmick / standalone episodes that didn’t push the story forward? Have you actually seen Buffy? :rip:

Look up definition of gimmick, most episodes you named fit into that definition (especially Hush and OMWT - 2 episodes stans name the most). Gimmick doesn't necessary mean bad, why are you so defensive?

I wouldn't name Becoming, Normal Again, The Wish among best episodes tho.

I’m not being defensive but I find what you just wrote incredibly weird. :rip:

Hush did move the storyline along as it was the episode where Riley and Buffy found out about each other’s true identities. In OMWF Buffy finally opened up about how she was feeling and let her friends know she felt like she was in heaven and I feel like that moment acted as a catalyst to some storylines that followed. The Body shouldn’t really need explaining? As I don’t see how Joyce dying didn’t impact the show or future storylines. In Becoming we lose Kendra which ultimately leads to Faith becoming the new slayer which has a big impact on the show. It’s also the episode where Buffy finally tells Joyce she’s the slayer and it’s the episode where she kills Angel, which again, I fail to see how something of that magnitude doesn’t impact storylines or seasons? - In Passion we lost our first major character and it was ultimately the episode that solidified in Buffy’s mind that she has to kill Angel.

Becoming Part 1 & 2 and The Wish are fan favourites so you not putting them amongst the best episodes is just a matter of opinion. I personally LOVE Normal Again as I love the philosophy of it and how it’s left open ended and up for the viewers interpretation. The fact you could say the entire series takes place inside of a girls head in a mental institute is great to me. :michael:

My English is not that good to explain exactly what I meant. I liked your explanations and you kind of have at point but at the same time I don't watch Hush to see Buffy and Riley finding out about each other last in few minutes. Hush is 99% gimmick and 1% what you said, same goes for OMWAF.

Anyway, I don't wanna bad mouth Buffy or have my opinion come across as negative. I just noted that majority episodes you named were stand alone episodes. And Angel not relying on stand alone episodes should not be a critique here. And I noticed that used against the show all the time.

But I wouldn’t say that the majority of them were? For me, a stand-alone episode should be an episode that you would show to a non-fan to try to get them into a show, as these episodes don’t normally contain heavy spoilers for overall arc / storylines and aren’t that confusing for somebody who’s never watched the show before to jump right into.

You could make arguments for episodes like Hush and Once More, With Feeling but are you seriously saying you’d show somebody who’s never watched Buffy before episodes like The Body, The Gift, Passion, Conversations With Dead People or Becoming Part 2? As those are some of the episodes I listed which got called ‘gimmick’ and ‘stand-alone’ whilst also saying what I said made you cringe. :rip:

We can all have different options, but none of the episodes above are episodes I’d ever show somebody who’s ‘new’ as they contain either big spoilers, storylines that changed the course of the show or both.

Anyway I continued watching Angel cause season 6 of Buffy is low key depressing me and it's getting a bit better! Wesley is still my least favorite character though. His presence is screaming discarded Buffy actor not interesting enough for the main series, what even is his purpose here

Also I'm gonna get crucified for this but Once More, with Feeling was so awful, omg? All of these actors were so off key it was grating for me to sit through the episode. Will never watch again, I don't understand how it's one of the most top rated episodes

What season of Angel are you on? And are you watching for the first time?

Wesley pretty much has the best character development of the whole universe.

I'm on episode 8 of season 3, first time watch. So far the only thing I like about him is his longer hair. :suburban: He'll always be the inferior Giles in my eyes

Saying you want to fast forward through something isn’t negative? Because I’m pretty sure that heavily implies you don’t want to watch it?

Every time I watch Buffy I have the same opinion about that one or even The Body. Sure it's sad her mother died but then again Joyce is hardly main character. There were at least 3 more shocking deaths in the universe.

I'm generally not the biggest fan of episodes that all fans list, and it's always same few episodes.
