But, for me, it's about separating art from the artist. Otherwise, a lot of series I like I would never watch again.

Completely agree. it’s the body of work as a whole. There are many problematic things about the people involved in the project but the show and the acting is what I love and I’ve learn to separate the characters from the people.

A day later and that scene is still haunting me, screw Joss Whedon and his desperation for shock value.

What shows would you recommend one watches after Buffy? Female-fronted, action-packed, story-driven shows? Already watched Charmed, now need something else. What are y'all's thoughts on Xena? Is it worth watching?

Have you seen Lost Girl? Definitely watch Xena!

Nope, haven't seen either but Xena will be on my watching list at some point.

Alias

Just started Alias recently, haven't gotten through the first episode fully yet because the site I am using buffers a lot with Alias for some reason but I already did Jennifer Garner's performance!

I think if they went back, kept the 4:3 for the first three seasons, and then remastered the 16:9 for season four to season seven I would be fine with that. The copies on Hulu are quite nice. The Disney+ edits are slightly different, but thankfully neither have the piss poor "remaster". *knocks on wood*

Well, who gives a f**k what he wanted, LOL! The 16:9 edits did not change the vibe of the show at all. If anything, I enjoyed the switch from 4:3 in 3x22 to 16:9 in 4x01. Plus, the filming quality changed at that point so it made sense. The EU release was right there for them to use and they just... did not care.

While flawed, the Charmed remaster was very well done, indeed. CBS took care ⏤ especially in the first season (when there was genuine effort to remaster it) ⏤ and it is a crying shame that Buffy was just thrown to the side for A.I. upscaling with horrible DNR and no colour corrections made. I, unfortunately, don't see Fox going the extra effort to remaster it properly. It's likely a waste of money in their eyes. And it's a shame, because the gentleman in the interview seemed passionate about doing the remaster. Hopefully, one day, he's able to.

I personally would want them to make the entire series 16:9 if it came to Blu ray, as the earlier seasons can easily make the transition to widescreen if it’s handled properly. The problem with the current remaster is that it was done on the cheap and it wasn’t done by a proper team of people. The Wire is a perfect example of a show that wasn’t made for widescreen but made the successful transition because the original creator was involved in the remastering process.

I’ve been watching Charmed for the first time recently and it’s so stunning on Blu ray. There’s obviously some SD shots (shots of the city) that don’t look great, but the rest of the scenes are so crisp and modern-looking. It’s still crazy to think that Charmed got a better remaster than Buffy, considering Buffy always seemed to garner more acclaim.

In regards to Buffy getting a new remaster, it seems less likely now because Disney technically own the rights which is why it’s on Disney Plus and I’m not sure if a third-party company could get in contact with them about doing a new remaster. The whole scenario just makes me feel sad as Charmed, Smallville and The X-Files are all on Blu ray and Buffy has just been left to rot.

@ithinkheknowsoutsold I would recommend Nikita (2010) as it’s probably the most underrated show I’ve ever watched. It’s one of the rare shows where every episode is great and nothing feels like filler. It’s basically a mini action-movie each week. I loved Alias for the first 3 seasons but the last 2 were disappointing. Nikita had a really strong run throughout and as it ran for 4 seasons and 73 episodes, it’s not a huge watch. Maggie Q is such a strong actress and there’s a particular episode in S2 that critics said she deserved an Emmy for and I agree.

Here’s what a reviewer said about the female characters:

Quote

The women of Nikita are at the heart of the series, a refreshing change from many spy dramas. They’re allowed to be flawed — to be cruel, violent, angry, manipulative, damaged — while also being characters worth rooting for — to be kind, merciful, loving, warm. They are allowed to fall and get back up. They are allowed to be heroes and villains. They are allowed to be human.

Now come and worship Maggie Q with me.

The show was never intended to be shown in widescreen and Joss actually hated the EU releases, but starting with S2 the show was shot in widescreen, but framed as 4:3 for release. You can tell from the current remaster as we’ve gained additional frames that weren’t there in the original release. The problem wasn’t them changing the show from 4:3 to 16:9, it was the fact a real person didn’t actually do the remaster or perform any aftercare such as applying filters and there was a weird use of DNR resorting in a wax-like look. It was heavily speculated that an AI of some sort was used to do the remaster because every frame always seems to zoom in on a persons face, like it was scripted to do so. I’ve seen side by side comparisons of the EU release with the remaster and they zoomed in on the remaster, which wasn’t necessary as the EU release already showed what was available in widescreen.

Examples:

There’s no way a real person was in charge of this, because why would you zoom in so drastically, when as shown by the parts of the scene covered in red, it wasn’t necessary? It just always seems to try to zoom in on any character shown in the frame, which is really weird.

The Charmed remaster has shown that Buffy could look stunning on Blu-ray, as they both aired on the same network during the same time period, the difference being is that the Charmed remaster was handled with care and it wasn’t done on the cheap.

I can’t believe that the same team behind the beautiful The X-Files remaster were originally going to do the Buffy one. I have no idea what possessed Fox to take Buffy away from them. To think, in another reality we have a stunning HD remaster of Buffy.

Yes, I know. I'd still think the option to switch from 4:3 to widescreen would be sweet. Hush, or especially Restless in 4k widescreen would be magical!

I don't know... something about the first three seasons being in 4:3 feels right for me. Watching it that way on Hulu and then the switch to 16:9 in season four is... whew!!!!!

It's like it could very well fit thematically too :D the transition from "sweet" old tiny high school that we spent our time establishing for three years, to a big campus - a whole new huge scary world of unknown territory lol

Somebody asked what to watch after finishing Buffy and for recommendations on something similar. Here are my suggestions:

Tru Calling (haven’t watched it in forever, so I’m not sure if it’s aged well, but I remember LOVING it. Plus, it stars Eliza Dushku.)

Veronica Mars (I loved this series when it originally aired. It’s great. I didn’t watch the reboot though. I heard it’s trash.)

Dollhouse (another good series, but it was canceled and rushed and mishandled by Fox. Still, I recommend it. Plus, it features Eliza Dushku).

And if you haven’t already, then Angel, duh.

Dollhouse is SUCH a tragic story! FOX really pulled out all the stops to **** this show up. It had such a good concept (it seemed very much inspired by the book Duplicates) with all its themes and ideas that could have made for such a riveting and profound series. What a shame...

I would like to add to the list:

Firefly (and when that's finished the movie Serenity) - also by Joss Whedon - and also mishandled by FOX - but it was a great show (with a good movie) for the little while it lasted

Wynonna Earp - the creator shopped her idea around as a "Buffy in Western" type of story until it got picked up by SyFy. It's fun, super campy, but unfortunately, i haven't finished it yet... so not sure if it's ACTUALLY any good, but so far it's a charming little show and the actors all seem to have lots of fun with the material they're given (and I heard it will have a movie on Tubi soon).

Orphan Black - I feel like this is another one that Buffy fans would enjoy. A very, very strong first season! After that it kinda veers into meh-territory for me, but it was still a good show overall.

X-Files - I mean, duh. But leave out the movies and the newer seasons plz

I never watched The Nevers (the Joss Whedon HBO show), but it stars Laura Donnelly and I luv ha! So that's a show that's on my "soon to watch" list and could be Buffy-ish. Anyone seen it?

Veronica Mars was such a hard watch for me, ugh.

I felt like the writing was a bit shallow and in every episode I saw myself creating a better script for the show in my head.

There would be a fight scene and I would think "Why are you not using that thing as an argument? Why are you not saying anything about this and that?".

The show could've been so much better. I felt like the writers didn't read each others script. Never felt that way about Buffy.

Was Buffy that popular during it's original airing in the US?

Yes!

On another note and repeated yet tired complaint, I just cannot for the life of me ever watch the dvds again because of the menus :biblionny: they were created by the Devil himself, I wanna throw the remote at the tv every time tbh.

There’s also more than this, but I just used the actors who had notable roles in Whedonverse projects.

It’s a shame that Sarah never made a cameo. I remember my heart skipping a beat when I saw this.

WTF?!!

I'm currently at the end of Angel season 2 and honestly am just contemplating giving up on trying to finish the show. I feel like the first few episodes of season one when the premise was still interesting and then the Darla arc of the second were the only times I actively enjoyed watching the show so far. Does it get any better?

Although Angel did have some fantastic storylines and episodes, it never gripped me the way Buffy did. I constantly get the urge to rewatch Buffy and I never feel that way about Angel. It actually took me ages to watch it all the way through and I originally just used to watch the crossover episodes to see my baby girl Faith.

I remember enjoying the first three seasons but finding the last two a struggle to sit through. There’s a character who comes into the show during the fourth season and I can’t stand them. :rip:

The start of Angel is horrible, and most people can’t get through the first 2 seasons. Darla & Drusilla had to come in and save it🤭

but yeah S3 is when the writing peaks and the ensemble cast starts to really work. But S4 is hated because of what they do to Cordelia. The last season is good, campy fun like Buffy. But overall Angel isn’t really as good. It’s just like Buffy for adults, but it’s kinda boring.

Phew, I honestly thought it was just me because I've been reading some think pieces that keep claiming Angel is the superior series out of the two for some reason and I just... don't see how that's possible? I think I saw a user on Reddit say Buffy is the heart and Angel is the soul of the Buffyverse, but to me the latter so far has been really bland. I guess I'll pass on the rest of it.
