Buffy the Vampire Slayer + Angel (aka Buffyverse)

I’m trying to avoid spoilers but I just wanted to say that I finished S3 last night and this show is exceeding all of my expectations. I’m a big fan of the genre, but I always pre-judged Buffy because of the campy show name and I thought it was going to be more like Charmed. I mean no offence to any Charmed fans by the way, that show was always just a bit too slapstick for me and I struggled to watch it.

My friend has pre-warned me that S4 had some transitional issues when the show moves to college but that it quickly rebounds again. I’m excited to watch more.

Could a 7-12 episode season 8 happen with the right script? Director? & writers?

I recall Sarah said she would only do it if the script was good.

Make sure you watch Angel at the same time as S4. A few other members said it was hard to get into (and I did to because I prefer Buffy the character so it's really a psychological hurdle), but if you're openminded and get over the hurdle, it's worth it. The first two to three seasons are really good. It does go downhill though (and so does BtVS).

As for the Charmed comparison, shows like Charmed, Smallville, Roswell, Supernatural, Smallville, Vampire Diaries, etc. are just all low quality copies of BtVS.

i've tried watching angel for years but something about that show just doesn't mix with me. i've seen the necessary crossover/cameo eps but thats about it.

OMFG SAME! Something about Angel felt so off to me.

like i can never really explain it but yeah i just didnt vibe with it and i've tried MANY times but just cant get into it. its something about the tone and the writing and characterization of everyone and everything my eyes just glaze over and i immediately lose interest lol

yeah it went into a weird autopilot after that ep where the plot only really moved forward in a lazy and sloppy way until the finale where it feels like they rushed through a lot of stuff idk. but yeah thats one of the only episodes that season that felt like classic buffy

Angel is definitely a chore to get through, literally had to restart season 1 like 5 times before I finished it but Cordelia has my heart so I stayed for her. When I was a kid, I'd always change the channel when it came on. :dies:

Season 4 especially, though fun, was torture. Also love Fred + Harmony, and there's some cute episodes here and there.

The writing in Angel is terrible, that's the main issue for me. Seasons 1-2 had terrible storylines with the exception of the crossover episodes and Season 4 was the only season when they kinda had their own identity.

They messed up big time in Season 5 with Angel managing W&H. In my opinion, things would've been very different had they given Angel a better storyline and honestly, we needed more Faith, having their very own vampire slayer would've made things x1000 better.

Yeah, those were great episodes, to be honest. I mean, Angel did have some really good episodes but they're kinda here and there

I disagree. I find the first 2 seasons (and maybe even the 3rd season too) of Angel more consistent and cohesive than most seasons of BtVS other than 3. I thought pretty much every season of BtVS was all over the place. The show finally found it's footing in the middle of season 2 and really peaked in season 3 with strong episodes here and there in seasons 4 and 5. Angel, on the other hand, was very consistent from the beginning until the weird Cordelia story arc. Angel became a chore to watch by season 4 and season 5 was just awful.

I think the issue most BtVs stans have with Angel (including me in the beginning) is the psychological hurdle of just getting into a new show and not having the title character. Angel isn't the best character and David Boreanaz isn't that great of an actor so it was hard to be pulled in. You had to really try... but that's also applicable to BtVS. The first season isn't very good and season 2 doesn't begin that strongly.

She always says she's too old to play Buffy when asked. I don't know where you recall that from.

I finished S5 last night and I am CRUSHED! What a fantastic piece of television The Gift was. :clap3:

I’m also slightly ashamed that it’s taken me this long to give Buffy a chance, but I’ve been consistently blown away. It’s also nice seeing so many actors that have been in Supernatural as I enjoyed Amber Benson in Supernatural and wish we got to see more from her character but I’m absolutely in love with Tara.

This scene was so beautiful!

I can’t believe I only have 2 seasons left but I will definitely be rewatching. I’ve had such a great time with Buffy, even through the trauma and heartache. :rip:

I finished S7 last night and I don't think I can watch another show in the same way again.

What an absolute master class in how to write television.

The producers were absolutely rancid for finally putting Amber Benson in the opening credits for that episode. :rip:

It was done on purpose; [redacted male producer] wanted to kill off a series regular, so putting her in the opening made it happen. And then he did it AGAIN in the series finale.

After reading into it, I’ve seen some people claim that Amber wasn’t in the credits as apparently when you are, you have to be available for every episode and I think she wanted the freedom to be able to take other projects. I’m not entirely sure though as I’ve seen conflicting statements regarding this.

I have never heard that; per [redacted], he'd always wanted to off a series regular and since the plan was to always kill-off Tara, it's why Amber Benson got the one-episode starring billing.

That’s why she was included in the opening credits for Seeing Red, but she should have been in the credits since midway through S4, especially considering that Seth Green was and Amber actually starred in more episodes overall.

There’s conflicting statements online as some people are saying it’s because she didn’t want to sign a contract, which granted her more freedom to work on other projects but then she did an interview and said she sucked at negotiations and standing up for herself.

Granted, she should have been in the opening, at least for the fifth season, but I also understand why she wasn't. It's the same reason why Emma Caulifield should have been in the opening during S4.

Not me already starting my rewatch!

It feels so strange going back to the first season as everybody is so cute and innocent and it’s insane knowing the hell they’ll all go through.

YEP! I'm finishing my vacation re-watch tonight. On the penultimate episode, then it is onto "Chosen". Whew.

I’m not sure what the general consensus was regarding the series finale, but I thought it was fantastic.

I’ve also seen some people online recommending that newcomers either skip the first season entirely or just watch Prophecy Girl and then head onto the second second and that’s honestly terrible advice. I know the first season isn’t necessarily the greatest representation of the show as a whole, but I still loved it and I honestly think some of the most memorable quotes are from that season.

Cordelia Chase: People who think their problems are so huge craze me, like this time I sort of ran over this girl on her bike. It was the most traumatizing event of my life, and she's trying to make it about her leg, like my pain meant nothing.

Willow: I think dummies are cute. You don't?

Buffy: Ughhh. They give me the wig, ever since I was little.

Willow: What happened?

Buffy: I saw a dummy. It gave me the wig. There really wasn't a story there.

Buffy: If the apocalypse comes, beep me.

Master: Did you really think you could best me here when you couldn't below?
Buffy: You have fruit punch mouth.

I feel like people liked the series finale, aside from the two deaths, especially the second one. I thought the series finale wrapped things up wonderfully; the fake-out of Buffy being down and out, Willow embracing the exact opposite of the darkness that had consumed her in the sixth season finale, etc. It was beautiful and a wonderful message.

The only episode I would ever recommend skipping during the first season is "I Robot, You Jane". That's it. Yes, the first season wasn't the prettiest, but people tend to forget or don't acknowledge (a.k.a. non-fans) that the series was a mid-season replacement on a brand-new television network. So, in that retrospect, it was a brilliant first season. I usually tell everyone to stick with the first season and half of the second before making a decision.

I agree! Although I was sad that…

Spoiler

Anya died, it was incredibly realistic how it happened and I actually found myself having to rewind to do a double-take as I couldn’t believe I witnessed her being sliced in half. Such a brutal way to go.

Although I wouldn’t say that episode is a standout by any means, I still personally wouldn’t skip it as when I watch a show, I like to watch every episode and I always find something to enjoy. For example, I audibly cackled when Buffy was like “Follow Dave? What, in dark glasses and a trench coat?” And then it cuts to:

I just love silly humour like that. :rip:

Oh, I completely agree, but to have a finale with no deaths was unrealistic. Kind of wish there had been more, honestly.

The first season had some choice fashions, but they were all very of the times, and I love it. Even the editing snafu during the second season premiere.
