sunbathinganimal Posted June 7, 2023 Posted June 7, 2023 I have very mixed thoughts on that finale though
fridayteenage Posted June 7, 2023 Posted June 7, 2023 I loved it as an ending. The resulting fallout in the comic book sequel seasons is kinda iffy tho

None of the characters even acknowledged her death aside from Xander (and I hated that 'That's my girl' line too ) Speaking of which the whole final scene just felt off to me idk, the jokes were some of the most forced and awkward in the entire series imo I did like Buffy's ending and the final shot of her smiling because she's not alone anymore. Glad there's not another season though cos tracking down other slayers sounds lame af I have other issues (Robin/Faith for example) but those are the main ones. I still overall liked the season but it was prob my least favourite finale which sucks cos it was the last one
sunbathinganimal Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 (edited) I think my ranking would go: Season 5 Season 3 Season 4 Season 2 Season 6 Season 7 Season 1 5 and 3 are really close for me but I think the S5 finale puts it on top 6 and 7 are close as well since they both do some things really well and some things really badly. The trio are by far my least favourite villains in the series but I love Dark Willow and I like the more grounded/adult themes Edited June 9, 2023 by sunbathinganimal
sunbathinganimal Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 Villian ranking Glory The Mayor Dark Willow Faith First Evil Angelus ——————— Spike (I loved him by the end but I kinda hated him as a villain) The Master Adam (should have been Professor Walsh ) The Trio Not sure if Caleb counts but he'd be near the bottom

Shocked Angelus is so low, though!

Venom Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 Just finished Into the Woods episode and I- Well, first let me just say that on this rewatch, I didn’t actually dislike Riley as much as I remember disliking him. Overall, he was a good boyfriend and okay Scooby. He has issues with how he wants to be viewed in a relationship and obviously for that reason him and Buffy aren’t compatible. That aside though, I didn’t mind him this time around and if he stuck around as an ex-turned-Scooby, at least he would have been more muscle for Buffy. His send off was weird though, and I get it was to write him off but it basically brought back my dislike for him again. But I’m willing to forgive it since it was mostly because he was written off the show. That being said….Xander. Aside from the first two seasons, I haven’t minded Xander during this rewatch but I think that’s about to change. His speech to Buffy about Riley was not cute and very invalidating of Buffy’s emotions. Other than that, I’m living for the Angel episodes right now and the whole Darla arc.
UnfairTop Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 I bet SMG and David Boreanaz were boning behind the scenes. I k ow it I just know it

If you need 5 different Deus ex Machinas for the story to work it’s a bad sign. I never found the ending satisfying, and it’s aging poorly. It’d be like if Harry Potter ended with Harry defeating Voldemort with a random talisman never before introduced, and then turning a bunch of Muggles into Wizards. Chosen as a whole feels like a creative dead end, which is why I think the comics are basically Buffy in name only, and why no reboot or spin-off has happened after Angel season 5 wrapped. There’s no where to take the characters and Sunnydale is destroyed. Buffy always worked best as an urban fantasy, but Joss wanted Chosen to be more of a fantasy epic like Lord of the Rings and it doesn’t work at all for a show like this. The solution to The First Evil being creating hundreds or even thousands of new slayers just takes something away from the premise of the show and the fact that the slayer line was already ****** after Prophecy Girl makes it kind of anti-climactic. We already have Buffy having an out of slaying through Faith talked about in S3, and her friends managed vampires without her while she was dead just fine. Creating a bunch of slayers just makes no sense thematically, and basically makes the world impossible to write afterwards with all the moving pieces. I prefer the message in Amends, that fighting is hard and it’s everyday to the message of Chosen which basically says Buffy can just do some spell and get out of Slayer duties. Chosen needed more personal stakes. Season one’s finale had Buffy’s fated death, season two’s had Angel’s soul, season three had Buffy v. Faith, season four had the Scooby’s coming back together as friends, season five had Dawn (and the universe) in peril, and season six had Dark Willow. Season seven just had no comparable stakes.

Godly Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 Conceptually and on a thematic level I find the finale, especially the very last scene, to be a perfect bookend for the series. Buffy breaking the wheel and looking over the vast landscape, as reality hits her and she can get a taste of freedom for the first time in forever, knowing she's no longer tied to an unfair destiny thrust upon her when she was a child. Her smile at the end perfectly conveys this and it just works, it's earned. The plot machinations to get there are super messy - but that's S7 for you - and I wouldn't put the episode as a whole up there with the top Whedon scripts of the show, but still it's super coherent with the original mission statement of the show IMO. For example, "The Gift" is a flawless episode that unlike "Chosen" is perfectly executed from biginning to end, and yet I find the note S7 ends on to be a better fit to the show's identity than what ending with S5 would've been.
KanMap Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 Just tried the first episode. It’s a bit… slow? But obviously this show is iconic for a reason so I’m gonna give it a few more episodes. 🤘

I personally love season 1 though.
StarsAllAligned Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 I’ve never disliked Riley honestly, he had his issues definitely but they all did at times. I like him and I like Dawn in season 7. Both are over hated imo.

There’s no reason a finale to a show called Buffy The Vampire Slayer should be so humorless. The Gift ending with “she saved the world a lot” will always feel more Buffy to me than Buffy smiling in front of a school bus in the desert. I would’ve preferred the show ending with Buffy staking a vamp and then running off to chat with her friends or something.
fridayteenage Posted June 18, 2023 Posted June 18, 2023 BUFFY I'm having a wicked shoe craving. XANDER Aren't you on the patch? WILLOW Those never work. GILES Here I am, invisible to the eye... XANDER See, I need a new look. It's this whole eye patch thing. BUFFY Oh, you could go with full black secret agent look. WILLOW Or the puffy shirt, pirate slash— GILES The earth is definitely doomed. i wouldn't say humorless. and it's not like The Gift was a laugh riot in comparison.
