The joke is in poor taste regardless of whether it’s private. They paid to have this made and display it for their friends. They wanted people to see it. And given that there were confirmed celebrities at this party, what if one of the attendees had known Amy personally? It was a stupid, tasteless thing to do, and Neil is right to apologize.
