I don't know what your habits are or the circles you're around and I don't want to assume anything.

But if they're still free in May it wouldn't hurt to have both shots prior to Pride season.

If Pride is relatively smooth sailing and numbers don't shoot up again, then we're in the clear globally.

I've been celibate for quite a while and just recently became sexually active again, but only with one person currently.  However, I do plan to travel to bigger cities this summer, possibly attend events, and will probably start having more sex with other people.

I'm going to look into getting the vaccine, but if I can't I feel a little better knowing cases have dwindled to almost nothing.

Did you by chance get it Espresso?  If so, were there any side effects?  Also, does this vaccine make you immune from getting Mpox or does it just lessen the effects if you do?

Immunity is not provided by Jynneos and compared to many other vaccines, there’s a smaller amount research on it, especially say, in comparison towards the similar smallpox. The research that does exist indicates it’s very effective however. On the rare chance ACAM is offered to you as your only option (highly unlikely) imho it’s not worth the trouble, both in how it’s administered and the skin maintenance in the interim between shots. Get both shots from Jynneos only.

I got both my first and second dose. I wanted both to be full doses but it was (and likely will be if you get them) the first being a full dose and the second (after Biden’s directive for limited supply) being a smaller dose. To increase effectiveness, the second was given subcutaneously (on angle for higher level of skin) whereas the first  was given intradermally. If you’re given a choice (unlikely) get both shots intradermally. I had a day-long migraine with no skin reaction after the first vaccine and a blown-up, itchy red arm after the second shot for almost two weeks that I covered with a large bandage for both shots so the skin bubbles (that are a reaction that are supposed to happen - sign it’s working) were protected. Given the  approx. 30 days between the two shots if I were you I’d get both in April.

And as we approach pride season, this is picking up again, including with those that have been vaccinated, exactly as I predicted :coffee2:

When's the booster shot CDC? :celestial5:

Aren't they jumping the gun? :celestial5:

It seems like governments in Asia are not prioritizing this? I would like to get mine.

Is there a booster with this like with COVID? I got both shots last year but I saw the article about it affecting even those who've been vaccinated.

China Mpox Cases Surge 400% in one month as Virus Spreads to More Parts of Country

Quote

China’s confirmed cases of Mpox rose nearly five-fold in July to a new high as government efforts to contain the infectious disease’s spread ramp up.

Last month’s case count was 491, versus 106 in June, according to a statement from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Every patient was male and 96% of them had sexual activity with another man, the CDC said. There were no severe cases or deaths from mpox, the virus known as monkeypox until recently.

Though no longer a global health emergency after the World Health Organization lowered the global alert level for mpox in May, the WHO cautioned that more needed to be done to eradicate the sometimes-deadly virus.

If you didn't manage to get a shot last year, now would probably be a good time while demand is not very high. Better safe than sorry

Literally most of my family got hits new variant of COVID and it was pretty bad, they spent a whole week bed bound.

I’m fairly certain I got it too but nowhere near as bad, maybe a runny nose but that was it.

I posted my Covid updates here by mistake so I’m moving them to that thread.

I’m sorry to hear about your family though. Glad they’ve recovered, hoping for no rebound or Long Covid.

Mpox circulated for five years before global explosion in 2022, research finds

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/nov/02/mpox-monkeypox-circulated-global-explosion-in-2022

Before 2020, most human mpox infections were blamed on contact with rodents that can carry the virus in countries where the disease is endemic. On the rare occasions that people passed the infection on, those affected were typically family members living under the same roof.

The global mpox outbreak was different, however. Writing in the journal Science, O’Toole and her colleagues describe how viruses collected from patients in 2022 carried far more mutations than expected. The mpox virus is expected to pick up one mutation every three years, but compared with virus collected in Nigeria in 2018, mpox from patients in 2022 had a whopping 42 mutations.

A closer look revealed that the majority of mutations were caused by skirmishes with the human immune system, in particular an antiviral enzyme called apobec3. The finding means that the human immune system is driving the evolution of the virus, marking the switch to its sustained spread in humans. Based on the rate of mutations, the scientists estimate that mpox has been circulating in humans since at least 2016.

The global mpox outbreak was driven by a lineage called B.1, and cases have been in decline following public health advice and vaccination programs largely aimed at men who have sex with men, who accounted for the vast majority of cases. But the researchers point out that countries such as the UK, the US, Portugal, India and Thailand, continue to report other lineages of the virus, almost all of which trace back to Nigeria, suggesting that the human epidemic that sparked the 2022 outbreak continues “unabated”.

I will finally get the Jynneos vaccine (1st dose) next month, and gosh, two doses will cost me at least US$700.  Another clinic was offering it at >US$800.

Count your lucky stars if you managed to get them for free.

@Chemist

Numbers going back up in the States much earlier than last year analyzed. Also new discussion of mpox vaccine boosters.

Mpox: Hello, it's me again. I was was wondering if after all these years you'd like to meet. To go over the all the pain and suffering again. They say that time's supposed to heal ya, but I will make sure that there isn't much healing this time round.

Glad I got the mpox vaccine a few months back, but damn, it was expensive AF.
