Mpox (Monkeypox) thread - 1st case outside Africa

We report 528 infections diagnosed between April 27 and June 24, 2022, at 43 sites in 16 countries. Overall, 98% of the persons with infection were gay or bisexual men, 75% were White, and 41% had human immunodeficiency virus infection; the median age was 38 years....

Phylogenetic analyses suggest that the virus has circulated undetected for some time outside areas where it has been endemic, possibly masquerading as other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).17 The current international case definitions may not be adequate to reflect the changing spectrum of clinical presentations, allow early identification, clarify transmission routes, and inform international public health policies and clinical trials. The case series we report here may help to inform the response.

Tried asking my sexual health clinic about the vaccine and they just said that my country doesn’t have enough doses so I basically cannot get it..

Disappointed with the Emirati authorities, because they actually did a good job with COVID. Maybe the MSM community in the UAE are avoiding getting tested?

In case y'all want nightmare fuel...and an idea of what it may look like around the groin areas and more here's a PDF. It looks pretty gnarly.

View at your own risk. Starting on page 45. (spoiler is just a link that leads to said pdf)

Can it spread through simple contact like touching someone’s elbow at a nightclub? :katie:

It could be spread through skin-to-skin contact with an infected person. Also from clothing if it was on an infected person. Bars and clubs aren't the safest place since that tends to be places where you could come in close contact with an infected person who may not be showing symptoms yet.

I’m worried now since I’ll be in Vegas next weekend :mazen:

Only 48 cases so far in BC

Most gay men I know here are already vaccinated, they seem to have done a great job with the vaccines shockingly. Maybe we will avoid a huge spike like Montreal and Toronto had.

Oh God :mazen: So much for it being "mild", that is horrifying. Some of those photos look like the skin burst and split in half, the anal ones especially :mazen: There is no way some of those don't leave a scar. But I'm glad I saw this because I am fully committed to my celibate monk era now. I am even reconsidering going to this busy pride party I had planned to go to. Nothing seems worth what those photos show.

But really they need to be broadcasting these images. Imagine if when you log onto Grindr it shows you this along with a link of where to book your vaccination. It would be so much more effective, fear is a powerful tactic. Right now I feel as if most gay men think it's nothing.

I get not wanting to create a new stigma, but the data shows that those who have the highest risk are men who regularly have multiple sexual partners in a short period of time.

if we don't speak directly to the people who have the highest risk and suggest that they change their behavior at least in the short term, it feels like we're basically letting more people get sick to avoid a stigma.

It's extremely hard to talk about this. Because I noticed online when this is mentioned, all the replies will say it's homophobic to say that the people most at risk are non-monogamous gay men. When an outbreak happens, there's always one group or several that will be most at risk. But having this about gay men being so politicized is making things worse. As it reminds me of Covid.

It’s a double-edge sword. Keep in mind that school is out. We have no idea what the numbers will be when people get back into classrooms and dorms. You don’t want people thinking it’s simply a gay disease and not get tested or treated, because that is what will happen. A woman just contracted it.

I saw a piece on this exact discussion in The Atlantic.

My problem with this narrative is this notion that the data point that mostly sexually active gay men are being affected is being suppressed or not 'properly emphasized' to avoid accusations of bigotry.

What urban-dwelling, currently sexually active gay men are not currently aware of monkeypox and what difference in the current delivery of the message is going to make any difference in more getting vaccinated?

@teresaguidice is dead on. It's a matter of choice. If it's not an issue of the vaccines running out when folks are trying to get them it's simply ignorance.

I mean I live here and don’t know anyone who has it but just avoid going to pirhanna as it’s our only gay dance club and just sit and chill at the bars

Allegedly Vegas is going to get vaccines in the next few weeks but I don’t believe it
