Something I'm discovering is how easy it is to be consumed by a deadline.

ย

What is the purpose of writing a song trying to finish it for a deadline if you're not enjoying yourself?

ย

It is great to have a finished product at the end of the day and completing something can feel satisfying, it can make you feel accomplished at the end of it all which is great.

ย

But, on the flipside, is opening your eyes when you reach the end of the rollercoaster ride worth it if you kept your eyes shut during it and missed the entire experience?

ย

I think I'm starting to realise that enjoying the songwriting process means more to me than finishing the song. I think I find enjoying the journey a lot more satisfying than completing something. For me completing something if I am not enjoying it on my way there is not as worth it to me.

ย

This might be an eye-opening revelation that could speak to someone else. :heart2:

Quite a few of the entries last round people openly said were rushed or incomplete, and I think thatโ€™s fine. I donโ€™t try to review submissions as if they are absolutely final, though there are definitely some submissions that you receive and you read it and think โ€œthere isnโ€™t anything Iโ€™d change about this, this seems like a totally finished productโ€ but in my reviews I usually try to add a piece of advice in regards to editing or what I think the next step could look like for this song, because the reality is youโ€™re given a limited time frame, in which you personally have a limited amount of free time, and then a limited amount of energy to write, so itโ€™s not as if everything we are reading needs to be viewed as the end all be all, but rather a first draft for which we are giving feedback. Plus, of course, whenย isย something finished? You can edit a song forever, itโ€™s only up to you when it is done. And even if you end up scrapping a song, youโ€™ve still gained something from that experience. I heard a quote recently that I quite agree with - โ€œno word written is a word wastedโ€. But I definitely agree with what you are saying here; write what you love and write what you enjoy, and write for fun.ย

Well you have picked David Archuleta, right? So the idea is that we want you to write a song imagining that you are in a studio session with David Archuleta; you are writing a song for himย and with him, and it can either be inspired by his personal life or by his music and style as a whole.ย

Put me down for Carrie Underwood. Idk if Iโ€™ll be done in time but I have a rough idea

Thank you for sharing this insightful perpsective. That's actually a really good point! I think it can be easy to participate in this game and write a song and feel like it has to be "completed to 100%", like the song has to be in its final form to be submitted. But now I realise I could actually just submit a song with one of the verses half-finished and it is fine. At the end of the day you still gain something from it and there's nothing wrong with what you have right now, whether it is "finished" or not. Even if you only have a concept and no lyrics, that's still fantastic! I'd rather allow myself to have the opportunity to learn and grow rather than have the expectation of doing everything "perfectly" which is an illusion tbh. I think people can get too caught up in trying to match literal perfection which is such an unfair standard to set yourself to :jonnycat:

If you are struggling with Mr. David Archuleta, you can always switch to somebody else who would be easier.ย

I mean yes, exactly. Especially in this game. As it is, Golden Hit is really a learning experience. I think itโ€™s natural to feel some pressure, but the stakes are really not that high in this game, and it should be more about what you are going to get out of this in the long term as opposed to any immediate praise. Weโ€™re all just here to write, encourage each other and give feedback, at the end of the day.ย

Well what do you feel inspired to write about, is there anything going on in your personal life or anything around you that you can apply to your song? Just because itโ€™s a challenge where you are envisioning yourself writing with somebody else doesnโ€™t mean you canโ€™t still make the challenge personal. You could always choose an artist who you relate to on a personal level and write a song about how you relate to them. Honestly, there are very many options that you can go for with this challenge. Just give it some thought and see which you feel is the best idea. I would recommend settling on an idea first before you start writing, otherwise it might feel like you are just throwing things at the wall hoping for something to stick. Work out a path forward and then start making your way through it.ย :bird:

Ooh, I love this! It also makes even more sense when you consider that there are no eliminations because if you choose to participate in every round, you're basically in it for the long haul. The risk of being eliminated if your song doesn't rank at a specific place is not there so it is different.

ย

It can be easy to deceive yourself to place so much pressure on yourself to "perform well" to receive a good week's worth of feedback and results, like short-term gratification. When it really is about evolution.

ย

It's natural to want to do well each week and it's okay to be competitive since it is a game, but there's also no need to place any unnecessary pressure, stress or expectation on yourself.

I think thatโ€™s a great idea, using those type of things as inspiration is wonderful and can actually be really healing. I hope that you can get past this block and experience that. I definitely think that you can do it, it might just be a matter of time. Maybe right now is not the moment, but you can give it some more thought and of course try again. Youโ€™ve got this. :heart:ย

For me songwriting can be a great personal outlet. On the other hand, another approach could be to write songs that are less personal and not as close to reality.

ย

For me writing a song about a fantasy world where water is honey felt so freeing for me and helped me to discover a place that did not have anything to do with any personal issues I may be dealing with right now.

ย

Sometimes I don't want things that are causing me distress to be in other things that I do. For example, dealing with OCD in my daily life is already debilitating - I don't want to write a song about it or read a book about it. Whereas other times watching a TV show or reading a book and one of the characters has anxiety can help me. It depends.

ย

My song became like my own "paradise" or playground where I can just create in - it's like painting.

ย

Songs that you write don't have to be personal unless you want them to be.

ย

Much love and peace to you.:hug:

SCHEDULE ANNOUNCEMENT

ย

This week, the round 2 results show will be happening on Sunday as opposed to Saturday. I personally will be busy on Saturday so won't be able to be present for them if we carry them out on Saturday, and in general it may be better to have more breathing space between the challenge deadline and the results show as to not put as much strain on the judges having to review and score 30+ entries in only 2 days. We obviously don't want to rush those things but it can also be hard to juggle with other responsibilities as it is quite time consuming due to the engagement with the game which is higher than we initially expected (but something we are thankful for!). The good thing about this: everything else will remain the same. The deadline for round 2 will still be Thursday 11:59PM EDT and round 3 will still be posted as planned on Saturday, there will just be a little overlap with the rounds as results for round 2 won't happen until Sunday (right now we are expecting this to be about 6-7PM EDT). Since I'm busy on Saturday you'll be getting my full reviews on Friday morning, so this should help make up for it; I'll also be preparing picture hints again as people seemed to enjoy when I did it for round 1.

ย

Right now, we are just trialling this out for the current week, but if it is beneficial then we may decide to stick to this schedule moving forward.

ย

Thank you for being understanding!
