Kinda screaming at so many reading β€œyourΒ heritage, your race, your ethnicity, your ancestryβ€œ and β€œyourΒ nationality and the country that you are fromβ€œΒ and getting small town vibes from that :deadbanana4:

Β

Maybe we’ll have to give it its own challenge in the future to get all these small

town songs outΒ :dies:

You think us white Americans have ANYTHING to go off of with any of that? Our heritage, race, ethnicity and country is all about stealing peoples lands and people from their land and appropriating the parts of their culture we think is cool and villainizing their originators ???? it's that or valuing guns over children and not having the palette for anything spicier than Sprite.

I was actually gonna do the Cultural challenge at first, specifically the nationality / country you are from part. You can kinda see that in the chorus lol. But I ended up getting telling the same idea through the History angle instead

Β

Yeah tbh this is why I added the nationality part in as an alternative way to view the challenge, because I was concerned that it might end up getting no submissions at all otherwiseΒ :rip:Β but I was happy with the entries overall, I definitely got some beautiful songs in the vain of what I was hoping for and some others that might have been a little more off mark but were still fun to read! I figured there was always the likelihood that it’d be the least submitted to because the challenge itself is focusing mainly on minority groups, but I wanted to give them a place to write about and be inspired by that, and vocalise their own culture and their unique viewpoint / experience with it, if they wanted :heart:Β it was a great opportunity to do it as my Judge’s Choice also since obviously a lot of people would struggle with it as a main challenge, so it meant we could still give the challenge it’s opportunity in this way! That’s why I really love the Judge’s Choice round tbh, and it’s also fun to give players some choice too.Β

Not to be all biased based off performance, but I had the most fun writing for the Multimedia challenge, though Elemental and Pride challenges were fun as well!

Β

I will also be honest and say I didn't care much for the Studio Sessions and ATW10MVTVFTV challenges, the first because I never seem to do well when the prompt involves taking inspiration from other music acts (although I ended up liking how it turned out regardless), and the...other one is because it clashed so heavily against my usual writing style, and I don't think I delivered something all that great.

Β

Multimedia > Elemental > Pride > Studio Sessions > the other one

Β

Not sure where this finale is gonna place yet ??

Dead @ β€œthe other one” :deadbanana4:Β welp I figured it was always going to be one of the more initially off putting or ~harder~ ones, but the entries were acclaimed at least!

Β

Studio Sessions is one I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed either, as I usually don’t like trying to take inspiration from others like you said, although maybe it could have worked out okay depending on how I tried to execute it (I remember placing 1st in a challenge in PH7 where you had to reinterpret an already existing song, which I guess is similar?). Mostly that challenge was supposed to just offer some early round fun and be a little more lighthearted and open to interpretation than the later challenges.Β
Β

I’d say ATW, Queer Pride and the Judge’s Choice were the ones I anticipated the most personally :eddie:

Forgot to reply to this but it was so deserved :heart2:Β absolutely loved your entry and super happy to see you in the top 3 again!

Β

I can’t with the ties though :deadbanana4:Β lemme give you a score like ?.123456789 next round so that it’s impossible for you to tie. Although at this point now a sixth and final tie is almost too iconic to not kinda route for itΒ :dies:

I think small town vibes was the simplest and most effective way for most of us to write a song that was still genuinely personal to our lived experience and not just about our perspective of things happening outside of ourselves. β€œI lived this” writing is generally preferable to β€œI saw this” or β€œI think this” writing.

Β

IDK about the others, but I also suffered a bit given that I had already done a broad-ranging β€œtraumatized by the state of America” song two rounds earlier and I didn’t really feel a need to revisit or expand on that. Perhaps I should’ve. I could’ve delved into one of the many topics mentioned in End of the World’s bridge, but the muse didn’t really pull me there. :michael:

well, what’s been everybody’s favourite round?

I liked ATW and Pride the best, but that’s probably because I’m always writing wordy songs and/or about being gay anyways. :dies:
Β

I know that the elemental challenge is a staple of this game, but it’s never been a favorite of mine. Kinda feel it’s been done to death. The sessions challenge is another mainstay, but I don’t mind that because it’s so broad that you can always do something new with it.Β

Β

I would’ve liked the multimedia challenge if all of the elements hadn’t been required. Like β€œdo 3/5 requirements with a .1 bonus for doing more” would’ve sufficed. But then, I’m entirely opposed to any challenge that requires finding or writing to music. :michael:

Β

I was just glad not to have a collab round thrown at us. Hate them. That said, this could have beenΒ @JacksonΒ and me:

Y’all could have written about this! Just as the Historical girls could have written about some positive events in the past rather than wars, fires, doom and gloom. :tsk:Β

Hey, Hitmakers! This was such a fun round to judge... seeing your choices and interpretations of the unique challenges was very rewarding.

As we move into the final stages of the tournament, I just want to reiterate how much it means to us to have you all submitting every week.
If you are yet to submit and still plan on doing so, I will edit your review into this post once we receive the submission and tag you in the post afterwards.

If there is anything in your review that you do not wish to have public (lyric excerpts, references to your material etc.) I will remove it upon request.

8. @EpicSongFanΒ - β€œFrozen in Time”
Ooh, we have another short offering. I really enjoyed this piece. As I indicated in Euterpe’s review, shorter songs can be powerful when done right, and I think you have done just that with this one. I read your lyrics standalone before looking to your inspiration, and part of me wished there had been some kind of chorus or central refrain element to tie things together. After learning about the background of the song however and watching the excerpt you linked, I agreed it didn’t really need that. You captured the emotions quite well, even down to the cover artwork, which is as brilliant as ever. The first two verses are set up so well, and the lyric, β€œI can’t move on from this endless guilt / I’ve knocked down the house we’ve built,” was wonderful. It was simple but effective, and I can tell that care has been put into each of these lyrics. A stellar offering from you.

Thank you so much! :jonny5:

I actually thought about having a chorus to tie everything together, but I decided against it in the end because I felt like it'd be more impactful that way. Which I think paid off for this oneΒ :msmarvel:

Round 5: The Judge’s Choice Challenges

Β

Thank you everybody for another great round! I loved seeing all of your interpretations and inspirations this round. It's so sad to think that there is only one more round remainingΒ :chick3:... but who knows, maybe we'll be back sooner than later! As usual, thank you for being here and thank you for submitting. :heart2:

Β

@EpicSongFan - Frozen in TimeΒ

(Multimedia Challenge)

I really enjoyed the inspiration you took for this challenge; the emotion and the story were very clear from the cover, music video and the information that you provided. Something that I have to specifically give you props for is that you took on an anime which itself already has a musical element to it, and you avoided replicating that music itself, instead creating your own thing which still really encompassed the emotion and reflected the story desired well; since the character already sings about this in the show, it could have been easy for your song to end up being quite samey, but you’ve created something distinct which shows you’ve done a great job. For the song itself, it’s quite short, but it does portray the emotion of the story very well, and I felt that despite its shorter length it still showed off your inspiration and your lyricism well. I think you probably could have incorporated some more of the actual story elements into the lyrics which could have pushed things a little further, but focusing on the emotional aspect mainly was itself a strength and I think, overall, you’ve done a great job with this challenge.

Β

Thank you so much! :jonny5:

Honestly, it was a bit of a challenge as like you said, since it's an anime that already has a musical element attached to it. So, it was a fun to try writing without having it being the same. I thought about incorporating parts of the actual story elements but I wanted the song to have a "prequel" kinda feel, something that Mafuyu experienced before the storyline of the anime. I think that also helped differentiated between my song and the song from the animeΒ :msmarvel:

Damn, I did not expect a top 10 at all since I haven't cracked the Top 10 at all since the beginningΒ :jonny5:Β

Thank you so much and I'll try my best for the final round!Β :bird:Β Am not sure which challenge I'd like to take for now, but I feel like it'd be interesting either way.

Just want to ask regarding the Nothing Challenge though. Could we do the Nothing Challenge and use past challenges that we never really used? Like for example, I did the multimedia challenge but now I want to try out the Cultural or Historical Challenge. Or try out the earth element which isn't present in my song's imagery at all

We already did results tonight so we can’t I’m sorryΒ :chick3:Β at this point it’s probably better to focus on Round 6 instead anyway so as to not fall behind on that challenge, plus maybe you can rework whatever you have for Round 5 into something for Round 6? Or if you want to write something new for Round 6, then you could still share whatever you have for Round 5 if you want, cause I’d still like to read it

Oh wow I hadn’t even realised this was your first top 10, I thought that you already had been there before! Well, even more congratulations for it in that case! Very deserved :clap3:

Β

I think if you go for Nothing, then picking one of the challenges you didn’t do would be a fine way to go about it, no problem with that. Mainly it’s just about the song being distinct in theme to your other entries, and if you can achieve it in that way then feel free
