No other pop girl has achieved this success, why?

Thinking Of You

It has been twenty years since Ashanti’s debut, but yet no girl has been able to replicate her success in their first years. Why?

Her chart run was insane and it was all consecutive:
Always on Time” - #1 (2 weeks at #1)

“What’s Love?” - #2 (blocked by “Always on Time. First female artist in history to occupy the top two spots)

Spoiler

“Ain’t It Funny (Murder Remix)” - #1 (6 weeks at #1) :eli:

“Foolish” - #1 (10 weeks at #1. First female in history to occupy three spots in the top-ten at the same time after the Beatles)

Ashanti - #1 (Billboard 200. Biggest week for a female debut artist in history. 503K+ sold first week)

“Down 4 U” - #6

“Happy” - #8

“Baby” - #7

“Mesmerize” - #2

GRAMMY - Best R&B Album (Winner)

Chapter II - #1 (Billboard 200)

“Rock Wit U (Awww Baby)” - #2

”Rain On Me” - #7

”Into You” - #4

Baby peaked at #15 and barely made noise... so really the list stops at 5 hits in a row with almost half being features. Other pop girlies have made much more impressive starts

What?

”Baby” may have had a moderate top 20 peak on the Hot 100, however “Down 4 U” and “Happy” were still on the charts and “Mesmerise” had just entered and was climbing, fast. Also, this was just after scoring a 10 week #1 and all of this was in the same year.

Aside from that, “Baby” was her fourth consecutive top ten hit on both Urban and Rhythmic radio, with her own singles and excluding the features which had also all hit top ten.

:toofunny2:

She wasn’t the YE Female Artist of 2002 and the YE Hot 100 Artist of 2002 for nothing.

Maybe you all have some answers: @Devin @GoodGuyGoneGhetto@Armani?

You forgot to add “Into You” (Fabulous - 2003) which was also credited to her along with Tamia.

Tamia’s version was bigger on Urban radio but Ashanti’s was bigger on Pop and Rhythmic radio.

It isn’t that impressive yet no other girl has been able to recreate this much consecutive success in their first two years. She had a #1 and blocked herself from #1 before her debut single even dropped :skull: Her debut single was #1 for 10 weeks :dies:

Not these young’ns trying to diminish Ashanti’s success. She owned 2002-03! Too bad it all came to an end before her best single, “Only U,” even came out.

I remember when "Foolish" came on at a women's hair salon my aunt took me to, I started bopping and the hair lady clocked me and called me a maricón

Cause she was plastered on tons of collabs and features :michael: Ciara, Monica & Mariah (before her), Kesha, Gaga, Beyoncé, etc. all had a big run of hits at the start of their career, with way less collaborations. It's not THAT uncommon.

Katy Perry comes to mind and before her there was Mariah, Whitney etc.

But good for her! :clap3:

Tamia’s version

…is the superior version. Tamia’s voice is gold.

OT: Ashanti did great things and I’m glad she’s still out there performing and looking amazing while doing so. Her stats are great and should be celebrated.  :clap3:

None of those girls debuted with 503K+ first week for their debut album though so…:skull:

The features and collaborations excuse doesn’t work here.

An icon :clap3:

Wonder if JLo would do the right thing and RIAA-certifiy with her name like Babyface did Mariah for background vocals :gayriahcat1:

• Her first solo release was a 10 week #1.

• Her album debuted with 503K units in the first week.

• She was BB’s Female Artist/Overall Hot 100 Artist of 2002.

None of the aforementioned girls saw those stats. in their first year aside from Mariah Carey in 1991 and, to a lesser extent, Beyoncé.

Furthermore, collabs. are common and frequent within the R&B/Hip-Hop community and became even more commonplace as the 2000’s arrived. Beyoncé’s first two #1’s featured other artists; Ciara’s first three top ten hits all featured other artists.

Try again. :rip:

The girls trying to say that her success was due to collaborations when…

She literally only, frequently, collaborated with Ja Rule and other artists on the Murder Inc. roster, most of whom didn’t see half her success with their own work.

They’re truly trying it.

Even if you go back to the 80s, Paula Abdul started her career with four #1 singles from a debut album, setting a new record, and her debut album also went number one, and then she scored two more #1 singles from her second album too, which album also went to number one.

Wrong. Paula Abdul started off flopping.  They had to go back and change their strategy. I would know because the king of producers, Babyface, produced “Knocked Out” - her lead. Such a great track though.

That was never the question though. The question is why hasn’t any girl replicated this kind of success since Ashanti in their first years?

None of what I said is wrong. Yes Knocked out didn’t hit it right away but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with changing strategy and try an they got four #1 singles off her debut album.  That’s hardly “flopping”. But you said why haven’t any pop girls been able to do this type of success for their first eras and here you go.

The Way That You Love Me flopped too as the follow-up too. But they went back later and re-released it and added the rap.

I never said that. It’s very clear I meant since her debut. I said this: “It has been twenty years since Ashanti’s debut, but yet no girl has been able to replicate her success in their first years. Why?”
