The Ukrainian-Russian conflict has been going on since 2014; their family members and friends claim they came over to the US as refugees in 2016. The family/friends seem to be emphasizing that they're refugees since a crime of this kind usually results in the perpetrators being deported by to their home country.

They can't be refugees unless they sought political asylum, and I only know gay Ukrainians in America who have that official refugee status (before the invasion). They're probably just gopnik immigrants that chose the cesspool that is Florida to live in  but of course highlighting the fact that they're Ukrainian and conflating it with the refugee crisis to stoke xenophobia is what sensationalist media loves to do.

 

That being said, they deserve to be prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of the law. Animals
