In a world where Taylor is successful, anything is possible as it is one of the things that still doesn't make sense.

You sound mad.

OT: Taylor, Dua, Doja, Adele, Olivia, Billie, Ariana... are the current ones. Beyoncé needs to release, Rihanna is retired, Gaga is on and off and Katy is over. All time MPG is a long long long list tho, I agree with OP.

If we're really goin to have an extensive "MPG" list then it'll have to go beyond the acts that debuted in the mid 80s and have Aretha, Dionne, Barbra, Cher, Donna there to. It'll also have to have the newer acts like Billie (Dua and Doja being included in OP makes sense.)

Halsey and Selena (and Jlo by extension I guess) have never been main pop girls in whatever loose definitions of that term. Just somewhat successful and relevant acts that weren't complete bombs and had semi-successful longevity (I don't care for Selena's Instagram following it doesn't mean much) and pop music has had such acts throughout modern music history. If Paula and Cyndi aren't included, and I can see why some wouldn't include them, then Halsey and Selena shouldn't be either.

And Whitney definitely should be there too :deadbanana4:

Do I admire and envy her success? YES! Do I believe she is not that good? Still YES!

I agree about Halsey and Selena, but not for Jennifer. She was always a main pop girl as she's considered an Icon! Barbra, Cher and Aretha were all main pop girls as well. Cyndi and Paula? not so much. The one is a two hit wonder and the other one is unknown for her tracks overseas and only known for being judge on Idol.

Not Halsey :rip:

Dua, Doja, Billie, Olivia are way too early in their careers to be “MAIN” girls.

Halsey & Selena :rip: absolutely not

She’s obviously successful, she’s just not as universally known and recognized as a person/icon yet imo. Our parents’ generation mostly has no clue about her existence.

And you think they know Olivia? :rip:

take out halsey

Yes if this was 2010….. where is Billie, Olivia etc. ?

Also Halsey is not like the other girls… she’s had no iconic solo moments.

You may single out and laugh at J.Lo, but she’s seen more success and longevity than other girls on this list.

Im kidding sis, and Britney, Cher, and Mariah are not on the same league as J.Lo

The other part of my list can be considered alternative/indie, arts not the charts. :gaygacat6:

An ATRLer said this is the list of MPGs and would like this list posted at the beginning of every MPG ONLY thread. Do we agree?

Madonna

Janet

Mariah

Britney

Christina

Jennifer

Pink

Avril

Shakira

Beyoncé

Rihanna

Taylor

Katy

Gaga

Adele

Nicki

Miley

Selena

Ariana

Dua

Doja

Halsey

edit: added Doja and Halsey

I would definitely take off Avril because she isn't really a pop star.

Miley was more of a famous teen pop star and later on it was more about her antics than the actual music.

Selena never had her big moment where she was a main pop girl at all. shes had some hits and was more of a celebrity than anything else also her performances leave a lot to be desired.

Halsey is just a no.

Also you def left out all the actual current main pop girls. the gen z ones.

you left off Whitney, Shania, and Celine?
What about before 80s?

pop didn’t start then.

Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Aretha, Donna Summer, Cher, Olivia Newton John, Patti Labelle, Barbara Streisand

Halsey is not a MPG lol

The term Main Pop Girl will never not make me lol but that list in the OP, Halsey? :rip:

I like how Doja and Dua are already MPG's but y'all held that title from Ariana till the TUN era because she didn't have a #1 hit yet (Dua and Doja themselves don't have #1 hits, Say So was a #2 peaking song outside of the forgettable remix that was tacked on last minute).

Also an all time list would be more comprehensive.

Not Doja Cat, Halsey, or Dua. They’re still too new and anything can happen next. I mean even Halsey is underperforming now

Kesha has had more success overall than them and should be included

Demi Lovato should be added if Selena and Miley are there.

Kelly Clarkson should be added if Avril is there

Celine Dion should be included, If you’re including old pop girls like Mariah and Janet

Shakira should be removed too. Her mainstream pop success is limited. She’s more similar to Alicia Keys in excelling in her genre but being a bit removed from pop radio, and even Alicia has had more pop success

This. The amount of hits Dua and Doja have now is closest to the amount of hits Ariana had by her 2013 album and I don’t think anyone was calling her an MPG then lol, so Dua and Doja shouldn’t get some pass.

But yeah, it wasn’t until like 2019 that people viewed Ariana as an MPg. They used to call her an ex act until then...even during Sweetner and that only came out a few months before TUN lol

Selena is a MPG, her longevity is amazing and she already has so many classics. some of yall cant make it more obvious that yall from US :skull:

I think one part of the “Main Pop Girl” criteria here is a sense that any of these girls definitely could or definitely have gotten a hit in the last year.

Making an all time list would be a different undertaking. I don’t want to exclude any of them, it’s just that their hit-making days are clearly over. :foxaylove3:

Taylor

Beyonce

Rihanna

Adele

Gaga

Ariana

That's it. Beyonce, Rihanna, Taylor, and Gaga have a permanent seat at the table. Ariana is the only "new" main pop girl.

The rest have much to prove.
