Lizzo deserves though. This is how (and when!) you drop a “song of the summer” contender. Everything was aligned and once the GP was exposed to the track, they latched on (you can see that in the strong iTunes sales btw which SUPER rare nowadays even for smash streaming  songs). The radio updates aren’t even that strong which shows there’s no payola.

There's definite payola...it was just spent on TikTok rather than radio or streaming farms.. 

 

We've seen more than enough case studies of how the platform works and how it can "boom" a song if the right checks are cut to the top influencers. It doesn't always work, which is why I'll also agree that there is an organic element of sorts. 

 

It's not my fave Lizzo track, but it's cute and on a technical level it's boardroom baked to be a catchy ear-worm.

 

All it needed was exposure to a big audience and a little distance from "her",  as it really feels/felt like people were kinda over "her" around the time it dropped. "Catching on" ($$$) via an external source solved the problem and made her cool again sans her trying. 

 

Also, for me, the tell-tale sign of the payola was the fact she has announced a tour shortly after. The single tanking with an album and more importantly a major tour (which a lot of entities have a lot hanging on) just wasn't an option. This desperately needed to become a hit (because the opposite was looking catastrophic), so I can't digest the idea that it just "randomly" happened.
