It was my first year that I seriously got back into reading so I am really proud! Currently I am reading Girl With A Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier Yasss I was about the same in 2021 when I got into reading again, it was such a joy

bluceleste Posted January 14, 2023 Posted January 14, 2023 (edited) Books I’ve read in the last six months or so. The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller - Why did I wait so long to read this modern day masterpiece? Hail Mary by Andy Weir - An absolutely riveting story of space survival. Even if you have zero interest in sci-fi, I think you’d love this book. White Gold: The Extraordinary Story of Thomas Pellow and North Africa's One Million European Slaves by Giles Milton - A fascinating look into a part of history I didn’t know much about before. The inclusion of witness accounts made it feel more personal and real. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens - The stellar reviews are certainly warranted. This one was hard to put down. Portrait of an Unknown Woman by David Silva - This was my first foray into the world of Gabriel Allon, the main protagonist of Silva’s spy thriller series. Even though I found the ending somewhat lackluster and the characters to be quite flat, it was still a thrilling page turner and I’ll definitely be checking out more of Silva’s books. This Much is True by Miriam Margolyes - The outspoken and witty actress’ memoir did not disappoint. The only shame was that I had heard several of her more humorous stories before. Warlock by Wilbur Smith (The third book in Smith’s ancient Egyptian series) - I recall loving this book the first time I read it years ago. Overall, I enjoyed it again, with the exception of the supernatural stuff. Circe by Madeline Miller - I didn’t care for it as much as her debut, mainly due to its lack of a main storyline. Still good, though. Heroes: Mortals and Monsters, Quests and Adventures by Stephen Fry - An entertaining way of learning more about Greek mythology. The First Man in Rome by Colleen McCullough - I had high hopes for it since it’s considered by many as one of the best fictional books about ancient Rome, and while it had moments of greatness, it was also a chore to get through. ThatsTheTea Posted January 14, 2023 Posted January 14, 2023 I just started The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell and I already know it's gonna be a heart wrencher
fridayteenage Posted January 15, 2023 Posted January 15, 2023 I've read at least 30 Discworlds. Witches are probably the best sub-series.
99sandthe2000s Posted January 18, 2023 Posted January 18, 2023 this is very cool and I feel obligated to buy
fountain Posted February 26, 2023 Posted February 26, 2023 So I finally read Piranesi last month and yup the rumours are true… it’s a serve. My fave book this year so far and probably will take a long time to surpass Now reading The Hobbit for the first time, near the end but ngl it’s been a bit of a slog… not really invested in it so much (though it’s supposed to be a children’s book so maybe my expectations were too high), still gonna read LOTR trilogy in a few months tho, never seen the movies or read it so I’m intrigued Think I might read Carrie Soto next and get in the TJR mood since Daisy Jones show is releasing soon
fountain Posted March 11, 2023 Posted March 11, 2023 Okay so Carrie Soto is Back was actually the worst book I’ve read so far this year like it was bad…. I fear TJR lost it after Daisy Jones cause Malibu Rising was giving mid too

Side characters like her were definitely a bit more charismatic than the main character. But even then, everyone and everything in the book felt surface level tbh. Just really did not pull me in like some of her others have.

SitarHero Posted March 11, 2023 Posted March 11, 2023 Hmm let me stay updated in here now that I'm reading more this year (I'm on book 11 so far and trying to read 5 every month) I've mostly been reading horror though
fountain Posted March 12, 2023 Posted March 12, 2023 49 minutes ago, fridayteenage said: all her books are surface-y tho I think for the type of books they are, Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones had a good exploration of some themes. Evelyn Hugo had the topic of homophobia and was a nice look at a complicated sapphic relationship, and Daisy Jones had the topic of addiction and the band’s complex relationships. I’d say even Malibu Rising went there a bit with the sibling dynamics going on. On the other hand Carrie Soto was kinda just an obnoxious and shallow ego trip (and honestly had a huge plot hole that the book even acknowledged at the end and made the whole thing pointless ).

iconoclasm Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 After not reading for a while, I decided to pick up the Caraval series by Stephanie Garber and I just finished the last book, Finale. I lowkey felt bad about giving it two stars because some of the reviews on GR are trashing the books, but they're kinda right I ended up giving all three books three stars, if I remember correctly. I might read Babel by R. F. Kuang next.
