I hope Canada just establishes trade with China and Mexico and lets the U.S. rot. Put 50% tariffs on all their imports.

Alas, it wouldn't really work like that on the short (or medium term). There are some things (ag products mainly) where the Canadians could just totally pull out of the US and sell other places, but the US is a net exporter of basically all of them as well (the exceptions are maple syrup and I believe a few niche apple varieties, maybe there are a few more), plus uranium and a few other mined materials and potash that the US can't easily get elsewhere, but the overwhelming majority of goods traded from Canada into the US can't really be shipped to a different market.

ย

It's either hydrocarbons in a fixed pipeline that can't go anywhere else because the infrastructure doesn't exist, or are automotive/heavy machinery parts that get shuttled back and forth between the midwest and Ontario about a dozen times during their manufacturing process in a symbiotic relationship that goes back to the 1910s. Eventually more oil and gas export pipelines to Canadian ports could be built (we're talking a decades timescale here, and it requires immense cooperation between dozens actors in the face of the current noncooperative environment), andย an automotive supply chain could be developed with Mexico (though... these are almost all American companies or the American-based subsidiaries of companies like Toyota and Honda so they'd probably not bother and just bring all the Canadian parts in the process back to the US), but it would be far less cost efficient to fly those parts and far less time efficient to sail them around, so it would probably never financially make sense.ย

ย

As for putting a 50% tariff on US goods, well... most of the Canadian crude that's exported down to the US is done so because Canada doesn't have the refining capacity to... desludgeify it, so the top value import into Canada from the US is refined fuel, and the only global oil producer I can think of with the slack capacity necessary to supply Canada would be Russia, so...ย

ย

They're going to have to play ball with Trump, whether they like to admit it or not. The truest national security threat would be withholding uranium, but I could see Trump's initial response to that to be to invade Saskatchewan to take the mines directlyย :gaycat6:

This was the one I didn't think he'd touch either. I guess best case is that he recreates it in some different form that provides a discount but is more beneficial to the Pharma companies that he can take credit for (and rest easy in the knowledge that no one really got to experience the effects of what this could've done, so how do they know if his is better or worse). More realistically, we're just back to square zero againย :clack:

How would one say "I desperately want certain people to be assassinated right now" without sounding inflammatory and radicalised?ย

'I desperately want certain people to be assassinated right now'... hope this helps

Watching Miller hand Trump all of these EO to sign off on is the worst....that guy is a literal maniac and I just know he's gonna push for Trump to get more and more extreme with these ordersย

ย I can definitely see the lightbulb of his middle class and lower class supporters turning on at some point this year. I don't think this presidency will last long. Just my gut feeling. But not in a "lets become democrats!" way. I imagine the start of a revolution and uprising of a new party and/or a universally respected republican.

I feel very very very pessimistic about the future of the Democratic Party. I know it's probably not a very historically informed take since my first election was 2016 so I don't think I have good context of a political party coming back from its lowest butโ€ฆfeeling very bad and anxious about the future.ย

Kamala was not a perfect candidate and she had her fair share of glaring faults, however for all her faults, immediately rescinding lower drug costs and pardoning rioters would not have been one of them. So I hope that all the people who didn't vote for her felt that whatever hell we're about to go through was worth that.

ย

Also I suddenly feel the need to learn how to shoot a gun.

A small group on this thread is proof that liberals aren't as immune to propaganda as they think they areโ€”the very, very small number of transwomen athletes who do exist were already participating in sports, getting much needed help in crisis centers and living their lives on a day to day basis prior to the sudden manufactured uproar.

ย

When will people realize Twitter is not reality and bots and misinformation agents routinely post inflammatory "activism" for groups on both the right and left all the time to stoke artificial division. A lot of anti-trans panic is word-for-word repackaged gay panic with only the word gay switched out for trans.
ย

Like I've repeatedly said: statistically trans people overwhelmingly voted for Kamala and begged others to vote for her despite her shortcomings and her continuously throwing the community under the bus. Celebrating the attacks on the community is not the serve you think it is. It's the same repackaged bigotry against gay couples getting married, participating in sports, using public restrooms (yes this was a real "issue" to people) and adopting kids and throwing one group under the bus is not going to save you.ย
