Historically, the Democrats have always been the giver party- be it patronage in the 19th century, economic redistribution policies in the early to mid 20th century to social welfare policies in the late 20th century and beyond. The Republicans on the other hand have always been the watchdog party- always having a rage against government intrusion, public spending, taxes, to protect private rights of citizens and entities (aka corps). It was a mistake of the Democrats in recent years to believe that their material redistributionist legacy can be completely traded in for cultural or symbolic representation, for the sake of protecting the capital interests in their side. Not only did it hollow out the party but it gave the other side tons of ammunition to pick on the Democrats sagging coalition. Now that we are in the midst of another Trump presidency, I hope the Democrats take the time to TRULY reflect on what they are as a party. It is time to take charge, not to react. And the time is now. 6 2
