hoax Posted January 16 Posted January 16 8 hours ago, Chemist said: Honestly, it doesn't make a ton of sense for them to play this card unless Trump is amassing forces on the border. Canada literally does not have the export pipeline capacity to ship the majority of their oil anywhere but the US, so instead of selling it to the global market it will just... sit in tanks until this dispute is resolved. There are no pipeline projects in the works, and the one they just completed (from Edmonton to Vancouver) brings their total non-US export capacity to approximately 25% of their total daily production. To that end, almost all of the oil "imported" by the US from Canada (the remaining ~75%) is refined on the Gulf and then immediately exported to the EU or Japan or Mexico or... back to Canada. Albertan oil is notoriously hard to refine, and some of the only places on earth capable of doing it at any scale are down in Lake Charles or Beaumont (and if Canada shuts off the taps, they can just go back to surreptitiously importing from Venezuela or they can just petition Trump to re-open the taps in Alaska. Most of the gasoline Americans put in their cars or planes or tanks comes from domestic production because it has the lowest costs. At the same time, oil is like 30% of all Canadian exports to the US (and while that's almost half of all US oil imports, it's under 10% of daily US consumption, and again, most of it isn't even staying in the US), and is their only major trade bargaining chip. They can threaten automotive sanctions, but there are hundreds of thousands of Canadians who work for US car companies in the symbiotic Michigan <-> Ontario manufacturing chain, and they'd all be out of work (and considering that Doug Ford specifically was elected by a significant majority of these people, I have to think he'd be hesitant to make that threat). Other than that, most trade is in easily transferrable services (Google in Toronto can do the same things as Google in Mountain View) or niche products that the US also makes - so we might see the price of maple syrup go up (but again, the US is the largest importer of Canadian maple syrup by several orders of magnitude, so this would be a lot more impactful on the country where these producers live). Trump is a really shitty neighbor for them to have to deal with, and I don't envy the incoming PM in the slightest, but a Canadian sanction that hurts the US more than Canada basically does not exist at a scale to be impactful. Again, if Trump is amassing troops at Fort Drum and is stockpiling AGMs at Minot and Grand Forks AFBs, then this might be the only chip they have to get him to back down, but it doesn't make sense to use it before that point. 2

I think he was a great choice, but was sadly hidden. People just wanted cheap eggs and gas and that's all they remembered from Trump so that's what they voted for. Too bad they're not getting that. 2

You're probably right, but I do love to entertain a counterfactual hypothetical Beshear's name and brand was never going to translate the same outside of KY, and he was even milder mannered than Walz, who the establishment had no issue steamrolling into place on the issues where he'd previously leaned progressive. There's no reason to expect Beshear would've been different outside of my delusional mourning, but that's where I've retreated at this point in the transition process I hope everyone enjoys their more affordable omelets and that no one planned any trips to the ANWR 2 1
