Whitmer/Buttigieg both overperformed Biden and Harris in polling, especially in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Biden was clearly the worst candidate that could've run in 2024, but Harris was clearly the second worst. Any other Dem would at least have been unleashed to say how they would be different from Biden, but Harris had too much deference to Biden as a thank you for anointing her and bypassing the open primary. I agree with the premise that an open primary would have been better even on a tight timeline, but: 1) I'm concerned that on such a tight timeline there would be no real apparatus for primary elections and it would really just be a contested convention, so no voters would actually contribute to the nomination, and 2) I must reject any document that implies anything positive about Pete's polling 1

It put her in terrible spots where she couldn't contradict anything the Biden administration was doing. Any other democrat would have been able to say "I will do things differently than Biden". You see it in the split ticket voting that was done. The dem party won basically every statewide race in North Carolina, the Senate seat in Wisconsin the Senate seat in Michigan, etc. These voters were willing to vote Dem and it would have been a better gamble to try with less national name recognition than with someone that is tied so closely to Biden. 1
