Voting to a certain extent is about self-preservation, but the built-in assumption all Arabs (Arab-Americans?) are homophobic is part of the problem. If we want to criticize religious hypocrisy as a whole, fine, but it's the double standards for me that are the issue. ย ย It's also just...untrue.ย ย The abortion referendum nor LGBTQ rights neither impacted Muslim votes for Dems. Hamtramck rejected the abortion referendum by 40 points. Whitmer still won 78% of the vote, only a 5% drop from Biden 2020.ย 2

Blade Posted October 6 Posted October 6 3 hours ago, shelven said: Nate Cohn at the NYT put out a really interesting article today about weighting choices in 2024 polling and a plausible theory for why polls might be overestimating Trump this time instead of underestimating him. ย It's long, but the TLDR is that most 2024 pollsters have been trying to fix the Trump underestimation from the last two cycles by weighting their polls based on how respondents voted in the 2020 election. But weighting by past recalled vote is historically an inaccurate technique that overestimates the party that lost the previous election (because some people who voted for the loser forget or don't want to admit that they did so, so they'll either claim they voted for the winner or that they didn't vote at all), so the polls that are using recalled voting weighting this cycle (which is most of them) might be giving too much weight to Trump's 2020 voters. ย This doesn't guarantee that 2024 polls are overestimating Trump - Cohn goes into some reasons why it may make sense to weight by recalled vote this cycle even if it's been inaccurate in past cycles - but it's an interesting theory for why they might be, and it reduces the likelihood that polls areย underestimatingย him again (since his past supporters are already likely being given more weight in polls than they should be). So many signs pointing to the polls being accurate/slightly overestimating Trump so I will be absolutely floored if there's another massive polling error in his direction. ย I'm not saying I'll be shocked if he wins because I can see him squeaking out a win *knocks on wood hopefully not* by barely getting one of the rust belt states while winning all the sun belt ones but everything is pointing to an overcorrection for him after 2 cycles of polling misses in his favor. 5 1

Communion Posted October 6 Posted October 6 (edited) I genuinely don't know why they're pushing for Walz to take foreign policy questions. This is the issue that makes Harris most unpopular. It is the issue that made Shapiro toxic to most progressives. ย He is meant to be the folksy populist foil to Harris' pro-big Tech Cali neoliberalism. ย Let alone, if the line is the VP has no power over foreign policy... why do we need to know the foreign policy views of the person running to be Harris' VP? ย It just creates cynicism. If Walz is saying that Israel can bomb nuclear facilities, it's making me question the very qualities progressives see in Walz. ย Is one Google search going to transform Walz in my eyes from the rural teacher visiting China to see the world beyond what we're told across nationalist lines into a neocon who visited China solely in support of balkanizing it? They've clearly picked their strategy - the question is whether it will succeed. What's frustrating is that, in this scenario, there is no situation where progressives will be rewarded for going along with a right-wing campaign. ย Liberals are explicitly saying if Harris loses, the idea won't be she went too far right, but that it will be the left's fault and liberals will be justified to further resent & hate them. But in what scenario will Harris winning ultimately pivot to a shift to the left after winning? If Harris loses, it's the left's fault; if she wins, she overcame the left. ย Dante Atkins works for a Dem vendor/pollster who worked closely with the Warren campaign in 2020 to try and take down Sanders. One might remember either him or his brother - also a Dem operative - going viral on twitter for making fun of and posting pictures of a young Sanders supporter at the practice Iowa caucus, mocking how he looked. ย ย ย ย 1 3 3
