Ilhan’s race being close is bad, whether she welcomed it by not running tv ads or not. If Frey had been her challenger, he’d have beaten her. And in fact, he might decide to be the one to primary her in 2024 seeing how close this got and how impactful his endorsement ended up being.

I also think that House Dems policy of endorsing incumbents indiscriminately will come to an end when Hakeem Jeffries replaces Pelosi. If Ilhan gets cut off from DCCC it will be a lot harder for her to survive. And I definitely see him endorsing her challenger and using her inevitably getting banned from committee assignments by Speaker McCarthy as the excuse.

Oh, I think it's bad but like, for her personally, in that it makes her come off as having taken the process for granted not paying attention to her own election. I feel sympathy for her in that the kind of hate she gets nationally is uniquely deranged more than any other sitting politician (the incest claims, the illegal immigrant claims) to where she has to spend time always pushing back on that... hysteria.

That then leaves her open to the effects of what of people within the grit of Minneapolis politics claim is a resentment issue. A lot of people, Jacob Frey included, likely thought they were supposed to be the ones in-line for her seat before she ever got it.

Her 2022 primary though is a bit more in-line with her 2018 performance (she won with under 50% in 2018) so it's not actually the kind of comparison versus 2020 partisans will claim. I'm terribly interested in the logic though of "Cisneros came close to Cuellar but it didn't actually mean anything!" that so many liberals previously said while now trying to thread some needle that claims Ilhan winning her third consecutive election in the House is bad news for not just her but apparently all uhhh black Muslim Somali-American progressives.

Seeing someone on Twitter go "ninth election in a row an ANTISEMITE will represent MN-05!!!!!" tells us all though probably the kind of people eager to see Ilhan fail. :toofunny3:

Karma, lol! Not her trying to go against the most popular Senator in the country :ahh: Balint truly deserved to kick her ass

Modern-day queen of rock (and Vermont) Grace Potter, however, knows the tea!

Smallest gap since November 2021. Is this because of abortion rights? or about gas prices going down?

Now we just need Pelosi’s House Jan 6th Committee to reconvene and deal the final death blows :gaycat3:

That hasnt moved much of anything. It's abortion and the mask off moment Rebulicans have had about wanting to abuse government power to live their White Christian ideals. Everyone circling around Trump now over the warrant might help the few remaining stragglers that current GOP is a cult, not a place for independents to be.

It all matters tho. Cause with the way the media handles these things, especially as it relates to Republicans, you kind of have to sandbag your opponents repeatedly in order to establish a general air of corruption about them.

If it’s just one or two things, the media will report it like it’s a both sides thing: “Omg, Republicans did xyz… but is Dems doing abc in response too much??”

They literally go from “Trump committed a crime! :mazen: ” to “Why is law enforcement looking into that crime? :biblio:“.

It‘s so stupid. So that’s why Democrats have to repeatedly yell about the crimes, to keep the media narrative focused.

I think journalist get bored with the reality of Republicans doing corruption so openly and brazenly that they look for literally any other angle, however convoluted, to keep their reporting “new and fresh”.

And unless there’s an endless stream of corruption to report on, journalist will no doubt turn this and other discoveries into “process” stories with them quoting Republicans and Democrats shouting each other down over whether the FBI acted appropriately. Just stupid ****.

We saw it happen with reconciliation both times. Reporting on the politics rather than the policies. :ace:

Anyway, this is a good week for Democrats.

Nothing the far-left says or does can change that fact (without embarrassing themselves like Bernie did this week).

And all you get on the news is "Trump FBI Raid!"

Honestly, Biden losses when winning when this happens.

According to the graph, the leaked SCOTUS opinion had barely any effect on the gap (since both Republicans and Democrats trended upward similarly) while the Dobbs decision closed the gap a little but not by as much as you would expect (with Republicans trending upward and Democrats trending upward slightly more). And even then, both those parties’ gains fell off quickly. So yes, I would wager gas prices. Tbh it seems like the state of the economy is the only thing that truly has a lasting effect on the polls. Conservatives could advocate for lining up the queers for reeducation camps and mandate Christianity courses in all public schools, but if gas remains above $3.50 in the Midwest by election time that’s all that matters. Time for Biden to take action on student debt relief. :cm:

Honestly it’s a great contrast if the media reports exactly on what’s going on.

It makes Democrats look like a competent governing coalition, while making Republicans look like a weak, corrupt, rotting body.

But they quite literally need to SAY those  exact things in plain terms, the same way they built an empty narrative around “will Biden run again 3 years (!!) from now” after BBB stalled and inflation hit.

Now they need to write about the generic ballot closing in, ask if Trump should run again with all of his legal issues, detail all the ways in which the Republican party is in disarray over the Jan 6th fact finding, etc.

Even this story about classified documents is something you KNOW they can make into a sticky months long episode because… they did it for Hillary for a lot less. Now imagine if she had stolen boxes and boxes of documents clearly marked as “classified”... :rip:  Part of it too was WikiLeaks continuous dump of emails (with nothing particularly interesting in them) which kept shifting the narrative back to emails. So props to them for the drip drip approach. It shows they understood how to manipulate news cycles. The result being no one knew exactly what Hillary was being accused of, but there was a sinister air around the emails and that was enough. The Dums need to take the same approach.

I honestly really don’t care what the facts are over the classified documents.

I just want to show up to my next group brunch and hear chattering about how “Trump stole classified government secrets and was potentially selling them to other countries and Republicans were in on it.”

Whether that’s true or not, it needs to be the dominant public sentiment. :gaycat5: If the media can make people believe Hillary was bleaching hard drives, they can certainly push this little rumor.

The right is generally more effective at driving the cultural narrative and zeitgeist. They have successfully cultivated this image of themselves as constantly unfairly victimized by the media and our institutions. Trump is seen as this underdog swamp drainer to whom the establishment has been less charitable than any other political figure. Meanwhile, Hillary is the establishment. Additionally, while this shouldn’t play as much of a role as it does, when you don’t do anything right, you can’t do anything wrong. Dems have thrown so much **** at Trump that I don’t know how much more Americans can keep up with and at this point they could start to get skeptical of whether these accusations hold any weight or simply not care. That’s why the right wing sticks to just several catchy rallying cries (“Benghazi”, “emails”) and hammers them home. So I don’t see this as similar to Hillary’s situation. If these raids turn up nothing incriminating against Trump, we will probably see unprecedented levels of increase in Republican support (more so than impeachment driving up Republican Party identification numbers).

Squad members almost losing their races, Republican losing their midterm advantage, Senator Manchin delivering the same green package as BBB without Bernie’s inflation bloat… it’s a great time to be a rank and file Dem. :jonnycat:

MemberS? What memberS? Only Ilhan had a close race and you might as well be joining that one Brazilian user who made that irredeemable comment if you're actually going to brag about people trying to take down a Muslim Somali woman by spreading conspiracies that she is married to her brother.

Imagine bragging and endorsing anti-blackness and Islamophobia.

If Ilhan is married to her brother, that’s none of my business. I don’t care one way or another about her personal life. :chick2:

It’s the fact that she’s a Justice Democrat and is aligned with probably the worst Democratic congresswoman (AOC) that I would not mind seeing her go. Whatever fractures The Squad tbh. :gaycat5:
