I understand what you're saying, but I would say that, yes, most of us engage because it's impossible not to, even in some of the most 'progressive' cities. Plenty of us were also born and raised by these people. I don't know how much more engagement you could ask for than that. Being conditioned by that environment will inevitably make you understand it. I ran far away from it thank god, but I always found their psychology to be fascinating, and now I study it for both work and leisure. Speaking of, if anyone here wants a killer book recommendation, I've been raving about "Doppelgänger" by Naomi Klein all year. It has one of the most compelling perspectives on the far right movement & mindset that I've ever read. She's progressive, but uniquely critical of liberals and very open-minded about how and why the far right has become so pervasive. She covers a ton of different topics, but she has a way of flipping your mind around to help you see from the 'other side' and it's such a worthwhile read. Highly recommend. 2
