If Biden died tomorrow, she would be president. How would she not be the nominee in this situation? It would be one thing if the primaries didn't pass already, but they did. He's the epitome of harmless white straight guy from the MidWest with a family and a dog that could bring some sense of "moderate approach" to an eventual Harris administration (and that could also convince independent voters to vote for the ticket) Plus there's no downside in choosing him as his time in Kentucky is done.

By this logic why not go with who got the second most votes in the primary as "next in line" since the POTUS line of succession is separate from who the nominee is. 1

What feels weird about Kamala being all of sudden the Dem nominee is because she was a weird pick for VP. Biden essentially picked someone that got 1% of the votes and didn't even make it to the PRIMARIES. Even Amy Klobuchar would have made more sense. Kamala is the nominee but she was never voted to be a presidential candidate. I haven't checked but I'm pretty sure it's a first. 1
