Former President Trump's comments about Vice President Harris to the National Association of Black Journalists are being treated as radioactive by many Republicans.

Why it matters: The tense interview is being met with GOP reactions ranging from qualified concern to outright shock, with some Republicans questioning Trump's ability to adapt to the new Democratic ticket.

  • "It was awful," one House Republican said of the interview, telling Axios it raised concerns about whether Trump can contain his impulses while running against the first woman, Black and Asian American vice president.
  • Sen Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) said of the Trump campaign: "Maybe they don't know how to handle the campaign, and so you default to issues that just should simply not be an issue."
  • "That was not a demonstration on how to win over undecided voters," another House Republican said.

"Let's stop talking about Gaza! No one cares about foreign policy! Let's talk about actual policies these candidates do!"

"Well, you know what? That does seem f-"

The Shapiro discourse on Twitter is so frustrating :ace:

A: Kamala please don't choose Shapiro. His comments about pro-Palestine protestors and his stance on companies selling product in illegal settlements in the West Bank coupled with his bad education views and SA cover up makes him by far the worst pick.

B: Hmm I wonder why you don't want Shapiro.

A: I explained why

B: You hate Jews

A: I voted for Bernie twice. I don't even think twice about supporting someone based on ethnic background or religion I just care about policy.

B: ANTISEMITE

It's really giving @N.M.K. on there right now.

Glad to see you've missed my point. But nice one :)

since I won't be as eloquent as this is: happy to share this on my point on Shapiro if you really are in good faith trying to engage on the subject: https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2024/07/josh-shapiro-netanyahu-jewish-vp/679300/

but again, my point is that the other candidates all have affirmed Israel's right to exist, and some have been even more affirmative of Netanyahu that Shapiro has. Yet it's only Shapiro - the one Jewish candidate - who has been dubbed "Genocide Josh"

happy to engage more after reading this and even considering what I'm saying. But you can have the slam dunk for ATRL clout if that makes you feel better.

and as for the Bernie point, it's just the reverse republican talking points. "I have Black friends!" Or how can I be racist I didn't even think about X or Y when I voted for the Jewish person who espoused the views that I wanted. Meanwhile the overwhelming majority of Jews have a shared identity with Israel and at a fundamental level believe in its right to exist. But you can pick and choose the ones that fit your narrative.

again, you can disagree with Shapiro for how he handled the college protests or any other matter. But the point is, when you look at his rhetoric and stances, his support of Israel has not been markedly different - and in many instances - on the surface weaker than those of other contenders. But it's the one Jewish man who is associated with genocide, let alone the fact that coin was termed following the extermination of his own people.

Speaking of that horrific piece by Yair:

As well, to happily dunk on the rest of your lying, Josh Shapiro does not have a monopoly on being Jewish.

Mark Kelly literally stood up and clapped for Netanyahu while Shapiro has come out against him. Has there been any Genocide Kelly calls? Give me a break. It's so funny how people who can (rightfully) hear a dog whistle on almost any issue somehow lose that ability when it comes to Jewish people. Just because Republicans support Tim Scott doesn't make it any less racist when they call Kamala a DEI candidate.

I'm sorry and not to keep it going, but I looked down Chanda's feed at the last tweet and..

The top adviser.... who sexually harassed a female staffer... and who Shapiro protected... WAS A REPUBLICAN HE HIRED?? :deadbanana4:

And he hired him cause he too is a former COP:deadbanana4:

WHY WAS THE DIRECTOR OF LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS FOR A DEMOCRATIC GOVERNOR A REPUBLICAN?? :deadbanana4:

I'm convinced he's going to get the VP spot. He's too good of an opportunity for the Democratic Party to be a major disappointment. No way they'll pass that up. The more I learn about him, the more I dislike him. :deadbanana4:

Whoever she chooses for VP SOMEONE is going to be mad, so it's whatever. IDC that much.

I really don't want Shapiro though :rip:

The DNC needs to be more imaginative in their perspective. America doesnt need a Cop-Cop tandem. There has to be a balance

Tim Walz is like the embodiment of what the Democratic Party can and should be. He even started the entire "weird" angle against Trump which is doing Kamala's campaign favors. And you cant even call him a "socialist" or a "commie" based on his record.

This is another reason why we need to vote for Harris and win this race no matter who is the vp pick. (Beshear, Shapiro, waltz, Pete , ect.) He's already signaling he's gonna retire. We can't let Trump pick his replacement
