Sheep Posted June 8, 2022 Posted June 8, 2022 Bigbang and SNSD are inarguably 2 of the most successful and impactful groups to ever come out of kpop or even just pop groups in general. The only other Korean group that even comes close is BTS and they don't have a fraction of the respect that names like G-Dragon or Taeyeon command. Would y'all fight so hard about whether Michael Jackson or Madonna had more impact? After a certain point of success and influence, debate is stupid. Bigbang and SNSD are still the biggest kpop acts ever to almost everybody in the markets that consume a lot of it. Them and their influence is so ubiquitous that you can't find a single pocket of kpop culture that hasn't been affected.

supertiffany Posted June 8, 2022 Posted June 8, 2022 Hoot is a bop, but it's a surprise release isnt it? like it was release out of nowhere it has the most atrocious hairstyles for SNSD, with Hyoyeon looking like a troll, Sunny with that awful blonde wig, and even Tiffany. but let's all agree that it was "Mistake" that saved that album, it was one of their best ballad, if not the best. by the way Hoot, has one of the most witty/iconic choreo, that arrow-shooting choreo was SMART! it became a trend for iconic or memorable chorus choreo like D4 with "gun-shooting"

The 5th was a bside. Bigbang charted in America before BTS. Bigbang sold out arenas in America before BTS. Bigbang never had a media push or a label in the US and is still one of the best selling kpop groups of all time in America. Kcon is targeted at children and young teens so newer groups always get attention. BTS has had years of relevancy in markets Bigbang couldn't fully crack and is just barely catching up to their sales worldwide in the 2020s. G-Dragon is first and foremost the best songwriter and(arguably) producer working in kpop. On top of being a great rapper, decent by idol standards vocal/dancer, and a Rihanna size global fashion icon. BTS has none of that and never will. He could have debuted in any era of pop music and smashed because of his talent and taste. Some people were just born to be superstars. GD is undeniably one of those people. All of this is without mentioning how BTS shamelessly copied GD and were a product of his influence for YEARS. Going as far as to falsely tagging videos of themselves as Bigbang on social media for exposure in the early days. GDs talent and image singlehandedly gave us BTS and 2NE1/Blackpink as copies. Not to mention he also invented the modern conventions for lightsticks, fandom names/engagement, solo projects alongside group activities, huge world tours outside of Asia, etc. Sis we only hear about copying BTS formula nowadays because it's the way to go. Music alone ain't bringing high charting and impact in the west like BTS fandom did for them. BB made little noise because only GD carry the album sales and fandom. BB fandom is weak comparing to their GP impact. Bang Sihyuk tried 1TYM and BB type of group first, but decided to cancel it and recruited BTS maknae line, the ones that bring sales and fandom. BB type of group ain't working anymore, that's why Stray Kidz and a bunch of other groups are using BTS formula, ugly rappers + self composing + "unique visuals" (Hyunjin + Felix) + strong performers +youth related topics. Of course BSH was inspired and copy a lot from 1TYM and BB, but BB fans claiming they will be bigger than BTS if they debut the same time as BTS are delusional, that type of group won't bring in crazy and dedicated fandom willing to stream every second.

Also almost every week a few idols either say something about SNSD/Taeyeon or sing their songs, yet I don't see that a lot for BB. The most I see is just some twitter accounts updating who's wearing GD's Nike shoes. SNSD in their peak, was what BTS is today for Korea, their ambassador. They were the top group on Gallup, Sisa Journal, Forbes and many publication that measured 'impact' during their peak in 2010-2011. They had the most commercial deals, successful in Japan and similarly well praised. They were advertised for Korean tourism, for Pyongchang olympic etc. During Big Bang's peak of 2015 they were never held in such regard by the country. It may be due to YG's image of thugs who makes music, but yeah at that time Korean govt rather choose Exo than BB. Nowadays barely anyone think of Big Bang, even if their music still gain interest, they're not really 'role models' anymore with their track record. Almost every Big Bang articles on Korean forums always have lots of snarky comments about them being criminal-dols.

Their impact is all over K-pop, especially in 3rd gen, while most new boygroups follow the BTS print, not the BB print BB and GD still leaves a lot impact and influence of KPop industry even if most new BGs didn't openly mentioned them. Jungkook itself mentioned he was inspired by GD and I recall most of BTS members are secretly VIPs so most new BGs wouldn't follow BTS print if it wasn't for GD and BB. GD and BB being called idol's idol for reasons.
