Damn, I wish someone leak all unreleased stuff... like Show Me Love Video, demos/songs/remixes they didn't use on albums... Tokio Dome/Bonn concerts. It would be a dream to watch/listen all of these.

The entire era was messy from the single choices down to them releasing the English counterpart an entire year later. 

Well I guess they were waiting for the label deal. Also some of the songs on the record were bought from Shapovalov's prodigies & then re-written, so probably there was some hassle with securing rights for the English versions.

This is honestly so good. Vocally, I’ve always preferred Julia’s parts in t.A.T.u. songs but Lena’s debut album surprised me a lot.

I came across a viral tweet about the worst album covers in history and remembered the roll out of t.A.T.u.’s third album. So decided to share this here

 

So in late 2007 “the Insider” on the t.A.T.u. Forum(actually members of group’s management team) spilled that both versions of the next album will be called “Waste Management”(«Управление Отбросами» in Russian).

 

Fans got annoyed with the name being “overly dark” YET AGAIN and there was some backlash, so girls allegedly decided to troll the fans and leaked the “ACTUAL ALBUM COVER” for the third album, which was supposed to be called “Together Forever…”(«Вместе Навсегда…» in Russian). The cover also hinted at “Snowfalls/Снегопады” being released as the next single.

 

 

3 months later paparazzis traced Julia’s car. She drove up to the salon to do her nails, and while she was away, the paps were making photos of the insides of her car through windows. And there it was! “THE REAL THIRD ALBUM” called “Singing Soul”(«Поющая Душа» in Russian). Obviously, that was also just trolling.

Also, another fun fact is that "Together Forever" was the name of one the early "Not Gonna Get Us" demos.
Another suggested title was "200 по встречной" or "200 km\h in the wrong lane"

Lyrics in the intro:

200 km\h in the wrong lane, together forever(in English)

Another fun fact is that originally "Happy Smiles" cover art looked a little bit differently.

The original album cover that was posted by t.A.T.u. on their website on the 3rd of September 2008 (48 days before album's release date) depicted a South Korean astronaut Yi So-yeon, the first Korean to fly in space.

The cover art had to be changed the very last minute in order to not get into legal dispute.

Here's how it looked like.





Here's a video from the CD factory in Podolsk (city near Moscow) that girls visited before the release of the album. They themselves were surprised that the cover art looks differently and had to ask their management for the explanation.

Finally, there's another twist to the whole "Waste Management\Управление Отбросами" debacle.

After facing the backlash from their Russian fans for "another dark album name", t.A.T.u. knew that fans were expecting another dark  era from them. So team's management decided to come up with another title to surprise Russian audiences. The name that they ended up with is "Happy Smiles"(or "Веселые улыбки" in Russian).

This change reinvigorated the album campaign. Thanks to leaks of info and "the all knowing Insider",  fans knew plenty of details before the album's release, and with most of the songs from the album being performed at least once during the year prior to the album's release - there was not much room for shock. So all in all that was a great decision.

However, the thing is that behind the "Happy Smiles" cover art  the owners of physical copies were greeted by another cover art with "УО" abbreviation. Which as you could have already guessed stands for "Управление Отбросами", the original name of the album. So in the end t.A.T.u. tricked their Russian fans into buying the album with the name they hated.

I've been obsessed with them (again) lately. I watched all of those old behind the scenes documentaries/outtakes that are on youtube and they are... truly something. Its crazy how mismanaged they were literally from the very beginning. The one thing that remained incredible tho is the music of course.
