I was trying to explain today’s Stan Wars to my hubby and I literally couldn’t stop laughing. It’s all SO stupid and SO irrelevant in the overall scheme of things. Today has been beyond surreal.

Right!! I come onto ATRL and see all these pointed threads, and then I get back to the real world and talk with friends and it hits me.. nobody has any idea that a bunch of randos in this tiny corner of the internet are fuming about nonsense.

This is a really bad time for us.

Outside of ATRL and stan twitter this is all irrelevant.

People are praising her on Daily Mail comments for inviting Depp.

I feel indifferent about the situation.

I am kind of annoyed about LMU being promoted so much as the comeback...like she could have just put it out with the MV and call it a day.

Let's just hope R9 Lead comes very early January.

I have this awful feeling she may get hurt by all this and cancel the Superbowl and R9.

Remember when she pulled out of the Brit awards last minute and the Grammys?

We just have to stay strong and support her at the moment.

The Depp thing was probably a misstep tbh, but I'm indifferent also. I don't think she'll pull out of anything at this point. She's handled worse, I think she can handle this.

I'm getting flashbacks to stanning her circa 2011-2013. All the controversy around her smoking weed, getting back with Chris Brown, clapping back at fans... fun times tbh.

We cant put it on her people sis, miss fenty wanted to own her business, so this is her business

It's very sus tho, especially considering Depp's surprise appearance at the vmas this year. It's honestly giving creepervibes, like when Kevin Spacey refused to go away and made eerie youtube vids...but depp is on somekind of boogie man redemption tour and he's much more adamant about being seen as in the right..

Anyway, this is bad for the brand, no matter how indifferent yall wanna be about it :coffee:

I'm currently listening to the Black Panther album and "Born Again" isn't on it, even as a hidden track.

Which to me confirms that it's an R9 track that Rih is 100% sure will make the cut and she decided to tease it early because it fits the theme of the movie. We probably won't be able to hear the song outside of the movie until next year :chick3:

Now I'm even more curious to hear it, I'll probably see the movie first day lmao

Saw the same for Taylor on IG and YouTube...don't understand why this board has a problem with artists promoting their work lol

It'll take away steam from her real comeback. When R9 drops its going smash but the potential record breaking high is less likely now imo.

The song falling 25places in most streaming  charts over a week shows it doesn't really resonate with the GP on that level which makes the push even less productive. I would've preferred if they just let it sit as a companion piece of the film instead of pushing it as some massive single. Maybe the film will connect people to it but again  they should of let that happen organically

She was never going to break records....she is generally liked by the GP but she's never had a huge fan base that rushes to buy or listen to her music on first drop.

You guys have this weird idea that the GP is only willing to extend her one chance lol People will be here to listen to new Rihanna music regardless of how LMU performs. LMU is a beautiful song...it simply doesn't have much replay value for a lot of people because it's a very slow ballad. If R9 lead is an uptempo bop then I'm sure it'll perform well on streaming.

Personally, the effort they're putting into promoting LMU makes me very happy because it means they actually care how the song performs and a good indication that they're going to put promotion behind her R9 singles/album. I would much rather she actually push her music and have a great roll-out schedule vs. her just releasing R9 with no real plan for success. We've waited too long for a half assed era.

Haven't read through the last few pages yet but I have some thoughts I gotta get off my chest about everything going on   :deadbanana:

1. Lift Me Up

Love the song, don't get people's negative attitudes when we will hopefully be getting R9 next year. I love how she's returned with a song that showcases her vocals front and centre, and has made people appreciate her return to music in a way that's linked to her vocal ability rather than just making bops. I know she has bops which showcase her vocals (OG, WHYB, etc.) but unfortunately there's still a common misconception out there that Rihanna can't sing; and I think even people in the GP who enjoy her music don't actually recognise her vocal ability or appreciate her voice enough. So returning with a song like this is v satisfying to me, as a statement of Rihanna's comeback proving that she can outsing any of the pop girls who have debuted in the past 10 years (minus Ariana), and in the fact that hundreds of millions of people across the world are gonna hear it twice in Wakanda Forever.

You can defo hear Tems' vocal delivery influencing Rihanna's (as many have pointed out), but I know that Tems has been influenced by Rihanna's voice herself. Although Rih's leaning into Tems' approach, she's previously sang with that kind of nasality and vocal run style anyways. The nasality similar to Tems in LMU makes me think of her own voice in the second verse of Needed Me in particular, but also Rihanna's always been nasal. And she's always done vocal runs in ways that Tems also does vocal runs in her own music. So in that sense this vocal delivery isn't just a complete copy of Tems like a lot of people are saying.

In terms of charts, I hope it debuts at #1 in the US (esp after all the effort). I was hoping for a #1 debut in the UK (defo not happening), but even without a #1 debut here hopefully it can rise to the top once the film is released - I hope the same applies worldwide and also in the US if it ends up losing the top spot.

2. Johnny Depp Scandal

What the actual f*** like I wanna believe it's just an insanely controversial marketing tool but I also think it's a PR nightmare? I hate that she's supporting an abuser, who I know still has a lot of supporters, but given her past I never thought Rih would endorse someone like that. It's disappointing and really confusing because this is the kinda thing she usually takes a stand against, e.g. boycotting the Superbowl and refusing the Half-Time Show in support of Colin Kaepernick.

But it's that sentiment that scares me too because maybe that means she actually stands behind Johnny Depp? The only other times I've felt like this towards Rih in this value-based way is (a) when she got back together with CB in 2012 (although I understand this was different because of emotional ties to an abuser etc.), and (b) a couple years ago when she posted about Israel/Palestine on insta and it was completely tone deaf, though it confused me that she posted that after tweeting #FreePalestine in 2013 or something.

But yeah, overall I don't understand why she had to book one of the most polarising celebs from the past couple years. She could've just booked someone equally as famous without incurring any damage to her personal brand and the SXF brand. But there's no such thing as bad publicity I guess... :eli:

Soz it turned out to be an essay but I'm on that James Joint wave     :celestial3:

LMU openning to 8m says otherwise...

You're going by her old standards, she's a different level of artist in 2022 versus 2016

she must be doing all this because it's close. the most accurate predictor on twitter (lippredicts) seems to think it's close.

it's really something else all these tactics lol

Same here.

I don't think I can add too much in here anymore.

Hope her all the best and hope for a great Superbowl Show.

And so on.

Hopefully I can make peace with this situation. But I'm truly affected.

She has been a significant part of my life for half of my life so far... And it's not easy feeling this way.

I just needed a few hours away (and I may not come on for the majority of tomorrow). Thank you for the messages

even if she doesn’t get the #1, if radio continues to grow and with the release of the movie, I can see Disney/her team promoting it even more

I am worried she is gonna pull an Anti tour during SB with lackluster stage production and a lazy performance and completely embarrass herself and kill her hype even further :monkey:

Honestly me too.... it's okay on her own tours because she'll always have the support of us but that laidback idgaf vibe on stage won't work for the superbowl. :giraffe: She has to put her all into it

Some of yall are so embarrassing and weird.

Rihanna has worked insanely hard in recent years and done so much humanitarian work and for both inclusion & diversity in her own work, and with other organisations. The moment atrl starts bandwagon hating on Rihanna ya'll just forget everything she has done and jump ship?  The LMU campaign is obviously very messy, it'll pass. It's not even for r9. The album is OBVIOUSLY coming at some point next year, I can't believe you guys think she is doing the SB for ''money'' or to drop 1 song for a soundtrack and bounce. Logic has really gone out the window with some of you :doc:
