Interscope heard all of Joanne (which originally did not include PI) and asked her to go back in the studio to record a lead single

She then made Perfect Illusion and gave it to Interscope. Who knows if she was trying to make a point or if she thought it was actually lead single material

Jimmy Iovine chose Applause as the lead because it was the last song he heard I believe too.

It always baffles me that some users really think we are here actually losing our minds over a single release when in reality we're just having fun and killing time.

Applause ended up being her biggest radio hit and one of her longest staying Top 10 residency's on the Hot 100, i'd say it was rightfully picked

It was definitely not her biggest radio hit adjusted for inflation.

I just remembered she ignored Artpop at the CBT

Applause was a great choice. It's my second favorite lead single after Bad Romance and the video is just delicious.

Do What U Want was the only better choice for a lead single on ARTPOP, just soundwise, but considering everything that went down, I'm glad it wasn't.

Perfect Illusion just didn't sound like a hit in any way, shape, or form. Stupid Love well, I'll say the video was the more baffling decision, I think the song is okay but it didn't wow anyone.

I watched that video essay on ARTPOP, and I liked it a lot; after getting through the more over-the-top social justice-y parts, she provides a very interesting analysis of the album's theme. The album has been getting a lot of recognition these past couple of years. I can see it getting a revival on streaming, ala, BTW, sooner rather than later.

Spoiler

Gags releasing would help of course :ducky:

Diamond Heart would’ve actually been cute for the lead. The hook is great and it screams the “authentic chick ;)” vibe that she wanted so bad dd :rip:

THIS :clap3:

Alice too, cute lead single before ROM

and the fact that they were okay with PI but thot John Wayne DIC or MR are not single materials speaks volumes countess.jpeg.8ed84ec5177ccde42e2c65bc41

Yeah actually in hindsight I think Applause was a good lead single. Iirc she wanted Sexxx Dreams (and/or Burqa when that was a thing, right?) but I never saw that doing anything major for her. Applause (and Aura for that matter) could have been bigger with some lyrical tweaking but that was a recurring issue with ARTPOP. To the general listener lyrics about Jeff Koons and banging gongs seems nonsensical. My friend still argues with me that the post-chorus lyrics to that song are "baby it's the end of you and me" instead of "A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E". :skull: Idk lyrically I think it's just a bit all over the shop. It also would have never been a good idea to sign off on a song called Burqa so I'm glad they changed that, but that songs intro lets it down too.

And on top of all that the fact they humoured an R Kelly collaboration on a song with DWUW's lyrical substance wasn't great from her or her team. I'm glad she was able to get away from that in the end, but it's a shame cause with a different collaborator I feel like DWUW could have also been way bigger than what it was. Overall an era of missed opportunities.

nnnnnnn I'm glad I'm not the only person who has already watched this full feature video essay. She was really doing too much on Gagita for born this way, and I say that as someone who's half 'Oriental' :snowman:

Canola was never being considered on 3/1 or 3/15 so they’re still viable options for LG7 lead WE ARE SO BACK

With an autobiographical MV showing her life in LES before fame, hustling at bars & clubs? Exactly and I told her I said ma’am
