The reason is easy and a hard pill to swallow: indifference.

 

Stupid Love and Perfect Illusion were very mixed but at least created conversations and had all the attention, from fanbase to casuals. Disease came right after a condensed pack of hype+disappointment from Joker and "LG6.5" so the GP found no reason to tune in. This is how fickle the general public has been and real talk here, the lead had to be an undeniable, Bad Romance-level smash to wipe out everything and put LG7 to the forefront- which was an already challenging thing to do- and Disease is not that. Had Joker been a hit, DWAS, Harlequin and the soundtrack were still going to be there (and maybe perform better) so Interscope's idea to ride on the film's success by adding the lead to all of this was overcooked. Irrational confidence from Interscope led to indifference from the GP. Let them breathe and come back to you. The lead should've come in January for a Feb release of the album.

 

Regardless, Disease sounds and fits as a lead single, just not in the context of her career right now. Her US fanbase would still be here to support Disease better if her album cycles were closer to each other. But her other ventures and business moves these years have very openly alienated her fanbase, so if she had to be convinced (again) to come back to pop, she had to pull ALL the stops.

 

Sorry for the rant. I've been downvoted to hell already for being a 2025 truther defending similar reasons before even Joker was released, I just feel like her team missed the mark again.

You make a lot of good points but they don't fit in the context of you being a pre Joker 2025 truther.

 

Can you please explain why you anticipated Joker 2 to be a panned bomb? Why would the second be any different - a law of nature? The first one was loved by audiences despite it also getting mixed reviews. 
 

I'm sorry but only people in the BTS would have known the movie was gonna be bad, and everyone trying to claim it was obvious are just monday morning quarter backing or got lucky with predicting it was gonna tank.

 

If the movie was good, it still would have been a great idea to carry out the timeline we live in. 

 

I hate to say it but I blame Todd. He put her team in such a bad position by late September that I can't even imagine them getting out unscathed - a delay after her announcement on the paper would have been worse than the Chromatica covid 7 week delay. 

 

I hope it's obvious a delay to January after her previously announcing it would have been one of her most self-inflicted damaging career moves to the tiny dedicated fanbase she has left - only adding to more indifference than she already has

Glastonbury is such a massive spot, she'd barely even need to do promo here outside of that. We need it
