Mariah Carey has used her advantage, Doctor Miami, to change her artist to... Spoiler Everyone, Iggy Azealea has entered the building! Secondly, the judges and I have heard your concerns regarding a certain aspect of the game. We've had this planned for a few weeks now, and since we are officially in the second half of the game, we thought it would be best to announce this now. From here on out, the category with the least entries is automatically SAFE. Note that this does NOT conflict with the rule that categories with solo entries are automatically safe, which means that if one category has no entries or a solo entry, that category will be automatically safe, and the least entries safety will rollover to the next eligible category. Now, let's get into these entries. Music Video Rihanna & Lana Del Rey Lyrically, both songs deal with themes of lust, but from different aspects. In the context of the Yin and Yang theme, “Needed Me” represents the deadly side of lust/dark side of the symbol as in the video Rihanna can be seen murdering a lover who she describes in the song as “needing” or lusting for her and expecting their relationship to be more than just a fling. On the contrary, “Lust for Life” represents the lively side of lust/light side of the symbol as Lana and Abel perfectly capture the essence of what it feels like to be deeply in love and the will it gives them to live. *** Cardi B and Taylor Swift In this Yin & Yang pairing, Cardi B and Taylor Swift respond to criticism they have received from the media/haters. Taylor Swift’s music video for “Mean” is all about taking the high road. Taylor, and the other protagonists in the video, get back at their haters by exceeding all of the expectations their critics had of them. This is in stark contrast to the music video for “Press”, in which Cardi takes a hands-on approach to deal with her critics. Matching with the lyrics to her song, Cardi quite literally “kill 'em all, put them hoes to rest" by murdering her detractors. Both of these videos balance each other out, just like a Yin & Yang, because they portray two distinct ways to respond to criticism. *** Bebe Rexha and Iggy Azealea These 2 videos both share a common theme: insanity. They also both take place in the same setting: a mental institution. Despite these similarities in theme and setting, these videos are nearly opposites, which is why we decided to use them to represent the theme of this round. The video for “I’m A Mess” is devoid of color throughout most of its duration, and even at the end it’s still very dark. Its take on insanity is sad, harsh, and grim. Bebe is visibly saddened, her fellow patients are clearly out of their mind, and the overall tone is very somber. “Lola”, on the other hand, takes insanity and makes it colorful, vibrant, glamorous, and fun. The videos are polar opposites in this way. One could even distinguish them as the harsh reality vs the fantasy of those stuck in a facility. Even in the scenes where Iggy and Alice are acting out in reality, it’s portrayed in a fun and zany manner, a significant difference to the much more serious insanity portrayed by patients in the “I’m A Mess” video. In summary, these 2 videos take the same concept, but tackle it in 2 completely different ways, which is why they are a good representation of ying & yang. *** Beyonce and Katy Perry Haunted - Yin California Gurls - Yang Bey and Katy both have excellent videographies therefore, we decided to submit for this category. In both of these videos, the idea of the fantastical is explored, whimsical elements are incorporated to create imaginative and absurd imagery. Even though the videos share different ideas, the inclusion of the fantasy elements in both videos provide the connection as both could be seen as different portals in a fantasy movie, this can be seen through the costuming, the inclusion of imaginative & magical elements and the overall design & visual effects. Haunted is the Yin because it depicts terrifying, cold, negative and dark imagery whereas California Gurls is the Yang because it showcases happy, fun, positive and bright imagery. Haunted provides the viewer with societal fears and it could be seen as a more serious video while on the contrary California Gurls is more on the relaxing, humorous and carefree side. They both represent the different sides of Yin and Yang with their own unique stories however they relate by their fantasy elements and shared visual genre. Photoshoot Azealia Banks and Grace Jones “In all stillness there must be movement; in all movement there must be stillness” Representing YIN - stillness - by Azealia Banks We know from yinyang theory that we need to balance yin with yang to achieve harmony. Representing YANG - movement - by Grace Jones Fashion Zendaya & Madonna Notes on Yin and Yang: From bright ball gowns to dark jewels and lace. Madonna and Zendaya embody the theme of Yin and Yang as opposing forces of good and evil in their contrasting Met Gala ensembles. Madonna shows her darker side in this risque Givenchy outfit while Zendaya plays into her Disney roots in this Cinderella inspired ball Gown by Tommy Hilfiger. Madonna and Zendaya represent the classic fairy tale ball scene in which a princess and villain both attend the ball until the clock strikes midnight. *** Ariana Grande & Kylie Minogue Ariana Kylie We submitted these two looks for fashion because they complement each other in a major way and a more subtle way. The obvious difference is Ariana's look is black and Kylie's look is white. Moreover, Ariana's outfit covers nearly her entire body, while Kylie's outfit covers very little of her body. Still, both artists serve sex in these iconic and unique looks. With that, we already have a winner! Congrats Azealia Banks and Grace Jones, due to being solo entrants, you have automatically won your category and and won yourselves safety, and an advantage in the game!
