Sufjan Stevens is good!

The only people that dislike the new Sufjan are the bandwagon stans :lmao:

I honestly liked Sufjan's genre change. However, I agree that it will be hard to surpass the quality of his previous LPs.

Didn't hear the Biffy album, but I did like Instant History and I think Tiny Indoor Fireworks as well (have to re-listen, can't remember it atm)

Not interested in listening to Evermore but i'll take your word for it. The sufjan album I don't even hate, it's just there? Still my least favorite of his albums. Arca's album my favorite from the set. KLK and Mequetrefe are among her best songs.

hi we're new rym acquaintances!

grime's record... I don't listen to it as often as I did earlier in the year, and the mastering is too wet for my taste at times, but some of the songs are nice.

Kiki arca's most realized album fs. KLK is my fav from it.

We back! I'll be sure to get back to checking out yalls Best Ofs as well :-* Oh and FYI what I would have written about Arca (which I still stand by my opinion of putting Rip the Slit lyrics as the write-up), is that I've lowkey always hated her production (Utopia, LP1) and I think I tried out a few songs from her albums but I was like ew gross yucky, so I was very pleasantly surprised to enjoy Arca a lot. OH and I played Rip the Slit/some hyperpop for my roommate on Friday and she was SHAKING. Anyway, time for more indies!

Zebra Katz: LESS IS MOOR Album Review | Pitchfork

"Sweet moans in a falsetto..."

35.) Zebra Katz - Less Is Moor (Experimental Hip Hop/UK Bass)

I do think this is a little higher than I would normally place it. I used to only really listen to the Shygirl collaboration and the FULL album finally hit last month, so I wanted to give it an extra highlight. Basically, if you like the new Shygirl EP/that sound then you'll love this (she features on the best song on here too!). It's sexy, filthy, flirty, fun, and full of bops. Lick It N Split specifically is FIIIILTHY. The moaning and groaning from Zebz that moves into the cackle is one of my favorite music moments of this year.

Listen to: Lick It N Split (feat. Shygirl), In In In, Ish, Zad Drumz, Blush

Omar Apollo : Apolonio Album Review | Pitchfork

"It's alright, we're way too young to be givin' out advice..."

34.) Omar Apollo - Apolonio (Alternative R&B/Bedroom Pop)

Omar was a fantastic discovery last year. He captivated me with his song Ashamed and his EP/baby album that followed was also basically all good, with my only criticism being the ballads were kinda boring. Apolonio basically took that criticism to heart and traded all the ballads from that album for sex jams. There are less "bops" but I think it ends up making the project more well-rounded, and I enjoy the continued flirting with his sexual orientation ("...and a pretty boy still hit me up on strange occasions"). My favorite track, Useless, is basically a Steve Lacey track that he wished he recorded. And... the sex jams are also my top song picks nnn. The albums cover is great too.

Listen to: Useless, Kamikaze, Want U Around (feat. Ruel), Stayback, Bi Fren

Brandy Clark: Your Life Is a Record Album Review | Pitchfork

"All I know is I loved you... so f*ck the rest..."

33.) Brandy Clark - Your Life Is a Record (Country Pop/Americana)

Grammy-nominated lesbian queen of country! I kinda forget how into alt-country/Americana I am until the end of the year nnn. I don't have much to write up here because I just think this is one of the more fun and easy-listening country record I checked out this year.

Listen to: Who Broke Whose Heart, Who You Thought I Was, I'll Be the Sad Song, Love is a Fire, Long Walk

Tame Impala: The Slow Rush Album Review | Pitchfork

"I was happy just listening..."

32.) Tame Impala - The Slow Rush (Psychedelic Pop/Indietronica)

Ah, like Sufjan, another album that people seemed to be very up-in-arms whiney about when it was released. And again... I understand this isn't as good as previous albums but it's clearly an underrated release. Is It True is my favorite and the most underrated track on the album; it's probably the funkiest track on here and has a really cool outro that doesn't just throw the production away like some outros tend to do. The rest of my top picks are a bit predictable, but also amazing. Lost in Yesterday deserves to be their "big stadium concert" song, One More Year is a great opener and probably the most theme-representative track on the album, and my other two picks are basically retreads of previous Tame Impala tracks but also still good.

Listen to: Is It True, One More Year, Lost in Yesterday, Instant Destiny, Tomorrow's Dust

Zeros (Declan McKenna album) - Wikipedia

"Darling, why do you bury yourself in sheets?..."

31.) Declan McKenna - Zeroes (Glam Rock/Pop Rock)

So every year there's always one specific new male pop-leaning lad who GRABS my attention. 2016 was Roosevelt, 2017 was Gabriel Garzon-Montano, 2018 was Louis Cole, 2019 was Omar Apollo... and 2020 was Declan McKenna. I suppose for that reason I should rank him higher, but since his album only came out in September I think I had less time to really fall in love with it the same way I do with my other "top new male acts" of previous years, and maybe also because this is a concept album. But still, this album is awesome. Anyone trying to have fun with their music and emulate GOAT David Bowie wins in my eyes. And he's a pansexual legend! Daniel... is my favorite because it's the best tie in to the concept and it's the most fun. And Emily is really underrated!

Listen to: Daniel, You're Still a Child, Emily, Beautiful Faces, Rapture, The Key to Life on Earth

the zebra katz album is good, i like that the weakest songs are in the middle, because you get a good beginning and end which is more important dont let anybody else tell you different.  glad its hitting you!

YES :jonny:  arca!  sufjan!  buscabulla! kate nv!  ok thats a 1234 punmch, sorry dont know biffy.

ithink thats why i liked kate's album too.  im really not into lyrics that much and barely pay attention.  i remember actually disliking her previous album too? maybe i just wasn't in the mood bc i only listened once, but this one was fantastic.

c&l was boring.  maybe im not really into sadboi/sadgirl stuff, but yeah...

perfect arca choices.  the way she proved me wrong this year.

YAAAAAS that last update was for the art HOES. I think you'd like Biffy's album! Maybe. I actually hadn't even heard of Kate before, but this album captivated me so much so I guess I should see what her previous stuff was like.

I enjoy Arca productions on Bjork songs, but his own music is a bit too much for me tbh :rip:

The way I basically feel the opposite way nnn I felt she RUINED Utopia, or maybe the blame for that should be on Bjork.

Oh and btw I'm 90% sure Arca identifies as she/her now!

That thing is boring af. I'm convinced if I made some lifeless music with an outdoors aesthetics critics would give me AOTY too.

And yes, Evermore is better than Folklore. In every metric.

LMFAO DHDSLKHDs I mean................. probably same!

Oh, well in that case... :deadbanana2: Yep and you'll be seeing some more of them for sure :gaycat2:

Got into Phoebe a little late (like 2-3 weeks ago.) Once again, solid picks for your favorites. "I think Punisher is a definite improvement and more consistent" I feel the exact same way! And yeah, it is a tad overpraised as well :keir:

Glad to see us having mutual thoughts on Phoebe. Lowkey after that update I played Funeral, Demi Moore, and Smoke... for a while nnn

OT: The Ascension didn't to much to me, but I literally listened once however I really liked My Rajneesh, same it's not on the album

:deadbanana: I didn't even bother with My Rajneesh because it wasn't gonna be on the album, oops

"instead of the Tumblr soft indie boy Carrie & Lowell music" oops not coming for him like that dd. But yeah even though it's not as good as previous album but i'm still bopping. I'm living for Sufjan living his popstar fantasy this era

I've never heard Biffy Clyro's music but seeing this album went #1 (as far as i remember?), maybe i should try it

Us having like the exact same thoughts on many albums this year nnn. Agree with Sufjan! Would love for him to piss off everyone and have a sellout Electra Heart album for fun. Oh that's right Biffy did his #1 in the UK I think!

I could have probs gotten into Punisher with enough effort but I only gave it two spins so :-*

Happy to see Arca here but obviously I placed her a lot higher :keir: Rip The Slit is like my least favorite tho jksdhfds

The Ascension was hit or miss for me but you have the best songs Death Star and Tell Me You Love Me listed so :clap3:

I get that Rip the Slit is underrated. That kinda gives it a bit of extra appeal from me nnn.

On 12/11/2020 at 9:01 PM, Pink Matter said:

Folklore was.... okay dd. Taylor really doesn't do it for me (then again, singer-songwriter types aren't my thing). I really had to force myself to sit through folklore more than once, though I remember liking The 1 a lot so at least she has that going for her :clap3:

As far the rest of your list so far, I haven't heard much :skull: The ones I did listen to, I didn't sit with them all that much (Sufjan for instance) while others I had saved and just never got to them (Phoebe, Arca). Didn't know Everything is Everything dropped a new album! Might give that a listen. Any song you recommend?

Everything on my "listen to" section for Everything Everything was my favorite from the record, in that order.gif. So I'd def give Violent Sun and Big Climb a spin and if you like them, give the whole album a listen!

This is how I've started to feel too + it's not their fault. ... but yeah, a lot of this year's year-end lists did not reflect my own state of mind for that same reason.

But anyway, Ewan better stan for Arca (and he picked a lot of the best songs). Sufjan's album just hasn't called me back just yet, but I'm sure it's fine. Agree Room for the Moon has interesting things going on.

I had no choice but to stan Arca this year :clap3:

I mean it's even a bit early for me to say if I prefer Folklore or Everclear but we'll see. Strong agree re: Arca and YAAAAS Video Game is NOT just a "basic" bop and even if it is it's a Sufjan "basic bop" why do people insist that they have to be above fun songs just to have indie cred???

Ooh you know... that's a good way to describe Miss Anthropocene. Mastering is too wet, yes that's 100% why it's not higher on my list and why a song like Delete Forever is my top pick, it's a lot more crisp.
