Spoiler

Pair 1

Rihanna: The lyrics and the production both fit your theme description very well! You get a very clear, instant impression that this is a toxic relationship that she wants to be out of.

Ariana Grande: The lyrics fit your theme well, although I don’t get as much of a “toxic” vibe from this compared to the Rihanna song. She almost sounds a bit happy, or at least content, to me. It’s still a pretty good choice though.

Theme: I really like this theme and I LOVE the write-up. Your theme was clear, you justified how both songs fit into it, and you went above and beyond by also tying in how these songs fit in each artist’s personal lives. Really great job with this!

Pair 2

Miguel: The song definitely fits the description you gave it representing undeniable and committed love, both in the lyrics and the sultry production. That being said, “it’s a love song” is kind of a basic label to go with.

Fantasia: Once again, the song very clearly ties into your theme and the description you gave it. The lyrics and the sound feel like a very natural jumping point from the Miguel song, and I like that the idea in this song is more nuanced than in the Miguel song.

Theme: I really like how you used your two songs to tell a story and serve as contrasts as opposed to both of them expressing the same message. Your write-up is well done, although I would have liked a bit more of an explicit reference to your overall theme/story instead of just describing each song separately one after the other.

Pair 3

Fifth Harmony: Flop.

Miley Cyrus: Flop.

Theme: Flop.

Pair 4

Lana Del Rey: Wow, you really get a very instant feeling of toxic, dark love from the production of this song. I don’t really have anything else to elaborate on, I think this is a great example of the theme you went with.

Nicki Minaj: Even though they’re very different songs, you also get a feeling of toxic love from this song as well, particularly from the lyrics. The song starts a little bit slow and disconnected from the central theme at the beginning, but it really grounds itself towards the middle.

Theme: You structured your explanation of your theme well - I like that you clearly link both songs together at the beginning, show off each song as an example, and then bring the similarities back at the end. Comparing this to the other toxic relationship theme so far (Pair 1), this one’s a little bit more basic, but overall it’s very strong as well.

Pair 5

Marina: Yup, the song fits your theme perfectly and the description for it. You definitely get a very optimistic, high-on-life vibe from this. I also really like how some moments of the song’s lyrics kind of foreshadow the second half of your theme (with the “warnings” she gets from others).

Demi: Like Marina, this is a strong and clear representation of the second half of your theme. While there’s the odd moment in this song that feels like it applies a bit too specifically to a drinking/drug problem as opposed to a larger fame/Hollywood problem, the overall message of the song definitely fits your theme well, and the second verse in particular is really well connected.

Theme: Whew, you guys went off! I love the creativity of this theme, the way you lead us through it in your detailed explanation, and the clear story that it tells. Easily my favourite theme/explanation so far!

Pair 6

Lorde: The lyrics match your theme very well and you can clearly place this song in a pre-fame perspective. I guess my one critique is that you emphasize that this song represents innocence and optimism, but the production and melody sound to me like they’re coming from someone who’s already matured and seasoned. I know that’s mostly a consequence of Lorde’s overall sound, but it does detract from the theme slightly.

Celine Dion: The lyrics and message of this song match the second part of your theme perfectly and are extremely on-the-nose (I guess a very tiny critique is the lyrics sometimes feel a bit too on-the-nose?) The production and her vocal delivery also match the theme very well - you can definitely hear her frustration and despair in the song.

Theme: Your theme is similar to Pair 5’s in the sense that it straddles the line well between being straightforward and easy to follow without being too obvious or basic. What I really like about your explanation is the way you continuously bring back references from Lorde’s song into your explanation of Celine’s song to directly show the evolution of the story. Another very small critique, but I will say there is such a thing as an explanation being too long - I think you could have made this a bit more concise and kept the quality. But good job overall!

Pair 7

Janelle Monae: You very clearly get both the sex/seduction aspect of your theme and the food allusion aspect of your theme in the lyrics. The production also has a very seductive and lustful feel to it. Good choice!

Katy Perry: nnn ok so this definitely meets the theme in the sense that there’s tons of food allusions and it’s definitely a very sexually-charged song. My problem is I’ve always found the lyrics of this song really cringey to the point that it takes away from the seduction/passion aspect of your theme for me. Like I can’t really take this song seriously in the context of a serious theme.

Theme: I really like the originality of this theme! You could have easily just made your theme “seduction/passion” but the food aspect adds a really inventive element to your theme and it connects your two songs much more clearly and specifically than they otherwise would have been. Really like this one!

Pair 8

Kacey Musgraves: Whew, this really is the perfect representation of a joyous, fairytale-like early love. Everything about this song is so cute and sweet, from the lyrics to the relaxing production.

Alicia Keys: Hm, kind of conflicted on this choice. It definitely signals the end of a relationship that was once happy, which is generally what your theme was going for. You reference sadness, anger and pain pretty prominently in your theme, but I don’t really get much of that from this song. There’s elements of sadness in here, but it mostly just feels like a song about missing someone and longing for them.

Theme: I really like the way you went about telling your story and building your theme - the more general explanation of your story followed by using your songs as examples for them works well. The theme itself is a little basic and I wish there were something in here that made it more unique/creative, but overall it does connect your songs well and tell a nice story.

Pair 9

Hyuna: The song ties into your theme in the sense that she’s in a difficult relationship that she wants to get out of. My issue is that, a few lyrical moments aside, I don’t really get the sense from the lyrics or the production that she feels trapped or suffocated - it feels more like she’s just tired and defeated, which still works generally for your theme but doesn’t seem to be the exact thing you were going for.

Ellie Goulding: This one more directly and clearly fits your theme - you definitely get the sense that this is a song about escape and feeling free after a toxic relationship. I wish the song had more lyrical content so that it could flesh out your theme even more, but overall this is a pretty good choice.

Theme: I like that you tell an actual story here and really make your two songs feel like they’re two parts of one consistent story. I think you could have maybe gone into a bit more detail fleshing out the story, but overall I like the story and the way you tie everything back at the end.

Pair 10

Kelly Clarkson: The song embodies your explanation for it very well. The lyrics and her vocal delivery really create this image of somebody who is fed up with her partner and is finally realizing the ways that he was bad for her. It very solidly feels like a “I’m done” song which seems to be exactly what you were going for!

LOONA: So on the surface the song’s lyrics are clearly about self-discovery and finding the real you, which is what you were going for. However, you portray the song as being specifically a post-breakup discovery which I don’t really get either from the production (it’s too happy) or the lyrics.

Theme: I really like this theme/story! I was expecting to be another “leaving a toxic relationship” theme similar to many other entries this round, but I really like the originality of starting with the break-up and then making the story about what happens afterwards. Great job, one of my favourite themes!
