Pedro Posted February 24, 2017 Author Posted February 24, 2017 ATRL's original game "Choose The Album, Then a Song" is back for its anticipated ninth season on its original concept. "Here I am, once again"... Ok, my inner Kelly Clarkson was coming to live along with some nostalgia of that iconic song but the truth is I really am here and once again to present you the entries for this exciting third round where I am sure you felt a little bit lost on what to send and what not to send. It's not one of those rounds you have JUST the song. I am sure it'll be quite a round but before I present those soon to be GRAMMY-worth nominees, let's review the rules! 1. There's not such thing as bad losers; We are all here to have fun and share our favorite music with everyone. 2. Every contestant must cast a vote each round; The main purpose of the game is to introduce everyone to new music. If this rule isn't applied, only the judges will benefit from it. 3. Every entry must contain a written part; To fully understand your decision, you will be required to send in an essay along with the song chosen. 4. A song can only be used twice and can only be use three rounds after; This will allow you to explore your album further. 5. Deadlines must be respected by contestants and judges; There will be three updates weekly: the round presentation, the entries and the results. 6. There's no space for stan wars or called voters; The main purpose of this game is to introduce everyone to knew music. Therefore, we don't want any fights or any type of voting manipulation. 7. The vote process is build up of two parts; Every round the judges votes will be mixed with the public votes. 8. Be fair and do not be biased. If you want others to respect your work and game, make sure you respect others too by not allowing your personal taste affect your votes. Spoiler I seriously hope you still are in that GRAMMYs mood because you will need that inspiration. It has been a week since the most important (and unreliable… Oops!) music ceremony was held and let’s be honest... You must be one of the two: a fan of Adele who still is over the moon with her wins or a Rihanna fan who still is bitter about the results. That’s ok, though! We won’t need your opinion on that. Instead, you will need to bring in that masterpiece from your album and present it to us as a potential Record Of The Year winner. You are your own judge on justifying why is that song worth a GRAMMY award for Record Of The Year, so be fierce, surprise us and take chances. Unlike last round, remember to be general and not specific because a Record Of The Year is not only based on a personal opinion. If you'd like check out what Wikipedia has to say about Record Of The Year. Explain your choice in no more than 200 words. 1. shelven: Sia - "This Is Acting": 'The Greatest (feat. Kendrick Lamar)' Spoiler ROUND THREE: “THE GREATEST" While the Song Of The Year category purely rewards songwriting, the Record Of The Year GRAMMY encompasses a much wider range of elements in the recording process. The award primarily highlights a record’s production, engineering and overall creation, and The Greatest is a shining highlight on This Is Acting in this regard. From a technical standpoint, The Greatest is a masterfully created recording; the bright instrumental in the song’s opening and verses is unique and perky enough to capture the listener’s attention, but not overbearing as to overshadow the melody. The song’s chorus, one of the punchiest in Sia’s discography, manages to be simultaneously explosive and subdued thanks to its careful sound mixing, creating a sense of excitement that still allows Sia’s powerful vocals to shine through. The vocals themselves are another example of The Greatest’s meticulous creation – Sia’s voice is extremely polished throughout the track, and multiple layers of harmonies are blended into one smooth result. With these details combined, the recording of The Greatest provides the song with an instrumental and vocals that are as uplifting and dynamic as the lyrics seek to convey, undeniably making it deserving of an award that recognizes this exact type of excellence. 2. MusicLoverDude: Samantha Jade - "Nine": 'Castle' Spoiler Past Record of the Year winners had a lot of power and passion behind them, which could be felt in the instrumental, lyrics, and vocals. On Nine, Castle fits all these qualities. Backed by an urgently toned piano, Samantha's struggles with the music industry can be felt throughout the song, as she sings about how people told her she was "damaged" and "rubble in their eyes", indicating people thought that she would never have success. Years of hearing this criticism made her into a strong woman, as she belts in the chorus that she turned that criticism into something good and constructive, like a castle. As a result, an empowering song like this is deserving of Record of the Year. This is a song that people can relate to in their own way, with their own personal struggles, and as a result will resonate with a lot of people and be remembered, like the other Record of the Year winners in recent years. As Samantha said herself "It’s about turning hate and any kind of criticism that you get into being constructive and being positive", and a song with this message deserves Record of the Year. 3. Rihlana: Halsey - "Badlands": 'Gasoline' Spoiler Gasoline is a prime example of technically spectacular production enhancing a song’s narrative. The simple twang of the oriental string instrument throughout the verses gives Halsey free reign to build up the anticipation with her heavy lyricism. A bass line is added to heighten the brooding feeling the record is attempting to create. Coyly, the pre-chorus features very light computer-generated sounds, readying the listener for the flurry of electronica that is the chorus. The rawness of Halsey’s angst in the chorus is expertly showcased by the explosive production absent in the verses. By gradually layering, Lido was able to create an atmosphere of apprehension, bordering anxiety. Even the chorus becomes grander, with manipulated vocals (“ahh” sounds) added towards the end. Perhaps the biggest stroke of genius was the presence of the sound from “Hurricane” after Halsey uses the word within “Gasoline”, a tremendously creative and exciting inclusion weaving a humble thread throughout the entire BADLANDS experience. Through exceptional understanding of emotional progression, Lido was able to bring together differing and novel sounds (such as the koto) to create a dark, yet energising instrumental to match the powerful story of the track and for those reasons should be nominated for ROTY. INSTRUMENTAL LINK 4. theycallmemaraj: Ariana Grande - "Dangerous Woman": 'Touch It' Spoiler Touch It is the most worthy song from the Dangerous Woman album to win Record of the Year. The main reason for this is the technical proficiency, despite Ariana hitting an extremely impressive E6 whistle note, the production from Max Martin is remarkable. Martin has spawned many “pop perfection” #1’s which makes his production on Touch It much more diverse. The futuristic synth filled instrumental accompanies Ariana’s vocals perfectly as the song starts at a lower tone and by the end reaches extraordinary highs. I think Touch It resembles what the Grammy committee would be looking for which is overall excellence without having success on the charts. This is due to the fact that Touch It did not follow the current trend in music and sounds fresh compared to other songs you would hear on the radio; it’s more intense and meaningful. The last minute of the song is mesmerising as Ariana harmonizes with the already powerful chorus and continues to add layers upon layers of harmonies. The song gets more climactic as the production builds up along with her voice and it leaves you wanting more and more. 5. sumthintoxic82: Kelly Clarkson - "Piece By Piece": 'Nostalgic' Spoiler For me, the "Record of the Year" is a combination of production, relatability, and replay factor. It's that song you could not escape from. It made an impact in some form or another. No other song fits that role more than "Nostalgic" Relationships can be complicated. And if a relationship ends, things can get even more complicated. That's what "Nostalgic" is about. A relationship that has ended and reminiscing about the good and bad times. Wondering if they are still act the same way you remember. Knowing that you can't go back and change things. Wondering about all the "what if's". Life happens and afterwards, you must accept what has happened and move on. Anyone who's had a bad breakup can relate to this message. Production wise, the song is almost timeless, with this 80's inspired electro rock sound that sounds very current, while having this retro sound. It also helps that "Nostalgic" is an uptempo song because, while the message could get a bit sad, the beat really makes you want to move. You'll wanna dance and sing along to it, adding to the replay value. 6. ReachOut: Hilary Duff - "Breathe In. Breathe Out.": 'Tattoo' Spoiler My pick for ROTY is Tattoo, originally written for the folky-pop album that was scrapped, the song shows a new side of Hilary a mature yet vulnerable side of a grown woman. Tattoo was the most hyped before the release of the album thanks to the collaboration with Ed Sheeran, that also was nominated for ROTY with Thinking Out Loud. Tattoo is a typical Ed Sheeran’s ballad and it’s a classy and quality song. The vocals are Hilary’s best in a while, the best from Breathe In. Breathe Out. too and Ed’s background vocals on the chorus are a plus. The lyrics are mature, you can feel the sadness that invade you when you lose someone that you believed was the one and thanks to Hilary sweet voice and use of her tone the song come out as an authentic post-break-up song. A lot of people across the world can relate to it. Record Of The Year in fact should be a song that it’s well execute, with nice lyrics but also it should be universal, the more people can relate to it the more it deserves to be ROTY. 7. Vulnicura: Robyn - "Body Talk": 'Dancing On My Own' Spoiler Record of the Year is a monumental title that rewards song that possess the rare mix of technical achievement, artistic excellence, critical success and more importantly, some indistinguishable factor that allows the record to transcend musical constraints, such as genre and market viability, and be crowned Record of the Year. Dancing On My Own is not only Robyn's crown jewel in the Body Talk series, but her entire discography that would be highly deserving of being awarded Record of the Year. Whilst DOMO possesses all of the above qualities in clear abundance, the trait I admire most in the record is how delicately Robyn dances between heartbreak and perseverance - by the end of the track, DOMO transforms from a song of emotional vulnerability to one of emotional strength in a way that I have never been able to identify elsewhere. On an artistic level, DOMO is the pinnacle of Robyn at her best; the parallels with With Every Heartbeat are apparent, but DOMO displays immaculate refinement of her own space in the pop world that still continues to influence new artists to this day. Through her artistic achievements and excellence, DOMO is undoubtedly deserving of Record of the Year. 8. Queen Conchita: Conchita Wurst - "Conchita": 'Put That Fire Out' Spoiler Record Of The Year is arguably the most important category at the annual Grammy Awards, Put That Fire Out by Conchita Wurst should not be brushed under the carpet and seen as a non contender for the win as a first time nominee. The song, a classic inspired, show tune powerhouse ballad, comes to life with the orchestral instrumental featuring statement instruments such as the violin, drums, piano and cello. A strong part of this song is the message lyrically, it portrays all that Conchita stands for and to not be afraid of following your heart. Throughout the song, the steady slow somber drumming, sounds like a leading of a march. A march to get the point across, convincingly stated in "Hear this voice, telling you there's no choice, we're gonna spread our love, whether you like it – whether you don't", a lyric that is so important for the world. The production of the song is dramatic and suspenseful and the backing vocals add an extra layer of dimension to the song. The song is overall polished and produced to the finest quality therefore extremely worthy of the prestigious Record Of The Year award. 9. Lion: Troye Sivan - "Blue Neighbourhood": 'Heaven (feat. Betty Who)' Spoiler Hello, it's me For this round we were asked to present a song we think is worthy of roty and I've chosen Heaven. This is one of the most grammy worthy song on the album. It talks about accepting ourselves and asks a really important question... If we can't be ourselves is heaven worth it? Troye is an inspiration to many lgbt teenagers and it's nice that it reflects in his music. Heaven really tells a clear story about someone who's conflicted between "morality" and living his truth. He doesn't want to disappoint the people dear to him but at the same time he can't live a lie. In conclusion, it could help the closed minded people understant the struggle of the lgbt community and It's really important in a time where the lgbt community don't know what's next for them because of obvious reasons. "Without losing a piece of me How do I get to heaven? Without changing a part of me How do I get to heaven? All my time is wasted Feeling like my heart's mistaken, oh So if I'm losing a piece of me Maybe I don't want heaven?" 10. Tymps.: Lemon Demon - "Spirit Phone": 'Spiral Of Ants' Spoiler For this round, I chose Lemon Demon's song Spiral of Ants. The final track on the standard edition, it's a perfect swan song, slowing down the pace from the rest of the album. It deserves to win Record of the Year for its stellar production. Each synthesizer in the song is fine-tuned to perfection, and the production on the vocals evokes 80s "Safety Dance"-era nostalgia. The song travels from soft lows (the intro) to dizzying highs (the final chorus). The song takes a more-is-more approach, applying swaths of effects to the different sounds. The song itself sounds surreal, like it came out of a dream, and feels fresh and new. 11. Speezy: The Weeknd - "Starboy": 'I Feel It Coming (feat. Daft Punk)' Spoiler The Weeknd comes whole hearted on his song I Feel It Coming. He brings along Daft Punk on the soft electro-R&B/Pop tune. The reason why I Feel It Coming deserves Record of The Year is that the song has a production that makes it stand out while paying homeage to the 80's. This track contains gentle vocals by Abel and a Daft Punk solo production for the last 30 seconds of this song. The chorus contains a smooth repetitive chorus of "I Feel It Coming" which is similar to RTY winner "Happy" chorus 12. lhdang2000: Adele - "25": 'Million Years Ago' Spoiler "Deepening with regret, Adele pours out her heart and soul onto ‘Million Years Ago,' which tells how fame affects not only her but also everyone around her. The acoustic tune penned by Greg Kurstin, and Adele with a beautiful combination of Adele’s vocal and the production. It builds up with softness when Adele sings about her past when she never had to think about her actions, instead, choosing to do what she thought would be interesting. But as soon as the build-up, the days of youth contrasts with the difficulty when the woman grows up and becomes a successful artist. It comes to the chorus when her vocal sounds burst into tears singing that she can’t even look at herself in the mirror. She misses the air, she misses her friends, she misses her mom, she used to have that. Now, there’s only herself, and her fame. The busy life of a star has affected on her. ‘Million Years Ago’ and Adele has given all of us moments of emotions, of sincerity, and of regret; and now, it’s turn for the Recording Academy to give them one thing they deserve in exchange, a Grammys for Record of the Year." DEADLINE February, 26th Good Luck!
