Based on certifications only (including stuff released before 1989 but certified in later years):

American Life 200,000
GHV2 200,000
Music 200,000
Ray of Light 400,000
Evita 100,000
Something to Remember 200,000
Bedtime Stories 200,000
Erotica 400,000
The Immaculate Collection 800,000
I'm Breathless 200,000
Like a Prayer 400,000
True Blue 100,000 (~700k on Oricon)
Like a Virgin 100,000 (~800k on Oricon)

= 3.5 million based on certifications alone.

Not sure why this source cites RIAJ certifications as their means of calculating this considering they have numbers like 1,060,000 and 1,630,000 when all of the RIAJ certs are like 100,000; 250,000; 500,000; 750,000; 1,000,000 so there would be no way to get a number like 30,000 when adding those together.

This list is ridiculous! Madonna is in the Top5 even without all her huge 80s albums. She'd be in the Top2 if you count all of them.

Who made this list and why there is no link or source provided? Fake news.

You can tell how fake the list is by the fact that it says "Micahel" Jackson. Lol

Japan-Imports

In 1998 49 million albums were imported and sold in Japan. Those albums sales are not tracked by Oricon. In the 1990s, in some years, imported copies made up 1/3 of overall albums sales.

Why did the Japanese import music CDs? Because their currency was so expensive that it was cheaper to import muisc that to buy it domestically.

these imports were most likely albums that werent produced in japan, Mariah had all her albums produced and promoted in Japan. Besides, how do we know how many of these imports are albums by her?
