Vxspertine Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 Sorry I'm late lemme catch up 7 and Golden Hour in your disappointments, finally someone serving the tea on those albums For me it's not that those albums weren't my thing, 7 was just pretty boring and lifeless compared to their previous efforts and Golden Hour only had about 3 good songs One Kiss is a harmless bop Finesse is a huge bop that deserved more success Always Trying To Work It Out kind of aged for me but it's still decent, Low has a lot of better songs though
Vilppu Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 the fact that you're doing full paragraphs for songs in the 90s... that's a little bit too powerful don't you think i think the grouper song is my favourite from this set, it's really pretty
TheWayWeWere Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 Down appearing their recent performance on Fallon slays
Love Drought Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 Several points were made. I agree with what you said about H.E.R and Laurel. Driving is such a great song, maybe it's because I'm a sucker for ballads but you're right about how the pauses make it so intimate
World Eater Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 I hate that grocery store line on Always Trying to Work It Out Still an amazing track tho, probably my second favorite on the album. That Rhye track was cute, wish the whole album wasn't as bland as it was
Tom Vercetti Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 Anything from grouper this year is a blur to me. South Of The River was one of the first songs I heard from Misch. Solid. hopefully that's not the only majid appearance.

Wicked Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 H.E.R. is lame, you are correct. I don't even remember what Thru Your Phone sounds like
Kiss It Better Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 Lost Souls is like the only HER track that i don't like and never played again wtf but I agree though she's like copying The Weeknd with the mysterious thing and releasing a Trilogy compilation (except she got an AOTY nom ) Wine Pon You is a chill bop and btw Moo didn't take off because she ended herself with the f word tweets before she even started to actually blow up she's a mess nnnn

Pink Matter Posted December 24, 2018 Author Posted December 24, 2018 Songs of 2018 90-71 90) Nicki Minaj|Barbie Dreams Considering the good sis Nick has been taking L's all year (many justified, some unjustified), I had to throw a win here, even if she's only two spots above Cardi on my list. Barbie Deams, one of the four serviceable songs on Queen, shows Nicki in her element as a punchline rapper. Rapping over the late rapper Biggie's Just Playing (Dreams) instrumental, Nicki "takes shots" at a number of prominent figures in rap from Drake, to DJ Khaled, to 50 Cent to Young Thug and so on and so forth. And at the end, she treats us to a nice flow/beat switch, as a sort of cherry on top to an already solid song. 89) MGMT|Tslamp I love a good wonk, and it gets no better than on the halfway mark on MGMT's Little Dark Age, Tslamp. Tslamp acts as a scathing critique of our current phone/electronic obsessed culture where we... well spend too much time looking at our phones, in all of it's 80's synth-y goodness. 88) Arin Ray|We Ain't Homies (feat. YG) There's nothing truly groundbreaking about an artist like Arin Ray or the music he currently makes, but that's not necessarily a bad thing as he's taking the elements of contemporary R&B at his disposal and making a great final product. Like I've commented before, this is one of those songs where there's sort of a gradual buildup where there's a new piece of the puzzle being added until you get the full picture. The drums kick in, Arin begins to sing, the guitar is strummed, the piano keys are played, bells chime, and there's even a YG verse to top it off. This all comes together for one fire collab. 87) Kurt Vile|Bassackwards I was pretty excited for the album but unfortunately, I walked away not caring for it much. This song in particular left a big impression on me, though. One of the longer songs in my countdown, it's surprisingly one of the easiest to listen to. A pretty chill folk tune, there are certain sections of the song where I fade in and out of concentration. By that, I mean there are parts where Kurt sweeps me into his sort of confessional songwriting and I listen to his own thoughts while during the instrumental sections, I get left to my own devices. I really like the sort of reversing sound effects in the background too. 86) Dream Wife|Let's Make Out Here we have the intro to Dream Wife's s/t, Let's Make Out, where they hit you hard and hit you fast right from the jump. Lyrically, it's not about anything meaningful or deep, though it doesn't need to. Let's Make Out is a high energy grrrl power rock tune about wanting to make out. What's not to like about it? 85) Maxwell|Shame To be honest, I expected another 7 year wait before we got any new music from him. I'll take it though. I love the general percussive sound of the song; it helps to give more power and emphasis to what he's singing about. 84) MorMor|Heaven's Only Wishful The intro to MorMor's ep of the same name, he tells a few stories about the general somberness and pain that occurs in life. MorMor's singing in the verses is very succinct and with many sharp pauses which adds to the state of melancholy in the song; synths add to the sorrow feeling that's felt throughout the song. 83) Julia Holter|I Shall Love 2 I don't have much to say here. Not because I'm at a loss for words, but because everything I like about the song is laid out plainly and can be heard easily. A magical and fairy-like sounding song, I Shall Love 2 is about the fact that, well, she shall love. And given the way the song leads into a cult-like chant of sorts (maybe as a sign of reassurance), it seems there's nothing you or I can do about it! 82) Seinabo Sey|I Love You Up next is the the "romantic" intro to Seinabo's I'm A Dream. Upon further inspection of the song, it's clear there are some questionable and conflicting lyrics but it takes an good vocalist that can emote well to make you not give a ****. While this level of devotion (especially w/out reciprocation) seems toxic, who am i to judge? 81) Half Waif|Leveler Sometimes, less is more, especially when it comes to songs where the artist is trying to evoke many emotions out of their listeners. With sparse production, backed only by piano, the lead vocalist Nandi's voice cracks as she sings about losing someone that she loves. Throughout the song you feel the tension rise and fall, a sort of feeling like you can't breathe and the relief of exhalation at other parts. And with the vocal layering effect she uses at some parts of the song, it all adds to make something very special. 80) Childish Gambino|Summertime Magic Coming off of "Awaken My Love!", this can seem pretty generic, but hey, there ain't nothing wrong with that though. Who doesn't love a straightforward catchy feel good summer anthem about love? This should've been a smasha!!! Love the use of the steel pan in the production too. 79) Son Lux|The Fool You Need This one's all over the place. It sort of has this beehive buzzing effect at the beginning that thins out as the song runs along, flecks of drum playing, a siren that starts to blare even louder during the second verse, a mix of synths and strings, and god only knows what else. And all of this comes together to make a song about love? And I like it? 78) Jon Hopkins|Emerald Rush Don't really have much to say about this one either. Emerald Rush has one of the best buildups in an electronic song that I've heard this year which leads into one of the biggest bops I've listened to all year. Can't ask for anything more 77) Olden Yolk|Verdant This one's hard to explain. It's pretty similar in style and production to a number of songs in my countdown and it doesn't particularly do any specific element that much better than the rest, but it just seems to work out so well in this case. The sort of looning in the background that gives the song ambience, Shane and Caity's voice pairing well with each other adding a layered vocal effect throughout, the lightness of the drumming and the piano playing; it all comes together well. 76) Drake|Nice For What Drake is a flop and I'm generally over him but he manages to drop at least one good single per era. For Scorpion, that's Nice For What. It's by far his most interesting single since HOWGH. The NOLA bounce inspiration and the lifted Ex Factor sample do most of the heavy lifting but it wouldn't be a Drake song if he didn't come up with a good hook and catchy lines to get stuck in your head too. 75) Toro y Moi|Freelance ahh my ****ing fave Ngl, this is a far cry from his #1 placement on my songs list last year but if there's one thing I can count on Toro is to go for a different approach with his music. Moving away from the ambient, electronic R&B heavy Boo Boo, he dives back into the dance-y territory of his Les Sins material with this Daft Punk inspired tune. Not to mention, Freelance includes some of his best written lines too! 74) The Carters|LOVEHAPPY i know we're supposed to believe everything about Everything is Love is utter garbage but I'm not here for that agenda ATRL was trying to push. On the closer for their joint album, The Carters take many of the elements that have been used throughout the album to craft one of their best collabs. The call and response style they implemented was shown best here, it had just the right amount of rapping and singing Bey, this being more of a celebratory track about "fixing" their marriage, the horns and the rest of the live instrumentation. It combined it all to create a perfect way to close out the album. Jay was aight too. 73) JungleP*ssy|Trader Joe At first I was planning to go with what seemed like a more obvious song choice (Get Down) at the time but I decided with this instead. It has all of the same wild and outlandish lyrics JP is known for but deviates greatly from the type of production she's rapped over thus far. It's poppier (but not in a generic way), synthier with "HUH!'s" thrown in to give it this more ethereal sound, and added elements (a ch-ching here, a phone/bell chime there, bed squeaks for added measure), to craft one of her most interesting songs to date. 72) Ama Lou|Wire Payola. Payola. And MORE payola! On the closing track to Ms. Lou's DDD EP, she sings and coos about love that she's embarrassed to show the world. One of the things I love about Ama is the way she sings, hanging onto and emphasizing certain words to give them more feeling is even more emphasized by the electric guitar and organs that ride along with her. I liked what she had to say about the beginning of the song sounding like your typical love song but then she hits you with a surprise bitch moment, cuz it initially got me when I first played it too! Ugh her mind, it amazes me. 71) Justin Timberlake|Wave And now we'll end this set with a high tempo bop from the President of Pop himself. I know we're supposed to have left JT back in January of 2018 but Man of the Woods wasn't completely bad like we were all made to think. Waves shows JT blending the cOuNtRy aesthetic well with his old style with a fast paced banjo playing overlying production by the Neptunes to make one enjoyable track.
