Streaming will only keep growing from here.

It's currently the most accessible way to consume music. No downloads, no CD holder... just a mobile device and 4G+ or Internet equivalent connection.

Glad my faves are all successful streaming artists, since that is the way to listen to them from this day forward :clap3:

Taylor Swift and Adele will definitely have to release their next albums on streaming first week.

I strongly believe Adele's label will do it. Her Spotify numbers on her off time are impressive and she already broke sales records that probably won't be broken again. Taylor is the big question mark.

Do artists profit from streaming as much as they do from album sales?

Yes, if you're relevant in it similar to sales.

Billboard estimated Drake made $18 million from just his US streams during 2016 with his Views era. :clap3:

By contrast, no artist even made $10 million from their US sales in 2016 (or 2017) according to Billboard.

Even Taylor's 2.2m US album sales in 2017 only generated $5 million according to Billboard for her.

The music industry's number are **** compared to other forms of entertainment. And that's when the industry has a GOOD year. It's weird when you consider how common music is for people's lives and how FAMOUS the biggest superstars are.

2017: $8.7bil for music in the US vs $43.4bil for film I'm SCREAMING :deadbanana2:

But that's excluding touring, which is the biggest cause of revenue in music.

Also $43.3B for the movie industry is WW, not US only.

https://www.statista.com/topics/964/film/

Edit: Eh still tragically low.

If half the music revenue comes from the US around $17.4B is a good estimate WW. + $5.65B from touring = $23.05B

You're right, still tragically behind. Also, just checked IFPI for the global revenue report, it's $17.3B.

When your music is used in advertising/movies/tv shows and stuff.

Basically revenue earned for your music outside of sales/streams.

Yeah. I think they’ll both be fine on streaming. Both fan bases will probably still be fine to come out for physicals, especially if Columbia/Big Machine make them attractive. Bundles and such will play a part in that for sure.

But Drake owns his label right ? Maybe that's why 'he' gained so much from his music.

On top of what @Timber said, film industry is more expensive + the shelf lives are concentrated in those first few weekends, with lots of pre and post marketing/promotion. Music just doesn’t have that reach, moreso the money for that type of promo anymore. Then you have BluRays/4K/streaming and other home market revenues for film (I’m assuming that 43.4b doesn’t include all that already).

Music being common does make it seem a little off, but yeah you don’t have touring/merchandise, etc counted here. There’s also radio and other a lot of forms of free listening options.

total streaming revenues: $3.4461 billion

total synch revenues: $131 million

total physical revenues: $461.6 million (down 24.9%)

did ATRL, one of the last anti-streaming holdouts on the web, lose?

No? Lol. Only certain fanbases (mostly artists who debuted before 2008) still defend pure sales, most of us know what the real deal is.
